Big things coming, or dead in the water? Are we, after all this time, in fact, doomed...DOOMED™!? Or, are we...? We're so bored around here, you could even just LIE and we wouldn't mind.

:D

DA* 250-600 F1.4 anyone?

although my current mantra is zoom schmoom. But that's one I'd probably really like.

Possibly they realized how they'll have to go a LONG way to beat the 10-17 fisheye, a magnificent optic, even when de-fished...

I shot for two weeks straight with this lens on my camera 95% of the time while on holiday in Mexico. I used it all day, everyday, and never got tired of it. Fabulous workhorse of a lens, from 6" to infinity.

Zoom schmoom. My 16-85 now collects dust, it's images looking so ordinary next to this monster of a lens. Sorry, the 15-21-40-70 set rules, with the 21 being the go-to; 40's a bit long, but good for some things, the 15's too wide, but good for some things. The 21 is PERFECT! Man, did they ever nail this focal length, at least for me; YMMV.

Please do a DA Limited 85, 100 or a 135mm F2.8 or F4, Ricoh!

Cheers,
Cameron

...you won't want to use anything else. AMAZING optic, and man did they NAIL that focal length. Pretty much perfect.

Good luck with it! Happy shooting!

I was interested in the history of their negative reviews of Pentax cameras; and their last lens review in 2009 where they also got it spectacularly wrong (DA15 merely 'OK'...). I recently LEFT there site permanently after being a regular reader since the late 90's because of their extremely biased and bad review of the K1ii, and their refusal to re-evaluate the camera even after being caught in complete and total incompetence in the testing of it.

I think this is one of the reasons this place continues to thrive and exist.

Sincerely,
Cameron

Somewhere in there. They've got a great 135 F 2.8 FF design in the archives, just start from that...

and ANXIOUSLY awaiting the 11-18...any news? Or are they doomed...DOOMED!

I've had LOTS of lenses, including a BUNCH of legendary ones over the years, but I have never been so impressed with a lens as I am with the DA 21 F 3.2, or so addicted. Fabulous thing; just go buy one.

Had enough of their nonsense with the current K1ii scandal and them NOT re-evaulating the camera even in light of them being caught with severely flawed testing. They haven't reviewed a Pentax lens since 2009, and called the 15mm F4 'an OK performer'...what?

Their current moderator Rishi acts more like a dictator, and excuses the from all wrongdoing no matter how badly they are caught out or how much we all protest. Let the Canikosony folks have the place. Good luck to them.

Cameron

Thank you for the kind words, and I enjoy your photography very much, Greg, so your input means a lot. And what a LOVELY part of the world you live in - I've driven through MANY times and each time I have I go "I should really come back to this beautiful place".

Yup, the 21 is quite the lens; I shot non-stop for two weeks with it, pretty much effortlessly. If it was my only lens, I would be just fine with that. I find I can pre-visualize with this lens; I have NEVER been able to do that with a zoom. Somehow you just know what's going to fit, and you can predict the results.

15-21-40-70...magical numbers to APSC Pentaxians.

Wish they'd bring out a 135 F2.8 limited...and a 10 or 12mm F4...and very much looking forward to the DA*11-18 F2.8, even though it's a zoom.

Cheers,
Cameron

Just did my first trip to Puerto Vallarta with JUST the limiteds and no zoom (except the 10-17 fisheye, but that's another story). I think I MIGHT be liberating my 16-85. LOVED travelling with the Limiteds in their little Limited Hardshell case - you'd never DREAM it was camera stuff; I looked like some kind of hippy flute player or something. In the case I had the 15, the 40, the 10-17 fisheye, an extra battery, and a couple of filters and a lens cloth. The 21 practically never left the camera - I used it for 90% of my travel shooting. Pentax absolutely NAILED the focal length on this thing, and focussing down to 6" or less, wow....here's some proof. All handlheld, K3ii with no battery grip, so it was nice and small and discreet - I looked like an old guy with a film camera with this setup, and nobody was ever intimidated by it like they often are with a battery grip and a big zoom. I'm definitely going to complete my set with the 70 and eventually the 35 macro but in the HD version (better bokeh); my current limiteds are all green ring for better starbursts.

If you're on the fence at all about this lens, don't be. It is magnificent - PERFECT travelling companion, and the ultimate street shooter. Zoom-schmoom - zoom with your feet. You can just TELL what's going to work with this lens, and that is almost everything. Just watch out if you're near a cliff! (lol!)

Disgraceful. Multiple errors in a 'scientific' test? That place has been reduced to the TMZ/Fox News of the photographic world. Fake photographic news.

Disgusting.

...and yes they are THAT good.

FA* 24, 28-70, 80-200, 85, F*300...

and currently DA* 60-250.

They are all magnificent optics. The Limiteds are right up there with them, aside from the non-standardd ('pro'?) apertures.

Contrast, colour accuracy, saturation, flare control, contrast, sharpness from wide open on up. And a few have ****>>>MAGIC PIXIE DUST<<<****

IMHO, the 24, 28-80, and the 85 all did. The 300 was close.

Get one - you'll see. I doubt if you'll be disappointed. And mine not only kept their value, they actually went up CONSIDERABLY from when I bought them.

Cheers,
Cameron

Pentax K3ii officially discontinued

Yeah, they are bringing out that high-end lens to keep users of their discontinued cameras happy...

:p

There's a new model coming out...btw, I LOVE the looks of both the K1 and the KP, with the macho '67' kind of look to them.

Pentax has some VERY NICE STUFF OUT now. If they could only find a good marketing executive so it could translate into sales...

Hey, I converted a buyer this week...he was going to go Canon 6 something for his astrophotography, and he is now the proud owner of a K1 and a 24-70. I sent him an article on Astrophotography, where it said the Pentax stuff were the best cameras in the world for astrophotography.

Pentax, please send the commission cheque to....

DA 10-17 FE usage tips/quirks/limitations

Pentax always does as superb a job as they possibly can making the front element flat by producing very complex convex indentations on the inside of the outer element. Please compare a Nikon 14mm F2.8 with the Pentax 14mm - the Pentax is virtually flat, the Nikon the front element is HUGE and extremely heavy - also, the Nikon much, MUCH more expensive, and extremely unwieldy on the camera. They've done a similar thing with the 10-17 fisheye - have a look at other makes' fisheyes if you want to see protruding front elements.

I LOVE that lens! Makes for MANLY selfies!

Pentax APS-C Dead-End?

There was a lot of controversy surround this camera and this subject after subsequent models came out, on this and other forums; a TON of discussion, some of which I participated in. I remember it well; I wasn't just pulling stuff out of my ***; I was referring to the general consensus on these cameras at the time. Look it up.

You'll likely try to prove yourself right now and have the last word, so, OK, you're right, I don't know anything.

Sheesh,

They went to all the trouble to remove the filter because it was inhibiting the performance of the camera. I own one. It's soft till you sharpen things up.

Pentax APS-C Dead-End?

You do know the K5 has a very very strong anti-aliasing filter, so everything is a bit on the soft side from that camera? You can compensate by sharpening more than usual, but get a K3ii with a 16-85 and tell me that doesn't just rock your world. And with the DA limiteds...forgetabout it. Have you tried the 15 limited?

Good luck,
Cameron
