No. I've picked a developer for now that I'm very happy with.

No, I've selected F76 and like what I'm seeing, maybe next time. Or maybe not.

Yeah, after reading through it, it wasn't a great article. I do find comparisons in lenses like these somewhat interesting. That said, I think there's a number of folks here that have done better work, and that's outside of the PF "staff".

I shot this on Ultramax 400, developed in F76+, and did minimal post-processing in Lightroom & Photoshop to get to this image. Used dev instructions for Tri-X and added an additional 45 seconds to get here.

I kind of wish he had thrown in the M 50 f4 Macro as that lens interests me quite a bit. What's your quibbles with the M 50 1.4? I've had one for a while and don't love how, wide open, it can turn light sources into big fuzzy beach balls when other lenses seem to fair much better. Like street lights at night turning into a mass of light fuzz. His copy of the M 50 1.4 sounds pretty worn out. I thought he was a bit hard on his M 50 1.7 as well.

I don't believe this has been shared yet. I've not read it myself but I'm about to. Seemed interesting.

I'm using Tentenal wetting agent, not Edwal LFN. The Edwal Film Cleaner was purchased so that I may remove water spots after developing & drying. I don't think I was using nearly enough of the wetting agent when I developed the first roll of film. Give me a few days to finish off the roll in the camera, develop that roll, and see what I can work out. I liked the previous suggestion of hanging the film over at an angle to dry and get the water to run towards the sprockets, and I'll try to shake the negative a bit before hanging to encourage the water to fall off before it's hung.

I think I just need to use more of the wetting agent that I have mixed up. I didn't use much at all that first time and the tank was far from full. Maybe 20%. My second set of negs I had the tank much more full and I didn't have water deposit issues that were noticeable like the first roll's.

Thanks for everyone's feedback! This has been pretty great so far and I definitely want to keep going with developing film.

Recommendations on how to apply the Edwal film cleaner then? Feedback on the development process as far as when to do the final rinse vs wetting agent, and then how to "do" the wetting agent? Still not warm and fuzzy to the idea of mechanically removing the water from negatives using a squeegee.

It's strange how nice that lens is to look at. Didn't know about an f1.2 50mm Special.

"Best" is so subjective. At this point, for my film camera, I think the M 50 1.7, M 50 4 Macro, and Ricoh 55 f1.2 all seem like "the best" k-mount 50 to 55mm lenses I could own. I have one of those coming and don't own the other two so what do I know...

I bought some Tentenal wetting agent and mixed it per the ratios on the bottle using distilled water. I put that mix into one of those ubiquitous brown bottles that are nearly 1 liter. I take it I should do the normal Final Rinse using running tap water for ~10 minutes per instructions from Massive Dev Chart (MDC) and then dump the tank then fill with the wetting agent solution and... agitate for a minute? And then dump and hang the negative?

I've read good and bad about using a film squeegee to the point that I'm leaning away from using one. I've also ordered some Edwal Anti-Stat Film Clean which I assume is lightly applied with a soft cloth and wiped over the film after it's had a good long drying period. Feedback requested.

What's going on here with the two marks in about the middle of the frame?

Looks like water spots. Nearly every frame had them in the image. I made sure to tap the tank a couple times after each inversion / set of inversions. Perhaps related, how much wetting agent should I use, approximately, with a single roll of 35mm in the tank and I'm at the end? How long & how to handle? I'm using the Android app from Massive Dev Chart and it doesn't talk about wetting agent, unless "Hypo Clear" is wetting agent. I'm using some stuff from Tentenal mixed per their instructions.

The above is from my first roll of film that I've developed myself. Foma 400, 1+9, no push/pull, using instructions from Massive Dev Chart. F76+ developer. I'm really happy with how it came out overall, just looking for ideas on the water marks. I didn't try to remove excess water myself, just let it hang and drip off on its own.

I don't know, I look at that Samyang 135 f2 and think how nice that might be to use with my film camera... Also the Sy 20mm f1.8 and Laowa 12mm f2.8 both look quite nice.

Little help picking K-mount SLR?

I've shot maybe 50 rolls through an XR7 as my first real film camera. In short, I really like it. I'd love it if it offered the following; non-reliance on batteries to drive the shutter through most if not all of the available speeds, and an illuminated light meter display. In low light the LCD meter display is basically useless, like match needle displays of yore.

I've not used a CM-5 yet, but plan on buying one sometime this year. It's got three LED's for light meter readout (oddly slightly outside the viewfinder, so you could see the meter while the camera is on a tripod I guess) and the shutter can be fired with the film advance lever is fully returned instead of sticking out slightly like the MX and a lot of other cameras of that era. I don't think the CM-5 has a judas window to read the aperture ring's position which is kind of a drag, and it seems like five LED's would be better than three...

