My MX-1 photos - first steps

I payed a similar price new. Donít know what to replace it with, considering the lens and the size. Itís still my main camera, I donít want to carry heavy stuff.

People use 1000$ iPhones and Samsungs instead of a camera. I canít understand, this MX-1 is so much better.

Lots of brass here. I don’t use any protection except for the lens. I like that used look :)

MX-1 aftermarket Lens Cover removal!

I wouldn't attach one of those too.

I use the simple manual one which came with the camera. But it is not attached to the camera by string, this is clumsy and obstructing. I got used to remove it and just place it in my pocket. After a week, you do this automatically and will not even think about it.

MX-1 in montreal

Actually last year I planned to buy a Olympus XZ2. But I couldn't find one. Saw a discounted MX-1 and took that instead. Still happy with it, the black color goes away and it makes awesome pictures. My best travel camera and I don't think there is anything seriously better with that size at the moment.

I also use it regularly. Often overlooked, this is one of the great features you don't want to miss anymore.

Thinking about replacing my MX-1 with a Fuji X30.

Both.

Personally I only shoot raw. This is the way how to use cameras like the X30 or MX-1.

The X30 will not deliver better quality than the MX-1. Use dpreview studio test scenes and see yourself. Both cameras are almost equal and perform similar.

But the X30 is indeed a very nice camera, especially the handling and EVF. So if that is important to you, go for it.

A while ago I had a USB stick in my washing machine. After I dried it, it was working fine and I could still access all files.

Disclaimer: don't put USB sticks in washing machines...!

MX-1 and latest big sensor compact cameras

There is an interesting comparison which proves my point between the Olympus XZ-2 and the Nikon APS-C D3300. The site is in German, but you can use a translator. Pictures (full size with Exif downloadable) speak for themselves.

Sonstiges 1/1.7" Olympus XZ-2 und APSC Nikon D3300 - DSLR-Forum

I'd assume that the MX-1 is even slightly better than the XZ-2.

Thanks! This is a very thorough test site and with a translator quite understandable even for non-polish speakers.

MX-1 - New Firmware update

Probably a hardware limit. With a fast class 10 SD card a raw file writes in 2-3 seconds. Not too bad for 20 MB. And switch off raw+jpeg, the raw includes a perfect full jpeg already. IPads can read/import the raw and save as jpeg of about 3 MB.

Oh I see. I have Highlight correction off, but I run all my photos raw through DXO. Which also increases DR. It is a fast process once you got used the workflow.

Did you do any tests, do the in-camera corrections really improve the quality?

Ricoh GR for backpacking?

I was almost buying the GR for the same reasons.

I did not. While 90% of my travel photos are in the 28-50mm range, I still need some more zoom occasionally. You will miss it if you don't have it. Especially when travelling where you often shoot fast and cannot plan in advance.

So i use a MX-1, which has the perfect zoom range for me and due to its fast lens, I rarely need to go over ISO 800, even many low light photos are fine with ISO 400 or so.

The Olympus XZ2 would be a good substitute. But what would you buy, if neither is available anymore? I'm not convinced of the Sony RX100 or the Pany LX100 - both very expensive and not really better. The only upgrade would be m43 or DSLR.

Mx-1 X-mas

Night shots like that, I use Tv Mode. If not zoomed in, you can set t=0.1s or a bit shorter, the image stabilization is that good. With contrast that high, you probably need to correct exposure up to one step.

Shoot raw in these cases, which allows for much better correction later on. A pic like that could probably be done with ISO 200-400 and crisp sharp.

First photo: why ISO 800 with long exposure? And f6.3 is also not the best, better f4 or so. There are some overexposed areas, should be corrected with PP if you shoot raw.

Considering ditching Q for Mx-1

I just read an enthusiastic review of the Canon G16. According to the review, it is the top compact camera.

Got curious and did some studio comparision at dpreview.

Result: nothing to envy. The G16 has a bit longer zoom, but softer lens and at higher ISO it is also worse than the Mx-1.

Seems, we MX-1 owners do still have the top model. A real upgrade would be a DSLR with a high-quality lens.

Any rumors of pentax MX-1 successor?

It doesn't have a hotshoe and doesn't have a viewfinder. And there is no way around it. If that is important to you, you should search for alternatives.

But the picture quality of the MX-1 is well above the G12. That's what's most important to me. I never missed the hotshoe, but a viewfinder would make it perfect.

The Olympus XZ-10 is already 2 years old and a consumer p/s camera, not a high-end product. It is far worse than the MX-1.

There is an interesting discussion going on at dpreview "LX7 vs LX100". So far many say that the LX100 is not that much better, despite the large sensor.

The LX7 is also a small sensor camera, but slightly inferior to the MX-1. So I guess a "MX-1 vs LX100" would come to similar conclusions.

I suggest to use the free version of DXO Optics Pro instead of Silkypix. It supports the MX1 including lens correction.
