Is it possible to output live view from the K5 to a Nexus 7 tablet? I'd like to use the tablet as a live view display for framing and focusing.

I've grown through three sizes of the Western Digital Passport drive - now on the 1TB size. These have been convenient and totally reliable for me.

I often carry just the 21 and a 50. 28/30/31 is nice when I want to simplify.

What was the development time and agitation? I've had this happen with stand-development (1-hour) with little or no agitation. Gave up on that and went back to shorter times with agitation every 5 minutes, even with very low developer concentration (eg Rodinal or LC-29 at 1+100).

MZ-5 or?

MZ-3 is very similar to the MZ-5n, but with a 1/4000 top shutter speed rather than the 1/2000 available with the MZ-5n. Nice, but harder to find.

Do you know the Bojidar Dimitrov website? Wonderful resource for the K-mount cameras and lenses. Check this table for a comparison of the MZ cameras. You can click through for more details on particular models.

So many excellent photos in this thread. Old cemeteries are best; inspiring, peaceful.

Here's one from St John the Baptist churchyard in Canberra.

(And a little wider in the gallery. Stitched from 6 exposures, K20D & FA31LTD.)

MZ-5 or?

Hi Axl. I've been shooting with a MZ-5n a bit over the last 10 days. Someone offered me one at a good price, so I grabbed it despite my already having the MZ-5 version.

The viewfinder isn't too bad, but not as big or as bright as the LX. For precise focusing I have more confidence in the LX. The exposure readout in the viewfinder of the MZ-5n is pretty difficult to read in daylight - I know it's there but I have to make a concerted effort to see it. The autofocus has been quite reliable with FA lenses, but will hunt at times, especially with the camera in vertical orientation.

For street shooting I think a manual focus camera with a bigger and brighter screen, using the pre-focusing technique, would be more reliable. The LX (or one of the K2 models) with the 31 LTD is a killer outfit. :)

Edit: the MZ-6 has a faster top shutter speed (1/4000) but a lower viewfinder magnification (0.7x).

When will Pentax listen? - DA 24mm f2

For the discussion, and the day.

Pentax-A 24/2.8 at f/2.8. You have to focus pretty close to achieve significant subject isolation.

Lest we forget.

I think f/2.8 is a pretty good compromise.

Very promising results showing here - thanks to all those posting. Is anyone doing daylight shots (eg moving water) with a 10-stop ND filter? On my K20D these always show considerable banding on exposures over about 45-60 seconds, getting worse as the sensor heats up with subsequent exposures. I'd really like to hear that Pentax has this problem beaten.

That's a great catch Rense - well done! And with the 55 on the 6x7 you were quite close. How do you like the 6x7 for this sort of work?

Pentax-F 28/2.8 vs. FA 31/1.8 Limited

Thank you for those good samples. To my eye that is certainly very acceptable bokeh, and at this size the sharpness appears very reasonable.

The 28, being a shorter focal length, will render the out-of-focus areas with slightly less blur for a given aperture and focus distance. The 31 will be able to render the out-of-focus areas more out of focus by virtue of the slightly longer focal length, and the extra stop+ of aperture.

Now, I wonder about corner sharpness and chromatic aberration.

Pentax-F 28/2.8 vs. FA 31/1.8 Limited

Just wondering if anyone has done a direct comparison of image quality with these two lenses? The 31 is of course legendary for image quality, while the 28 has some very favourable reviews and good scores (average 9.38) in the lens reviews database (here) and is a fraction of the size and weight of the 31. The focal lengths of these two are close enough that they could be considered interchangable. It would be too much to expect the little 28 to be as good as the 31, but especially on a cropped sensor, how much better is the 31 in practice? :)

Phil - is Lens & Shutter still operating in Vancouver? I've found an old reference to them having stock of that lens hood. :)

Shoulder bags

I would seriously suggest that three bodies, six lenses, flash plus accessories is too heavy to comfortably carry in a shoulder bag. For the sake of your spine, please consider a proper backpack that will evenly distribute the weight. I've learned this the hard way.
