Some birds of the unfeathered kind ... The Red Arrows flying display team were at the Portsmouth UK D-Day 75th. Anniversary commemorations today 5th. June. Her Majesty The Queen, President Trump and German Chancellor Angela Merkel may have been impressed.

DA*300 and K-3. If the SDM on my DA*60-250 hadn't failed during the session, I might have done better...

When your boat gets too close to The Queen and Pres. Trump at the D-Day 75th. Anniversary commemorations, nearby on the sea front at Portsmouth... the Special Boat Service will come to get you. Taken from about 1.1 miles distant with Pentax K-3 and DA*300mm lens handheld (100% crop).

I had no idea this was in one of my photos of the Red Arrows fly-past, until today. Note the security watch Tower in the background!

Next year, I'll be looking out for the Pentax KC. If it's good enough for the Sunshine Band, it's good enough for the Pentax centenary year. That's the way I like it.

K1 Mode Dial Failure

I'm close to pulling the trigger on a K-1 because here in the UK, the prices are likely to rise this year due to the recent drop in the pound versus the dollar and yen. So I've checked my rights, in case mine should fail. Other UK readers may be interested in these extracts:

For the first 30 days, you are entitled to a replacement or refund if there's a fault (apart from misuse). Let's you go elsewhere to buy, if you need to.

For the next 5 months, any fault is assumed to have been there from the start unless the seller can prove otherwise. And you can get a full or part refund instead of repair if either of the following applies:
  • a repair or replacement would cause you significant inconvenience

  • the repair would take an unreasonably long amount of time.

So in the UK, we should not have to rely on the goodwill of the seller or Ricoh in many of the problem cases mentioned in this thread, we could demand a refund if necessary and go find our own replacement. Within the first 6 months. It puts my mind at rest, I think I will pull that trigger.

New Generation of * lenses

Well I struggled with this problem and when I worked it all out, went for the primes. Here's the comparison (UK street prices):

£1849 DA* 70-200 f2.8 - 2030 grams

£779 DA* 200 f2.8 - 825 g
£459 DFA 100 f2.8 - 340g
£329 DFA 50 f2.8 - 265g
£1567 - 1430 g.

Same apertures, wider range, cheaper, lighter. Less convenient in action of course but the individual lighter weights help a lot, and there may be questions about the DA* 200's edge quality on K-1. But ouch! That weight is what puts me off bigger wide aperture zooms. Even if adding a 55-300WR (£279, 466g) as backup still ends up with the 4 lenses weighing and costing the same as the zoom.

The decision was far from clear cut but I now have the 100 DFA, 200 DA*, 300 DA* and 1.4 converter to handle my telephoto needs, much as the zoom tempted me!

Sigma announcement about K-1 lens issue

True, that's the kind of thing I was hinting at by 'pressure' and 'who knows what?', slight body or lens mount distortion is possible too, slight loosening of the mounted lens on other cameras or in the future, tiny bits of scraped plastic getting inside the lens or body, who knows what. But I'm sure some people are willing to take the risk as none of this is certain or for them is insignificant.

Glad to see it's usable, but the gap may well allow dust grit or water to get in a bit easier than before, and there must be some pressure where there should be none. Who knows what that could lead to in the future, so it's not *only* a cosmetic 'scratch' issue as Sigma imply. Glad they seem to be willing to provide a fix, and though the announcement doesn't explicitly say it will be a 'no charge' fix, I would expect that to happen.

Sigma announcement about K-1 lens issue

The lenses are sold as lenses for [digital] SLR cameras with a Pentax lens mount and if they don't correctly fit digital cameras with a Pentax lens mount (without damaging the camera), they were mis-sold, as long as the camera concerned meets the lens-mount specifications (including any specified clearances etc.). Whether or not the camera model existed when the lens was sold is irrelevant.

If it doesn't fit correctly, the lens is not fit for purpose and not as described (UK law) or whatever the relevant legal wording is in other Countries. Unless Pentax themselves stepped outside the K-mount design specifications with the K-1, Sigma will have to modify or replace and pay for all their non-compatible lenses to be fixed. I am sure they will, and so they should, though initial complaints in the UK are against the seller, not Sigma (sellers would then have a claim against Sigma).

I've just read the entire thread and very interesting it is too, many thanks to all for working out exactly what's going on and why.

I've read some comments about who will have to pay the cost of adapting the 'oversize' Sigma lenses, well I can only speak for the UK (which will be similar to the rest of the EU) and it's fairly clear that it must ultimately be Sigma - though the owner's initial complaint is with the seller. Under the UK's Consumer Rights Act 2015 (as with the earlier Sale of Goods Act), "all products must be of satisfactory quality, fit for purpose and as described.".

