My k20d with Katzeye review (With Pictures!)

To aid in manual focusing, I definitely found the Katzeye to be extremely helpful. However, it did not remedy the weak autofocus of the Pentax system (of the past). I permanently fixed the weak autofocus mechanism by switching to Nikon a few years ago. Now with the K-5, the system has comparable autofocus performance to Nikon. Canon, on the other hand, is now struggling with their aging autofocus system.

Ricoh "will plug a gap in the market" in 2012

Yep, I moved to the Nikon D700, but I am a diehard Pentaxian, which is why I am still lurking here. But a big body is not what I want anymore. I have a Nikon system for that. A nice small body with all the reliability of a full-size DSLR that I can take on vacations so that my carry-on is not as heavy as my full-sized check-in luggage.

Ricoh "will plug a gap in the market" in 2012

Let's say that there is a glimmer of hope and the "gap" that Ricoh refers to is one that is in the photography market, rather than their own product-line gap. It would be awesome if it was a mirrorless FF and/or crop with new lenses that are the size that rangefinder lenses were. Ultrawide-angle lenses wouldn't have fisheye effect anymore and ultra-telephotos are also possible (i.e., >300mm). At the same time, it would be backwards compatible with all the k-mount SLR lenses.

It all depends on what "the company" stands for: a) Ricoh, b) Pentax, or c) Ricoh-Pentax.

Source: Ricoh eyes growth with camera push - Marketing news - Marketing magazine

What does this mean?
  • Full frame Pentax/Ricoh body? Full frame is not a gap in the market with Canon and Nikon all having FF bodies for years.

  • Full frame mirrorless body? Not really a gap, unless talking about "affordable" full-frame mirrorless?

  • Some absurd, non-existent gap drawn up by sales/marketing such as between the Pentax Q or the Nikon 1?

  • High-end Ricoh P&S's?

Huh? Are we talking about the same thing here? This is not a software to manipulate images or give it special effects. This is a technology that captures light differently from the traditional camera.

Pentax's primary logo is red, so red is best as default.

New trend, or lazy wedding pro?

The latest trend I'm seeing locally is "your wedding photos delivered to you on DVD by the end of the reception." Seems like a good idea that many photogs are bringing laptops to weddings to compete with this new threat.

Waaa?

Item Description
Bought this lens because I thought I needed a macro lens. 2 outings later and the lens never came out of the camera bag. Macro photography is not for me and now I'm switching over to Nikon.

The lens is in mint condition as it has only been taken out twice. There are no scratches, dents, or sticky barrel. It's as close to new as you can get.

That's not bad of a starting point. In reality, there's a more scientific/numeric basis for these numbers based on sensitivity of light.

I agree with Ash. If this was lit from the top left, you'd get some interesting shadows including the bowl and spoon on the table.

Personally, I've been more impressed with Smugmug. I think it looks more professional and I know lots of wedding photographers that use Smugmug.

I think they all work in the end.

Here in Edmonton, whenever you post a Craiglist request to be an apprentice, you get tonnes of photographers discouraging you. I think it is mainly because they don't want more competition. So you literally get no help at all.

The other option is be a wedding crasher and build your portfolio that way. Another technique I've seen used is to do weddings for free (as a second hired-for-free photographer), but the customer would have to "buy" photos from you. So if you suck, they won't buy anything. If you are good, they buy a lot! :)

Build an online portfolio. Show people what you can do, and then they might ignore your gear. Some customers ask to see the photographer's gear, but for my wedding, I asked to see his portfolio. My photographer is fully booked, and he dumps any client that asks to see his gear. To be honest, his setup looked pretty ghetto, but his pictures showcase his talents.

When I was planning to go pro, I decided "crash" popular churches where weddings were held. If you dress nicely, nobody will stop you as you enter the hall with nice gear. Snap some pics and post it on your portfolio. You do whatever it takes...

I apologize if this is bad advice, but this was the only way I knew to prove my worth. I still don't do it professionally, but I have been asked...

Usually you don't have to reformat the card. But then again, I usually format all my cards as soon as they are removed from the package.

Enjoy your new firmware. :)

Sounds like you know what you're doing. It looks like your camera is not picking up the firmware image on startup, or that the MENU button is not switching the system to update mode.

I think you should call Pentax if you really want to get this firmware installed.

There should be no folders or files on your memory card when doing the firmware upgrade. The only file that is allowed to be on your memory card is this file: Fwdc206b.bin

Can you check that and make sure?

I have both the 285HV and the Metz 48. I think the 48 will be easier to start on as a newbie. The 285 is fully manual, though it does have an auto-mode that I dare not use. LOL

Personally, I love the look of the white one. But mated with a black lens, it look like the camera was primed, but never painted. Also, I don't know what is the base plastic color of the camera. When you scratch it, do you see black plastic? If you do, that would look nasty as the camera ages and goes through the abuse of everyday use.

I got the black...
