Pentax K-1 Video Quality - Dynamic Range/Matching with other cameras/Best Practices

Happy K1 owner here.

I work professionally in film/video, and while I haven't messed around with the K1 seriously - I think even with low/no budget you can get much better options. A used GH2 will blow it out of the water and can probably be found for $200 bucks or less.

5D MKII with Magic Lantern is a substantially more flexible option. GH4 shot on 4k and downres'd to 2K will absolutely destroy it.

I mean - I am sure it is usable if you are OK with heavily compressed 4:2:0 8bit and almost no customizable options. But I don't really know why one would when there are so many better cheap options floating around.

The K1 is a camera designed for photography, and for that, I think it is the best bang for buck currently on market. Honestly, I think they could have just left video off altogether, a la the Nikon DF, and put something else where the REC button is.

K-3ii to D500... Is this the right move?

It's like when young engineers out of school come to me, ask for advice, then they say "no, I prefer to do it my way", then I smile , watch them fail and come back , and say "Ah you were right, how did you know that?"
It's the same for cameras, except what happens, after they switch, they can't switch back because they've already spent the money , it's too late even if the photos will be the same, and usually the photographs taken after switching are the same as before. It's a complete fallacy that you will improve your photographs by switching brands. A way to really improve your photographs is to read books, go to trainings and workshops (not about gear, but about photography). Go go go , get a Nikon, get a Sony, get a Canon... you will have spend tons of money and your know-how in photography will have not progress at all , you'll still be taking the same photos, just with a different brand.

I like my 10-20mm, even though I agree on color rendition: I have to fiddle a little bit in the HSL panel to get the color(s) I want.

I can't think of another brand that would give me the same experience for dollar spent, especially since I like to buy my equipment new.

"There can be only one"

Yep, just like the thread title says, my 7yr old daughter, who has been using cameras since she was five, picked her favorite.

Since I've re-acquired a few Pentax items of late, I had an idea. I was curious what she would think of five different Pentax DSLR's. She hasn't seen any of the five before tonight's test, so it was to be a blind spontaneous test.

I laid out all five in front of her with a lens attached, and asked her to pick up each one (in the order she chooses) to take one or two pictures with each. Then move to the next one and do the same. She gladly picked up each one, and even made a request for different lenses on two of them (she didn't like the long focus throw of the 35mm macro LTD .. haha!). I obliged her, and let her reshoot. I only answered questions during the test. I did not influence her decision at all.

At the end of the test she picked her favorites and why, her words!

#5- KS2 - It came in last because she picked the four others first. She didn't have much to say other than it had pretty round lights in it.
#4- K50 - "The grip is a little big and slippery for me"
#3- K70 - "I like this one Daddy"
#2- K5IIs- "I like how it feels in my hand, and its quiet. It feels strong in my hand"
#1- K3II - "Its the prettiest one. It feels the best in my hand. It feels the strongest"

After it was done, she picked up the K5IIs (ironically) and took about 20 pictures of the house. And then said "Dad, I'm sure I like the silver one best (K3II). I just had to try this other one out again. Its the quietest and the silver one is second quietest. Can I try that one for a while?" So I told her to be extra careful with it, but that she could. She made about 30 images with it, most of me and her star wars lego collections. She seemed fascinated by it for whatever reason. And lastly she added that the K3II was the easiest for her to shoot with of all five.

I thought that it was interesting that she picked the most advanced camera out of all of them, and said it was the easiest to shoot with.

Just sharing, I thought this was precious!

-Carl

What is important for a great photo?

Content is by far the most important. A blurry picture or shaky video of a once in a life world event is still better than an average shot of your cat on the back of the sofa.

Composition is probably next.

After that in a very close (almost tie for second place) would be lighting.

"Gear" doesn't make the list at least not at this point.

Bought by K-50 brand new and had the block failure at 16k. It is still usable as my backup, but super annoying.

Even with my OEM Pentax adapters on K-mount bodies the majority of my screwmount lenses align to about the 11 o'clock position. One or two line up at 12 o'clock. Just the vagaries of the adapters and lenses I would guess.

K-3ii a bug or an estimate - Solved

DNG RAW are losslessly compressed on the K-3II (and on most cameras): that means that the amount and quality of the information has an impact on the final file size.
The camera can't know in advance which pictures you're going to shoot.

Edit: swanlefitte beat me to it! :)

If you shot an over exposed white wall you could probably get 2000 images. How much info is in the picture matters. It makes sense a card would estimate based on "busy" photos.
