Thats a nice shot.

It must be almost 60 years since I was last in Glencoe, weather seems about the same from memory, I had one cassette of 35mm Perutz slide film for the 2 week holiday plus about 3 cassettes of Adox Black & White KB 15 I think, yes 15 ASA ISO now I suppose, film was expensive and a gofa's wages low.

I hadn't noticed the time, too late to find a B & B so spent the night sleeping in the back of a 5cwt Ford van, it was cold.

I don't see anything wrong with this shot, I'd have been absolutely delighted if I'd managed anything near as good, for a cropped image theirs a fair bit of detail in the plumage, I'd have probably got an accurately focused image of the surrounding branches.

Most evenings I walk down this bohereen to the sea, I was about to photo this pink wildflower so I could look it up when I got back home, just as I pressed the shutter release this little fella nosedived into it. q10 01 prime, 1/200sec @ F5.6 ISO 200

I was kind of hoping that a like button could be automatically attached to each image so it would act like a critique of their work.

Its not always possible for everybody to view a particular club every day so adding a comment below can be a couple of pages away from an image.

Members often submit several images in the same post, as it stands you have to either ignore the post completely or give a like to everything when you might only wish it to attach to a specific image.

Is there any way around this ?

The FA Conundrum

What has always puzzled me is the difference between FA series Primes and Zooms.

Nearly every prime is well regarded and some are thought of as having the best optics Pentax have ever produced with a few well know models still in production.

There is an equally wide range of zooms but with a few exceptions most have very low optical ratings.

I am well aware that designing a zoom is nowhere as straightforward as designing a prime but went wrong ?

Weather Resistant

I think Alex645 has summed up the filter situation very well and as I mentioned at the beginning there is no point in buying a €500 lens and putting a €1 filter in front of it. Its not really surprising that B+W filters seem to be the favourite as they are made by Schneider-Kreuznach, which as far as I recall, have a long association with Schott Glass and it was Otto Schott and Ernst Abbe that carried out a lot of early experimental work leading to the wide range of glasses we now have.

Incidentally apart from making the odd camera lens or two Schneider-Kreuznach have a vast range of optical and precision engineering products.

I think Dartmoor Dave, usually found on the Takumar club, summed up weather resistance quite well, some time ago while referring to a photo taken on Dartmoor in the south of England

This was taken inside a rain cloud at the top of Great Staple Tor yesterday. So wet that the 18-55mmWR had rain spots on it again a second after I'd wiped it clear. The camera and lens have been in the dry cabinet overnight and seem fine. . . but the photographer appears to have caught a cold.

You just can't win.

Weather Resistant

Well now I didn't expect so much interest as this has generated, so many thanks for all your opinions and information.

I am the only Pentax user in our club, don't get excited its only around 20 members, mostly Canon users and one or two Nikon, I suspect the weight of Canon advertising has blotted out other makes, I write an occasional newsletter and this was one of the subjects that came up.

Having watched the video and read the reference articles I can see where its difficult to actually nail down "Weather Resistance" and I can understand why IP standards might not cover all the problems occurring in quantifying the degree of resistance required in photography.

Trying to cover all the possibilities in which photographic equipment might be used and designing a standard to cover ever eventuality would be a nightmare leaving it in the hands of the legal boys to the themselves up in knots trying to define all the exclusions.

One thing that didn't get as much attention as I had hoped was the subject of lens protection filters, yes lens hoods do protect against the odd collision but I have never been able to make up my mind as to whether or not filters add protection or cause deterioration of the image.

Kind regards to all.

That lens seems to work just beautifully on the K-1, the old adage of put your money into good glass seems to ring true.

Weather Resistant

One of the advantages of the Pentax Line of DSLR's is that most bodies are “Weather Resistant” and have been for quite some time, whether this is necessary for every day use is open to debate and is derided by those who state “who’s going to go out and take photos in the rain” but where the weather can change rapidly in an hour or two there are bound to be occasions when you suddenly find yourself out and about in a downpour with sensitive electronic equipment and probably nowhere to put it or you are on a beach with wind blow sand with all those little particles just waiting for an entry place, so on balance it probably is a good thing.

Weather resistant lenses are another matter as they are usually heavier and therefore bigger and probably more expensive than a non WR model. The most obvious WR part is the mount with its seal which can be damaged or perish, which you might not notice, or can harbour grit which can degrade the WR, zooms seem to carry the WR label more so than primes and with more moving parts they may need it more but nobody actually mentions that the business end of the lens is wide open to the elements at all times. Manufacturers do apply protection coatings but exactly how long they are good for you are never sure. Yes those of us who do think about it do put on a protection filter but these have their own problems. If we say that the average lens costs around €500 and we rush out and put a €1 special offer filter in front of it are you going to cause more problems than you solve, are you going to get reflections, ghosting, distortion etc. so what filter do you choose ?

Then there is the matter of temperature resistance, if say your camera works between -10˚C and +30˚C will it stop working at -11˚C when you join an Artic expedition or will the insides fry at +31˚C on your sunny Safari holiday, of course it will obviously be the battery’s fault as its made by somebody else, but who knows ?

But, and it is quite a big BUT, exactly what does “Weather Resistant” mean and are all manufacturers working to the same rules, yes they all have beautiful photos of their prize WR model with their latest WR lens attached carefully sprinkled with water designed to make you feel safe when you buy it but are those little droplets still going to be on the outside after an hour or two in heavy rain ?

I'm in the dog house at the moment for failing to listen, I have absolutely no idea what I was supposed to be listening to and I can't ask my daughter because she thinks I know what it was and if I admit I don't know by asking I'll be in double trouble.

I have been given to understand I've been happily married for 51 years.

No Poitin, tut, tut, tut. - where's your sense of enterprise

"We ain't paid no whiskey tax since 1792" - Bob Dylan "Copper Kettle", I remembered that line from the Joan Baez version.

Actually there are some advantages from the current lock down, I wandered my way down to the sea, about 1.5 miles, usually you can hear traffic from the main road to Dingle a mile or more on the other side of the canal, not a sound, not even farm machinery or the odd chainsaw, you could hear the birds were singing.

Sigh ! wishful thinking, fine weather at last and there's a bohereen not too far away which should be full of such beautiful wild flowers, not that I'm anything like as good a photographer as Kerrowdown, but it may as well be on the other side of the moon as I and "the she who must be obeyed" are cocooned until the 5th of May and probably much longer the way things are looking, very rarely do we see the Gardai where I live but we've seen more in the last few days than we'd normally see in a year or two, they've been give new powers to ensure compliance with the lockdown.

I didn't realise what they had done to it, my experience with horses/ponies/donkeys has been using them to draw carts/traps/haywagons and that was a long long time ago, in those days you minded them carefully.
