Anyone else receive new 20-40 Limited with stuck hood?

Just wondering: My new (reputable dealer) 20-40mm Limited arrived this week. The hood was firmly stuck on the lens. I tried a rubber kitchen grip; the hood wouldn't t loosen. Filter wrenches just put a small mark (like being burnished) on the lens barrel when one of them finally slipped around the barrel; the hood didn't budge, however. Finally, I warmed up a medical gel pack in the microwave (like one puts on a sore muscle), and wrapped it around the hood for a minute, hoping to expand the hood diameter but not the lens itself. After that, I could loosen the hood, though still with more force than I'd like to use. Anyway, in retrospect I'm wondering if this has been a common situation or mine was an outlier. (Otherwise, it's a very nice lens so far.)

Very handy Lens Comparison query on Photozone

Yes, the FA35 report is quite odd: if I'm reading it right, the report shows more distortion, and more flare, on APS-C than on FF. If (stress on "if") format really can make a difference in such matters, I might have expected any problems to show more readily the other way around, given that more of the glass is in use in FF.

Slide film disaster - the lab developed it negative!!!

Maybe in post processing you can at least get a good enough monochrome (b&w) result. I would assume that would be less involved than trying to correct the colors. Also, a quick googling (of process slide film in c-41) turned up a comment by someone that his photo service was reasonably successful undoing this kind of mistake by shooting copy slides of the erroneously processed film, and then developing the copy slides in C-41 again (I guess that makes it cross-cross-processing). Apparently this undid some of the damage and led to a usable result. (Warning: I've no idea if this is correct, or the theory behind it, though you'd only risk another role of film and the time/money involved.) You can find that post by googling "what are the results of developing slide film (E-6 process) with c41" and looking for the stackexchange search result.
In the future, I'd also suggest using only a lab that regularly does transparency film processing. As noted by others, there aren't that many anymore. I've used Dwayne's Photo in Kansas (by mail from the east coast) with good results; some say Dwayne's is among the highest volume E-6 processors, but I don't know whether that's accurate. You can search the forum and elsewhere for other references to reliable processors.

Extended warranty free CLA service with Precision Camera?

Thanks all for the feedback on my question. I had a good experience, some years ago, with the extended warranty free cleaning/adjustment service from CRIS (when they were the Pentax repair center). The documentation they sent back with the camera (a K-X) indicated that they both cleaned the sensor and recalibrated the autofocus, in addition to whatever else they checked. So I was wondering if that's what Precision does now, or if the service level was more cursory (given other recent comments about Precision). As the AF seems fine and I clean sensors myself, maybe it's not worth the effort to send it in.

Extended warranty free CLA service with Precision Camera?

I'm debating whether to send in a K-30 to Precision for the extended warranty's free cleaning/adjustment. It seems to be working fine, so I'm wondering if it's worth the effort and potential hassle. (It's "now or never," as the warranty soon expires.) Can anyone report on their experiences doing this? Thanks much.

A hypothetical question (so far, anyway): Is this kind of scenario possible, or would it be indicative of, for example, user error or extreme sloppiness in a lens mechanism:

Camera #1, lenses #1 through #6 all need some degree of moderate positive AF adjustment, like +3 or +5 (doing standardized tests--tripod, same flat high contrast target, single focus point, etc.). Camera #2, lenses #1 through #5 all need a similar degree of modest positive AF adjustment, like +3 or +5, but lens #6, on camera #2, needs a negative adjustment (for example, -4).

Put differently: if most lenses (#1 through #5) behave similarly across both cameras (thus suggesting that there's little camera-to-camera variance), is it possible that one lens could still behave in radically different ways across cameras? If the camera bodies don't vary much, if at all, could a particular lens still mesh in very different ways with each body? Thanks for any insight.

16-50 is back to $668 already. Maybe other prices changed too, but I didn't check. It looks like sale prices automatically expire, and then get reviewed and possibly re-established (either due to automatic comparison with competitors, remaining stock, or other relevant variables, or by having someone review them personally).

