Am I nuts for wanting manual focus primes?

I think manual focus primes is part of the appeal of shooting with Pentax. You got it with rokinon, one of the main affordable options to shoot current optical designs in a lens housing that work with legacy film cameras.

I have a 58/1.4 (I think version I) with haze in one of the middle elements. I tried to clean and already took a small swatch of coating off testing an area on the edge with alcohol soaked q-tip!:fedup: What do you recommend? Diluting the alcohol?

I'd equally vouch for sony mirrorless, as the used prices are quiet low for older models like the nex-7/a6000. Adapting the lens to mirrorless is easy as adapters are widely available, arguably more user friendly than the previously mentioned M42-to-Pentax K adapters.

Viewfinder coverage on SLR

various parts/brackets to hold the focusing screen/exposure indications in the way and thus you'd have to oversize parts and the prism to compensate is my guess. I do love that pentax has made it a feature of having 100% coverage viewfinders across the board but its too bad the K-1 didn't have greater magnification (0.7x).

Like the pentax MX had 95% coverage at 0.97x!

The Monster adapter (OP) will have an in-built motor to drive the lens' autofocus. The Techart method is the "adapter itself pumping" to achieve focus, mainly for Leica M as it is manual focus from the start and using other lens mounts is to just piggy-back on that method.

Most convenient M42 mounting method?

Probably the easiest method. If the OEM adapters are in scarce supply, you can always get third party ones and wont feel as bad to remove the spring and secure to the back of the lens with locktite. Most M42 lenses are also wide enough at the rear that you'd have additional friction fit. Narrower lenses, I'd tend to use with the clip on as they don't even go past the adapter in width. (e.g Tak 35 or Mir 37/2.8)

(Long time ago) On a larger and heavier lens (eg Helios 40) I did drill a small indent where the locking pin would go to guarantee that I wouldn't accidently twist off the lens on the go. I do have a film camera where I leave an adapter clipped in for M42 lenses only :D

I use Sony now and have a handful of m42 adapters to fit out whatever m42 lenses I might fancy using on a particular outing.

Good call, I bought the vessel 9902 kit from amazon and was worried for a moment as the packaging didn't explicitly say JIS but so far so good! The long length is great even for just lenses when some screws are in tight spaces and screwdriver bits are just too big. My vessel drivers needed to be magnetized though, I use a strong magnet to 'charge' them up before working.

Size and weight impact of upgrading the FA-limiteds to silent AF + quickshift

Might see an upgrade to the FA limiteds if Pentax decides to ditch the screw drive autofocus motor from the next camera after the K3iii. We might already be seeing Pentax testing that transition if the new DFA21 Limit omits the screw drive also, then one can expect new Limiteds for full frame to follow suit in the (distant) future

Oh wow, I would be on the same boat, I'd actually junked most UV filters that came with preowned lenses thinking I'd never use them. I still keep a few pentax film bodies around for when I need to scratch that nostalgia itch.

I cant see your photos but go back to your photos/video record for stages where major things came apart. It would be ideal if you have recorded the point of where the helicoids separated but you can also work backwards to determine the best area to attempt if you have photos of the helicoid assembly before seperation and number of rotations to separation. Note the features on one piece and how they aligned with distinct features on the other piece and how far apart are the gaps.

Otherwise, it will be some trial and error, get the two portions as level as possible. Rotate one piece ccw (or opposite of thread direction) against the other in a slow and gentle manner. If the pieces are level with each other, you will feel a definite 'click' when thread entry point on one crosses a compatible entry point on the other. Then you can rotate cw to assemble the helicoid, note the number of rotations and positions if you have written those down on paper. If you have photos of the helicoid before separation, compare your reassembled configuration with the one in the photo.

As others have mentioned only one alignment will likely preserve infinity focus.

Why persist in using legacy manual lenses

Started off as a cost of entry thing, going manual was a more economical way of getting more for what you had and you would (ideally) make up for the focusing speed with practice. Now I'm not so sure? Maybe the nostalgia or romanticism of it.
