K-1 MK2 - Unhappy with results at moderate ISO settings

100% crops yes. Here is ISO400 crop from few weeks ago:

Absolutely beautiful rendition of night sky. All kinds of stars, bright and faint ones rendered like they should be. This kind of exposure will render smooth, clear, star trails. I will look at my archives for D3x frames, it is now 10 year old device.

K-1 MK2 - Unhappy with results at moderate ISO settings

I took some star trail stacks yesterday and exposed one frame @ ISO1600, 4 minutes. Here is crop from the frame with NR-module disabled in Lightroom:

DO NOT use higher than ISO400 when exposing the night sky. "Underexpose" @ ISO400 and push in post. Star trail stacks will look worse than 10 year old DSLR cameras if you go over the filtering limit. If stacked to full circle, filtered frames assemble into thick streaked low-definition rings. Also shown is Sony 36MP chroma noise which is there like with all Sony 36MP cameras when used at high ISO. Accelerator does not remove it but will blur it which also removes clear edges from faint point light sources.

Here is crop from ISO800, 30 second frame:

Now you see where those blurred streaks come from. After the filtering does not recognize high enough contrast difference, faint stars will be almost eaten out. This is worse than Sony-issue which completely loses some 1-pixel sized stars. Instead, we get smeared blobs all over.

Improving battery life on K-1

100 shots is about right if taken with careful live view composing (several minutes per frame) in >= +5C temps. This is with original D-LI90. Continuous 30 seconds stacks allow for 1000+ exposures in same conditions but drops to ~150 in -30C. K-1 MK2 has lower shot count when doing long exposures.

Interval shooting with bulb-timer (K-1)

Either one works for me. But now it is half-finished solution as multiexposure interval is already there with bulb-timer.

I do have separate remote interval release, actually 3 of them, but I usually forget those or they have run empty on battery. It is more convenient to have those in-camera especially in nasty weather.

Pixel shift not working for me

Pixel-Shift is ~equal to Foveon IQ when done properly. Only the resolution goes beyond Merril cameras. That is, one can use 100% crop as final image and viewer will have problems seeing it is a crop. But this requires

a) steady subject and steady tripod and delayed shutter release (if done without remote release)
b) sharp contrasty lens without lots of aberrations shot at optimal aperture (no diffraction)
c) proper post-processing

See this article: Pentax K-1 Review - Pixel Shift in the Studio - Photography Classes in Seattle | National Park Photography Workshops | Photography Classes in Seattle | National Park Photography Workshops

It still stands, Lightroom digs out the most details from non-MC PS file. RawTherapee is better in masking motion though.

Pentax K-1 Mark II accelerator unit vs. denoise filters in Darktable

There are already machine learning demos which far surpass everything so far when it comes to denoising images.

One here:

You Tube

Another: Learning-to-See-in-the-Dark/README.md at master cchen156/Learning-to-See-in-the-Dark GitHub

So, now all is needed is extra computing power in-camera and some material for AI to learn.

Interval shooting with bulb-timer (K-1)

K-1 (mk2) has option to do in-camera multiexposures (interval composite) with bulb-timer BUT it is not possible to select interval shooting only with bulb-timer. Please fix this. It is more convenient to take 60x60 or 30x120 or even 15x240 second stack instead of 120x30 second for star trails stacking. For thicker and longer trails this is essential fix and huge data saver.

Okay what is the point of 85mm large aperture lens for DSLR? AF performance is so-so with these lenses for CaNikon also. They hit what they hit. Not always the intended spot. For mirrorless system they could make some sense.

Indeed. I have found handholding hi-res cameras a bit impossible to make any proper use of them without a flash.

What technique was used to take for example the 3rd color photo? Handheld or tripod? It does not have very high IQ when viewed in large size.

Landscape testing Pixelshift with longer exposure

Ya, long exposures sometimes work with PS. Artifacts will be different type or visually hard to spot compared to typical short PS exposures with movement between frames. I often combine long exposure PS frame with normal frame and mask any artifacts with content from normal frame. RawTherapee has automatic masking BTW which works quite well. But it is not Lightroom.

Good thing is that usually rocks and other large mass objects do not move and pop nicely with extra sharpness.

Awww, let's fix that. "One good cure is to buy a camera with a fixed lens". But...then one needs many different fixed lens cameras. No wait...there is already Sigma Merril series.

One good cure is to buy a camera for which one can find no lenses. For example Leica Q. Or 4000€ Fatbike. Much more useful than stupid camera gear and also gets one in good shape physically. Leica Q fits in small backpack when cycling around the wilderness. Although I would rather take some snacks instead of Leica for long runs.

Serious advice: Get a top of the class lens like Zeiss 135/2 APO. After that there is no return to coke bottle bottom lenses.

Astro Tracer Failure?

My comfort temperature is about +5C and anything above that is a nuisance as it limits physical performance of human body too much during high pace activity. I have noticed most hi-res cameras start to fail after +20C too. +30C being IQ limiting border.

Astro Tracer Failure?

Sony 36MP sensor camera bodies do not usually need long exposure noise reduction when time is 30 second or less. In extreme heat I would use it (+30C or more). When using astrotracer for longer than that, it is somewhat useful.

I recommend trying out Leica M9 should you have such possibility some day. It gives sparkling files particularly with Zeiss Biogons.

From a k-1 user real world impressions about the k-1 II

Yes it is. If I hold the lens (Zeiss 50MP) tightly by hand and fire away with MLU I can still feel the shutter resonating thru the lens body (or tripod legs). Multiexposures cannot be used with electronic shutter (plain dumb feature) and firing away 256x exposures with MLU is even more hassle should it cure something (it does NOT). I have workaround for this - ND filter to make exposures long enough but not too long. Combining few second exposures with multiexposure averaging is superb technique for smooth IQ.

I started with K200D and 18-55mm kit lens. This was one of first landscape images I took with it. The CCD sensor gives better colors than modern K-1 body which after some tweaking comes close but not enough. Leica M9 is about the same.

I combined it with Photomatix trial back in 2008. Oh gosh. Funny thing I purchased it later and it was lifetime license which still works this very day. Not that I use it anymore.

Nothing wrong with the review. In the end it says: "So it's big, it's heavy and it's very sharp."

Anyone experienced with high-end lenses knows extreme performance comes at the cost of one or two side effects. Even Zeiss Otus lenses have issues, for example minor focus shift (bad).

Oh the shutter shock is there with MK2. Just use shutter speed between 0.5s and 1/20sec, put camera to multiexposure average mode and shoot the stack. Output is more or less messed up. Much less of an issue towards faster speeds or longer exposures.