Some of these prices changed last night. Some are now a very small amount lower, others now are substantially higher. Example: 16-50 now shows list price at one of the stores. Perhaps these were automatic/scheduled reversions to list prices that will be adjusted back down later this week; that seems to have happened sometimes before.

Looking at B&H prices today, it looks like a number of these prices have gone up--sometimes around $50 to $100, in other cases (the FA 31) much more than that. Maybe overstocks from last November/December have been sold down....

In 2015 I had several opportunities to do "camera sightings" in busy/popular (sometimes tourist heavy) places, but the total Pentax tally was slim: 1 K-X with kit lens at an event at a central Pennsylvania university (owner was very happy with it, talked about good value, etc.), and 1 K-3 in the Calgary airport (didn't note the lens). That's all.

B&H / Adorama Deal Roundup - Week of Feb 1 2016

Good points, Penumbra. Regarding Europe prices, and prices generally: I initially wondered if shifts in currency values were playing a role. I compared some currency exchange rates. Current US dollar strength (relative to, say, a year ago) in theory should be making things even cheaper in the USA, and declines in the values of Pentax manufacturing country currencies (Vietnam, Philippines, again relative to about a year or more ago) should be reducing Ricoh's overall production cost (measured in yen or US$). But then (contrary to what I just wrote), one would expect the USA Pentax webstore prices to be lower as well, and they aren't. These current low prices generally seem unique to B&H and Adorama (and a few Amazon sellers which likely are offering gray market items).

Does anyone know if there is an official ending date for the current reduced prices? The January sale prices listed January 31 as the last day; I don't see any indication of a final date for the current sale. Thanks!

I’m sending B&H a used camera for which I got an online quote to sell to B&H. I see that I have to include a copy of my driver’s license or passport, for identification purposes. Is it OK if I cover the actual license/passport number and birthdate/height/weight on the license/passport copy, for obvious security/ID theft reasons? (The license, for example, would still show name and address.) Thanks much for your answer..

Revisiting my old thread with a perhaps humorous bit of information: Amazon Trade-In is now offering all of 25 CENTS for a like new black K-X body trade-in. But toss in a DA L 18-55, though, and suddenly they claim they'll give $100. As before, "go figure..."

Extended Warranty Inspection

I had the extended warranty inspection done on a K-X, by the previous service contractor (CRIS, in Arizona) not long before Pentax switched contractors. So this might not apply to the new arrangement with Precision. But... the whole process took two or three weeks, from send-off to return. The receipt I got indicated that they cleaned it (including sensor), and brought everything to factor specifications. Whether anything was out of factor specification I can't say, because as far as I could tell it was working as well as ever. I did appreciate the apparently thorough sensor cleaning, although I don't think the warranty specifically says sensor cleaning is included. I've got a K-30 that I could send in for the same service, but have been waiting to see how the initial problems people have had working with Precision get resolved.

Also, I called CRIS first to double check all the steps I'd need to follow, etc. I'd do the same with Precision.

DSLR trade-in experience with Amazon

Loco, welcome to the "damaged bundled lenses" club. Maybe PentaxForums should start a "Damaged Bundled Lenses Club" where members can show the wonderful photos they made with their damaged bundled lenses!

What's interesting in Loco's experience is that even with the option to drop offer down to a reasonable $140, Amazon still rejected it for the standard "damaged bundled lenses" reason. So they're rejecting items where Amazon obviously offered too much, and they're also rejecting offers that they probably could make a few dollars on.

As for Amazon's contractor: the repeated experience of this problem perhaps suggests some serious disorganization, almost as though the "buy" side isn't talking to the "sell" side. Or maybe they don't want to admit a buying (algorithm) error by issuing a simple "Sorry, we've got too many of these now" apology (which I think would be easier for customers to accept than the bogus damaged lens claims). Or maybe they're really picky about even a single speck of dust inside a lens.... in which case they should be rejecting most every lens.

K-X vs. K100D Super -- which to sell off?

