I am starting to believe this may be an age, experience thing. Started in the 1970's with 35mm SLR's (Fujica series and Chinon). Clarity and brightness of viewfinder was never a problem. Purchased a Mamiya C220 twin reflex and learned the difference in the viewfinder compared to the 35mm SLR.

All the early digital were poor resolution viewfinder and lcd's but you learned to adapt. When I purchased a Sony DSC-R1...now that was a step up.

Purchased a kx and k30...nice cameras generally, viewfinders-OK, but not like the non-digital SLR's.

Purchased a K1....and OMG...it was like the old days. Can look through the viewfinder forever, no eyestrain, all info crystal clear. A 645D-same thing. I have one mirrorless- Samsung NX-1 - can use the viewfinder but nothing like K1.

I would worry if the k-1 had many know issues and therefore may become not worth fixing. I have not seen this reported on the forums so far. Every electronic item has a cost/benefit in repairing versus replacing. At this point I see nothing to be concerned about.

Cleaning a glass, uncoated, unmounted lens would be different than a glass or plastic lens, already coated, mounted, and already exposed to the elements.

simple work even on a piece of equipment that is worth $50k....look at the lens with a bright light....your phone...if the lens is smudged/oil/fingerprints/etc...microfiber cloth will not scratch...it will just eventually smudge your lens and then you need a new one. If lens shows physical dirt it is going to need to be blown off with a manual blower..then cleaned. Microfiber back in ouch it came in keeps it clean enough. Even a new cloth can scratch a lens. Just based on my experience.

LensPen anyone?

History of cleaning optical lenses...to my knowledge....originally soap, water, and fine cotton cloth was used on optical lenses like glass lenses before the 1980s. Camera lenses have coatings and fine cleaning paper and solution made for camera lenses was used originally. Then microfibre came out and due to the fact each fibre is like a perfectly smooth rod, it will generally not scratch a lens. So glasses, camera lenses, expensive health care optical lenses/equipment are cleaned with these cloths and non-alcohol spray cleaners. After many cleanings just get rid of them-do not wash them and use on lenses.

Lenspen with activated carbon...they are only designed to be used on optical lenses...NEVER on a sensor, camera mirror. Problem IMHO is that they require a lot of rubbing in a circular motion to get an entire lens clean. Microfibre cloth, one pass and clean. Some swear by the pens...I just did not get good results on camera lenses or patient glasses.

So to my knowledge...how do manufacturers of equipment in health care with expensive optical lenses (instruments in the 50-100k cost) clean the lenses...a $5 kit of a new microfibre cloth and lens cleaner spray.

Regards.

Pentax 28mm Shift Lens

Someone in the Toronto area advertised on Kijiji a Pentax 28mm Shift lens for sale in "mint" condition. So I read the reviews, contemplated, thought about the positive and negatives...and then thought...maybe. The lens was advertised for $500 CDN. We had an ice storm/snow storm today...so I offered him $450 if I came today and drove to his area...and we agreed on $475. I thought what am I getting into, considering how rare these lenses are and the price is way too low. Just picked it up a few hours ago. The lens appears to be in mint condition as advertised! No paint missing, no scratches, no fungus, no dust, and all controls work smoothly. So here is the kicker. I asked the seller how he got this rare lens. No answer. I took a photo on my K1 and he asked to see the lcd. So I asked him if he took many photos with it. He answered-"I don't have any Pentax equipment". This goes into my file folder for weird/lucky/wonderful. Now if I can find a 20-35 like this in my area!!!

I can only imagine the sound that came out of your mouth once it was completely disassembled ! Especially since a used one on ebay is $70-80 !!!
If you do not get it back together....file under learning session. Someone sold me a 17-28 once....went to the trouble of having them post on ebay so we could make the transaction. Got it...and the aperture blade was stuck. Turned out owner had loaned it out in the past and never checked it before selling it. I took it apart...not as much as your 100-300. Told my wife to please not enter the room. After much prayer...got it straightened out and back together. And now 2 years later the aperture blade is stuck again!

Ricoh Imaging sales are roughly half those of Leica - Pentax Rumors

Car show photography etiquette

Rules for photogs at car shows: you can look but do not touch ; do not go behind barriers or ropes unless owner/show staff agree. hardest part is getting shot without another member of the public not in it; if you like the car and want a better angled shot, talk to the owner and inquire about the car-how long have they had it, who rebuilt it, is it taken to many shows, etc. Sometimes the person standing beside you that you think is a member of the public is actually the owner.

How many photo stores have Pentax dslr cameras in stock to show customers? Almost zero. Yet Pentax is still selling cameras. The GRiii as I understand is selling worldwide quite well, and how much advertising has been done, how many stores have product on hand? Almost zero, and yet it still sells. Would be nice to have Ricoh/Pentax at the show, but with a limited budget and no new products, not at the top of their list. When their new camera comes out I am sure they will spend more dollars on showing it.

Can we please keep a running count of how many times internet sites and comments have stated that Pentax is dying or dead. Wait....I think dpreview does that every year!

experiences traveling on airlines with cameras

In the case of the screwdriver...security took possession of it and let me through

But...the golf putter was purchased as a gift...came with 2 balls and an automatic putter return in a beautiful wooden box 1ftX1 ft. US security actually said the wooden box was not a security risk, the balls were not a risk, just the collapsing putter. In order to not miss my plane I told them to just keep the whole thing. Except that is not how it works. The rule is that I must go back to the airline check in, get them to find my checked baggage, put the item into my baggage, and return with proof this was done! So I rush back to the counter and found a very sympathetic customer service rep. She actually had the same thing happen. She graduated in music, decided to learn how to tune pianos and work at the airline full time for now. She purchased in NYC a tuning hammer (a few inches in length), took it on as carry on...and security found it. No hammers allowed on planes. So she had to do exactly the same thing as me. She was able to retrieve my bag, put the item into the bag, and then take me back to security and get me through. So tripods, knives (even plastic), screwdrivers, tripods, etc, all in check in luggage.