Sigma lenses are sold as follows by one major retailer: "This 50-500mm f/4.5-6.3 APO DG OS HSM Lens from Sigma is a zoom lens for digital SLR cameras with a Pentax lens mount. The lens has a standard to ultra telephoto zoom range that is ideal for nature, wildlife, or sports photography. The range translates into an equivalent 75-750mm when used with digital SLR cameras with an APS size chip. The lens is also compatible with full frame cameras."

A Pentax lens mount clearly means a standard Pentax lens mount, so if the lens does not correctly fit a DSLR with a standard Pentax lens mount, it is neither fit for purpose nor as described.

In this case, as long as Sigma or Pentax agree that the mount is outside K-mount specification, and it looks like it is, UK (and probably EU) purchasers should be able to obtain a replacement or repair up to 6 years after purchase... and possibly longer (but I am no legal expert on this). It wouldn't surprise me if for the sake of their good name, Sigma agree to fund the cost of repair or replacement of ALL affected lenses in all Countries but we shall see. If not, they are going to have a lot of small claims court cases to deal with, in the UK at least. ;)

Absolutely, but in some cases the combo is ideal. I got my best ever moonshot last year with my K-3 and DA* 300 + 1.4 TC. I can't match that with the DA* 300 alone, and this was handheld. I did do a bit of sharpening though, hands up for that! I will be surprised if I can match it when I get a K-1 with the same lens combo (later this year).

I like this bit, it sounds like the Pentax we all know and love:

"Although it does offer the high-grade Star series of lenses, some PENTAX enthusiasts claim that the Star series models are the best lenses available, while others insist that the Limited series lenses are more perfectly designed for picture-taking."

Spot on mee, on an APS-C camera this 15-30 produces wide angle shots instead of ultra wide angle shots, which is I think what the poster wants to know. No need for people to complicate it with technicalities!

Here is a crop from both the official Pixel Shift comparison photos at Sample Image? PENTAX K-1 | RICOH IMAGING .

Both halves of the image are 200% crops from near the bottom of the official photos. Moiré? Now you see it, now you don't... not to mention the increase in fine detail. Some of the leaf detail too is astonishing, yes that's the word.

As a rough guide, SRS in the UK have a list of bundles, all at £130 off the lens prices. Their lens prices nearly always match the lowest in the UK so it's a real discount. Considering that they posted all that around 11pm GMT, good work by them - link below.

Without a plausible explanation from them, it amounts to misrepresentation and frankly, wrecks whatever credibility as independent reviewers they had. If they have by unreasonable delay manipulated their league tables this time, they are likely to have done it in the past and will likely do so again in the future.

It really is as simple as that.

For me, one obvious FF advantage will be to make my limited set of primes more useful at the wide end and whenever heavy cropping isn't needed (subject isn't well beyond the frame-filling range). It will in particular help to close the gaps between my DA* 300, 100DFA macro and 40mm primes without buying new lenses or using my lower quality zooms. Expensive way to do it yes, but it will mitigate the cost (whatever that is).

Your location is listed as Oxford. The only Pentax 'dealers' listed in Oxford are the PC World/Currys chain stores (same owners), who are not Pentax dealers. They just sell cameras. Any old cameras, among many other things.

Would be interesting to know if it's somewhere else and which store, otherwise we can all safely assume that it's the usual salesman's rubbish to try and sell you a CaNikony. Your post makes no sense at all and on the face of it the 'information' is nonsense, best ignored.

Nobody with such a poor grasp of the English language as whoever put this together would be likely to know about the plural possessive apostrophe used in competitors' at the top. Nobody that is except a born English speaker trying to fake a Japanese speaker.

And no professional worth his salt would produce such an amateur looking slide, his or her departmental manager would be onto them in a flash, it's awful, simply awful - my 11 year old grand daughter could do better.

Abstract Supermoon Rising (and risen)

Here's the supermoon just after it appeared through the horizon murk, minutes after moonrise/sunset on the 27th. The odd moon colour and distortion are a mix of sunset dust/atmospherics and maybe the camera choosing an odd colour balance. Hand held, braced on a fence, 1/60th on the 300+1.4x converter combo was pushing it too much, I fear!

Below that is the supermoon (crop at 100%) as it appeared high up, shortly before midnight on the same evening, this time at 1/1000th f/5.6 ISO 400 and again handheld braced.
