Thanks! A higher ISO to try to get more shadow detail? With the afternoon sun behind the subject, the contrast was very high.

Does anyone have experience with a gimbal?

The idea with the weights is to exactly counterbalance the camera, which I've done. The balancing method which the manufacturer advises wouldn't work with more weights (although I get the logic) and might put too much load on the motors.

Youtu.be

121g, and there's counterweights of 100g and 20g.

Unfortunately there's nothing I can take off the Theta. Their website says that the gimbal can handle up to 300g. However I think you may be right - that it's the length of the Theta which is the problem, generating more leverage and therefore needing constant correction. However there's an adapter available to put a phone on the gimbal, and I'd have thought that much extra weight would be even more strain. The gimbal actually does stabilise after a fashion, but the vibration makes it pointless. :(

The blue was actually better in the camera JPG. For some reason, DxO made the blue much more pale in the process of colour correction. I'm not sure why. :(

Thank you! I was lucky that this guy is very bold, although I only had time for one quick shot before he flew elsewhere (actually two frames, but the second was blurred).

Thanks! It was tempting to crop more tightly, but I wanted to highlight how tiny the chicks were in a big, wide world. :)

Isn't he colourful?

Yes, he was relaxing before searching for bugs along the path I was walking on. He seems to have decided that it's his territory, and all these people walking on it are getting in the way!

He is!

It's often the case that less colourful birds have a more complex song. Probably the logical example of that in birds where I live is the Lyrebird, which is able to mimic any sound it hears.

Yep! :D

I think the image is only cropped to square from the original proportions. He was very close. I managed two frames before he flew off to hop along the path, but the second one was blurred. I have the custom setting defaulted to f6.3 to try to make the shutter speed as fast as possible, but I do try to stop down a bit if there's enough light. In this case there wasn't time, but happily the PLM focussed quickly. :)
I edged around the plants to get a clear view but his tail is still obscured.

OK, thanks. I'll have to make another attempt at balancing the gimbal. Another possibility is that it's really not designed for the weight and shape of the Theta. :(

Probably. I'll have to see if the local hardware store sells something suitable without buying a whole bag of washers. :D
I had the same problem when I tried to put the Theta on a tripod.

I thought it was odd, but I'll experiment with the balance and see if the behaviour changes. I might also see if it's possible to update the firmware in it.

WRT the Theta, I think it's a design fault - someone assumed that there would be a locknut on any tripod to compensate for the short thread.

Thanks! I was trying to figure out why I would download the app for the gimbal. I followed the instruction leaflet for balance, but it doesn't entirely make sense. The device seems really well made, but the instruction leaflet isn't the best. Having the motors vibrating constantly would presumably also flatten the battery really fast.

I bought a gimbal to try with my Theta V to try to stabilise the video, but the gimbal itself seems to be generating unnecessary constant vibration. The vibration doesn't appear too much in the video except that it makes the audio completely useless, which is a shame. It's possible that either I haven't balanced the gimbal properly, or it is struggling with the weight of the camera (although the gimbal comes with suitable counterweights for 121g). So primarily I'm asking whether it's normal for a gimbal to produce continuous vibration. FWIW it's a Feiyutech G360.

I've posted in this forum because the question is related more to video than the fact that the camera I'm using is the Theta V.

PS Another problem which I've experienced before is that the depth of the tripod mount on the Theta V isn't enough for the camera to be fixed tightly to the mount. :(

Agreed. I did try my K5iis recently with the DFA 150-450 but I found the AF frustrating compared to the K3. :(

I have a photo of a "blurd" from last weekend where the K3 couldn't achieve a decent shutter speed in the shade at 1600 ISO. :( The noise above 1600 ISO on the K3 is unacceptable IMO. As an aside, I notice that the new camera has more user settings than the three on the K3, which is a good thing! I customised one for landscape, one for birds and one for night, but it would be good to have more options. :)

The HC-VXF1 is a current model 4K camcorder. But I have no doubt you're right about the one I have (as opposed to the one I was considering buying)! :)

Hey, even Basho (who popularised the form) wrote haiku that were meant to be humorous or ridiculous. :)
Unfortunately my poem lacked a season word, so it's not traditional even though it followed 575 syllables. I don't think breaking wind is a season word...

I made the unfortunate decision to buy a K7 as an upgrade from the K200D and while in many respects it was an improvement, the noise in the images even at 400ISO was disappointing. I then went to a K5iis which was a huge improvement in image fidelity. Initially the K3 didn't seem like a big improvement, but the AF was significantly better. I have barely touched the K5iis since getting the K3. You're right - the DR of the K5 was a huge step up from the K200D (although the jpegs from the K200D seemed to have quite low noise).

I never had the chance to try a Bigma. I'm curious how its AF speed compares with the DFA 150-450. I had an old Sigma lens and its AF motors seemed much faster than anything I have tried from Pentax (but it was also plastic and not weather sealed). I bought the DFA lens over the Bigma because lens tests seemed to indicate that the Bigma wouldn't give me much improvement over scaling up an image from the DA*300. :(

I like the extra reach and lower bulk of an APSC camera. I think the two things that I'm keen for in the new camera are improved AF and image quality (especially noise reduction) over my K3. Given that the KP apparently had a significant improvement in noise, the K3iii should be an improvement on that, which would be really worth the upgrade.Actually, I'm also really keen to see the new viewfinder. :)

They also won't kill K1ii sales by pricing it too close to the K1ii.