Have you ever picked up a Minolta XG-M? The light meter is crazy! I held one for the first time last week and it seemed really cool. Like, cool enough to leave k-mount for film cool, but maybe I'm being silly with that idea.

Nikon FM10 with a basic kit lens seems to go for about $570 USD as I write this. I can't see Pentax selling a brand new LX, made to the same quality as the original LX, going for less than $1000.

And there's the rub; the FM10 is a Cosina CT-1 derivative. I cannot imagine spending that kind of money on a Nikon-badged CT-1. The used market would make this extremely difficult for anyone that isn't Leica to actually make money.

I think if people want that sort of camera they would just buy a Nikon F6.

This isn't the kind of camera I would want to purchase. I think I'd rather have a brand new LX or MX with a few tweaks.

Your requirements are a bit odd. Needs to be all metal. Not basic like a K1000. Cheaper than an MX and should be as cheap as an old deal on an OM-1.
Has an automatic mode of some sort. No pushbutton interface for controlling the camera body.

The best camera I could think of for all this is a Pentax LX. It's everything you want save for price.
Next might be the XR-7 but you don't like it because the top deck is plastic (this has been debated, oddly enough). It has an automatic exposure mode and doesn't need P-pin equipped lenses; K and M series Pentax lenses work with the XR7's auto mode just fine.
After that, the Chinon CM-5 might be of interest, but it's a bit more plastic-bodied than the XR7. This camera actually interests me a lot and is something I'd be interested in picking up some time.

I don't think you're going to find the perfect camera for you with a k-mount on it. One of the cameras I've mentioned here might get you close.

I ended up putting in a big order for a bunch of different individual rolls. Hoping to try and develop my first roll of film this Sunday, some Fomapan 400, which I only used because the other stuff hasn't shown up yet and I figured I should start with something cheap.

I also own that Tokina 28-70 and find it to be pretty nice. Great close focusing abilities when put into "macro mode". A great all-around for a film camera, I probably wouldn't use it much on digital.

Might be a fun challenge to DIY clean up but a zoom lens like that could be quite difficult.

K-5 II on a DIY copy stand made from a piece of PVC sewer pipe and some other bits and pieces. Processing done with Lightroom and Photoshop Elements. Pretty manual process although I'm getting faster as I do more of it. 24 black and white negatives "converted" and saved as TIFF's takes maybe half an hour or so now. Color is usually a little slower to make sure things are really correct as far as color balance and such.

There's always a bit of cropping and possible rotation required to get things square. My method still seems to get me better quality images than having the negatives scanned by the lab that's been doing my film development.

Best cheap thin 50?

Yeah, my plan is to employ a couple step down rings to make a really ugly version of the DA 40 Ltd's hood that is also functional. Thinking a final opening of about 40mm should be large enough in diameter to not vignette.

That's awesome! From here it looks like the 50 1.7's and 50 2.0's are all pretty close to each other, with the thinnest being the A 50 f2 and the thickest (surprisingly) being the M 50 f2.

I think that settles it, that unless there's something from the 3rd party lens manufacturers that hasn't been mentioned yet, an M 50 1.7 would be my best bet. I'll give up 1mm for the increase in light grabbing and general IQ wide open.

So I've got some of the lenses that have been discussed and I noticed something; the F 50 1.7 and M 50 1.4 seem to be the same height. So I did this little sloppy test;

I wanted to compare the lenses about how they would actually be installed on whatever camera I'm using. So for the M 40 on the left, it has the DA 40 Ltd hood installed with a film can cap installed. Then the F 50 1.7 with the thin caps that have been on FA and DA lenses. Finally the M 50 1.4. I'd probably use a UV filter on the 50's, honestly, but this is still a valid comparison as the "winner" would get the same filter, making it a wash.

From what I can tell using just eyesight, the F 50 1.7 is at most a single millimeter shorter than the M 50 1.4. All lenses are at their shortest via focusing them to infinity.

Is the M 50 1.7 any shorter than either the F 50 1.7 or the M 50 1.4?

p.s. great work on that F series focus ring, Pentax, really nice work there, it's almost usable.
p.s.s. I'm not buying an A 50 1.7 when M 50 1.7's are cheaper and more sturdy and good lord people I've already stated this.

It really is a case of "too much". The hood is bonkers, it doesn't take normal filters, it's huge. I don't need an optic that wide. 17mm with my Tamron is plenty if not a bit much. It's like a party trick and not a generally useful lens if that makes sense.