Not really very important; in fact I've thought of simply giving one, with kit lens, to a family member or friend.... It's as much the clutter reduction, and the idea of something sitting idle that someone else could use, behind the idea of getting rid of one.

Thanks, that's a good point. I should have mentioned that I also recently acquired a K-3, so that could be a K-30 substitute, of course. But were the K-30 to fail, I suppose the K-X would be my preferred short-term substitute for it for size/weight/similarity reasons.

K-X vs. K100D Super -- which to sell off?

I've got a K-X and K100D Super, neither of which get much use, and I can't decide which one to sell off. I want to keep one of them, because I've got a KatzEye focusing screen that will fit either one (for manual lenses). Both have a shutter count of about 5000 and are in excellent condition. As I see it: K-X offers higher resolution and higher usable ISO, better autofocus, a controls/operation more similar to my K-30. K100DS offers an arguably better build quality, and the different CCD sensor (the merits of which have been argued pro and con here and elsewhere). The K-X probably would bring me about $50 more in resale value (checking Keh, B&H and Ebay sales). I have not, so far, been interested in infrared photography, so the K100DS potential in that regard isn't really relevant to me. Am I missing something that should make the choice of which to sell off obvious? Thanks very much.

Tried the new K-3 outside just now; mid-80s ambient temperature (F). Took 35 photos in about 15-18 minutes, mostly (but not always) with the camera in the sun, sometimes with live view on. It was warmer than I reported previously from indoor use, but not what I'd think of as overheated or uncomfortably too hot to touch.

quick question about new K-3

So I received a K3 today with a serial number just a little different from the serial number Loco (originator of this thread) posted in the database for the hot-running K3. I've had no real time to use it, but did sit it next to me letting it do 10 minutes of video recording followed by about 10 minutes of having live view activated. The LCD became warm to the touch (and I could feel warmth issuing from it just by holding it close to my eye). But I wouldn't call it uncomfortably warm--maybe about like lukewarm water. Ambient temperature is 73F. I'll repost if I notice anything more serious, especially on a hot day.

I had to run a K-X about twice as long to start to get similarly warm, which isn't surprising.

Somewhat surprising to me is that while Loco's K-3 came from Amazon, mine was from a different major mail order retailer. Yet the serial numbers are extremely close--both just a little under XXXX900, and the manufacture month is the same, as is the firmware version. I know batches have to be divided at some number, but this still makes me wonder about how serial numbers are assigned and how the distribution process works.

Also, Loco's had a shutter count of 0. Mine had a shutter count of 1.

K-50 still a good purchase?

Recommended highly. I've got a K-30 (which is identical to K-50 save for changes in styling and a few minor upgrades). It's an excellent photographic tool, and a pleasure to use. If you are in the USA, be sure to purchase the 2 year Pentax extended warranty (not third party extended warranty). It is a true bargain--around $20 from B&H or Adorama, and it includes a free inspection/adjusting at any point during the extended warranty period. You don't have to buy it from the same retailer as the cameera; just be sure to get it within 30 days of the camera purchase, and save receipts for both. Given that K-50/K-30 occasionally have been reported by others (not mine) to develop an aperture control problem, the extended warranty gives you a total of 3 years peace of mind.

DSLR trade-in experience with Amazon

When I started this thread, I mentioned that Amazon offered $240 for a K-X with DA L 18-55, which they then mysteriously rejected. Now I see that they're offering $288 for the same condition K-X/18-55 combination--even more than before, despite obviously rejecting one (mine) that was mint except for a missing box (which meant that it fell between Amazon's "good" and "like new" condition, and I was willing to take the "good" offer). So the pricing of offers truly is strange.

As for selling just the camera to Amazon: although they offer $288 now for a "good" K-X with DA L 18-55, for the K-X body alone they offer only $137. That's a big difference for taking away the 18-55, given that 18-55 DA L lenses can be had on Ebay for well under $50. And at $137 for the body, I'd either just keep it, give it to a friend or family member, or sell it to B&H or Keh for a little less than Amazon's supposed offer (to avoid the risk of Amazon's bad return packaging).
