Ephotozine Pentax HD Pentax-D FA 70-210mm f/4 ED SDM WR Review

Ever since I’ve had my copy of this lens, I’ve been looking carefully for CA, and I did find some. One click in Camera Raw, and it was gone. So, it’s there, but so far not an issue for me.

I didn’t buy it expecting it to be better than the D FA*70-200, or even my FA*80-200. For the purpose (lighter weight for travel and track-walking) it’s so far exceeding my expectations.

Anecdotally, the AF is quick and seemingly accurate (Cameraville’s test backed that up). I haven’t yet had time to compare sharpness against the FA*80-200, let alone my friend David’s D FA*70-200, and our collective present circumstances may prevent that for a while.

I’ll put up some images in the relevant thread when I’ve done with my present tinkering.

What replaces the mechanism for the moving component and its mount would determine that. The simplest way to deal with it would be to remove the drive controller and fix the mechanism at the central position. The ideal way would be to manufacture a new mount. I have no idea which Ricoh opted for, but if I were the design lead, I'd be proposing the latter. On the other hand, the former may even be the cheaper option, given that Tamron would be making far more of its own branded lens, than Ricoh would be making Pentax-branded versions.

Nice to see someone else who appreciates the K2DMD, in your case enough to memorialise it this way.

The best Pentax film camera I’ve ever owned. Thanks for the memory. :)

Our understandings aren’t a million miles apart. In particular, it’s the way people use “virtue-signalling” to denigrate others with whom they disagree that really irks me. I thought I made it clear that I wan’t referring to your use of it.

Virtue-signalling is a contrived term, meant to belittle any declarative action by someone you dislike or disagree with. (Not to be taken personally)

Narcissistic behaviour, on the other hand, is a personality disorder, manifest as the conscious and unconscious behaviour of someone who has little to no empathy with others. (Again, not to be taken personally)

I'm sure those NHS staff will get to see the applause at some point. Nonetheless, if people had previously put their money where their hands are directed to now, there'd have been less need for it.

Did no-one else notice that he had more keepers on the AF test with the Pentax, compared with the Nikon setup?

I’ve so far noticed no significant problems with softness at the long end or CA, but I’ve only had mine out a couple of times since it arrived, and it clearly depends on the subjects you shoot.

Wristwatch mechanisms fit into that “tiny little fragile thin and subtle” description, too: in particular, ladies’ mechanical wristwatches. I’m wearing my father’s Omega Seamaster watch from the 1960s, which used to keep excellent time until the band broke a couple of years ago and it hit the (tiled) floor. The impact broke nothing but the balance staff, which is now unobtainable. Fortunately, my regular watchmaker (one of the last still practising in our city of 190,000) was sufficiently skilled and equipped to fashion a replacement, but it now needs occasional re-regulation. It used to keep excellent time, but now it keeps time well-enough, though not reliably so.

We sometimes console ourselves with the thought that anything mechanical can be repaired if it wears out or breaks, and it can, but always at a price that rises steeply as replacement parts have to be re-manufactured. As with my wristwatch, I’m sure any fine mechanical component in a camera body or lens can be re-made accurately with the original specification and precision workshop equipment, but I’m not sure everyone would be willing to pay the price, or even put up with the variability in performance that would come with a lesser repair.

On the other hand, small electric motors and their drive electronics can be made highly durable, particularly if their duty is light, as is the case with aperture control drives. The original Pentax SDM AF motor is a counter-example, but one with a much heavier duty and which could be repaired with a suitable replacement. We hope they learned the lesson from that, nonetheless.

Again, debating uses as a “creative tool”, definitions are important, or perhaps the field of creativity. The present fashion for having ultra-high definition, sharp to the corners photos in the commercial world, along with the smooth transition areas etc has probably influenced the design decisions for this new lens. Certainly, the bulk of this one is in line with that of the D FA*50, which possesses those qualities.

My 43 is feeling a little neglected, but I’m sure it knows my attention will return to normal at some time.:)

What a radical notion. Fancy having to put your money where your mouth is.

Seriously, I’m trying my hardest in the lens department, but it will take a big leap for this next APS-C Pentax to induce me to add another body to my inventory – I’ve run out of children to hand the old ones to.

Well, yes, a little more time would be good from several points of view. My bank balance has to recover a bit after purchasing a D FA70-210, for a start. Mind you, maintaining a suitable distance from others is a bit easier if you’re a semi-retired introvert, out in Nature taking photos.

Vecnos - A new Ricoh spin-off brand for 360 cameras

It looks more like the Doctor’s (original) sonic screwdriver.

Surely, to give truly spherical images, it should have a fourth lens on the bottom.

Ricoh has been developing its range of imaging products in other areas, as well, principally automotive applications from what I’ve previously read. It seems odd that this 360 degree imaging project should be the one to be spun off, with other investment from outside Ricoh. It tells me that Ricoh doesn’t consider it to be a core business activity, which seems paradoxical. After all, much of the initial development work has been done with the Theta products.

Who is our Obelix, though? :D

It’s still around (Maps and Statistics | Plague | CDC). Of course, it’s not the Middle Ages, either.

The similarity is the speed with which vulnerable people are struck down. Taking this seriously requires people to be alert to the signs and take reasonable precautions.

Like many other aspects of life, there’s no guarantee, but risk management is sensible, as with those other things.

Still, the prospect of visiting Venice without the crowds is a tempting thought... :)

Apparently, stock markets are.

And airlines.

And tourist operators.

And immigration officials.

I remember when the Vietnam draft was in force, and people (mostly people who were too old to be caught in it) would say “You’re more likely to die in a traffic accident”, which seemed comforting at the time. And then I realised that very few drivers were looking to intentionally kill me.

This is rather a different kettle of fish, although I have no doubt that, in the land of the conspiracy theory, someone will be cooking up a plot about a deliberate release of a biological warfare agent. ;)

Why haven't Pentax made more Plm lens ?

The Pentax SDM also uses a stepping motor, but it’s a piezo-electric one, not electro-magnetic, which many people in the past ignored in the flame wars about SDM failure. I don’t know if you were aware of that, but the SDM motor is pretty small, too, as I found out when I dismantled my DA*16-50 upteen times to free up the drive. I’m not aware of the nature of the Fuji drive.

On other matters, I don’t know that ring drive motors actually increase lens body diameter any more than small shaft-drive ones like the Pentax SDM or DC motors, although the weight is probably greater. Consider that the whole of the body is increased to fit a shaft-drive motor, and not just the sector where the motor is mounted.
