Will You Be An "Early Adopter" of the Pentax Full Frame?

Preface/my story.... I'm an admitted "gadget junky." I started as an ex-freelancer after leaving the service as a combat photo guy (601st Photo Flt., Thailand-Vietnam '66-'70), I only started using my circa 1970s Pentax lenses around 2009 when I bought a used ist body. I then upgraded to a K10, and again, in 2013 to the K5iis. In late 2013, I had just returned from Brasil (family visit and coffee trip), and shortly after my return, "finally gave in" to buying the K5iis body. I was one of the last to pay a slightly reduced price. Shortly thereafter the K3 came out. My K5iis is OK. The only issue is "ME", as I just haven't had time to really deep-learn the camera. I've always believed a truly competent photographer is an artist. And if really great, can create incredible images with just about anything. I've used the K5iis for family events, sports, and various special events. Now, ironically, two years later I'm considering grabbing a K3ii at the slightly reduced price. But I'm also wanting to see the price of the FF, and the then-adjusted price of the K3ii. I'm guessing it'll be last quarter 2015. (?) One Pentax user, in another forum, shared supporting opinions for "holding off" on the FF. I would enjoy seeing a collection of pro's and con's in one place. If anyone knows of such a post... I'd appreciate the share. I just got back to this forum today after a very long absence. So I'll do a little more searching, but didn't want to re-invent the wheel. I'll monitor this post. Thanks from SoCal.

Is the K-5II getting discounted?

Gabriel... tudo bem? I just returned from one month visiting family in Brasilia, Goiana and Uberlandia. We spent 11 days in Bahia... (my first trip to Bahia in 30 years! ....). BTW, stay away from the "Dende!" This was the first time I ever had "colica" in over 30 years from anything I've eaten in Brasil. But I guess I met my match! The reason I responded is that while I was in Brasil, I continued to hear rumors about the K3, but when I got home in mid-September, it still hadn't come out. In mid October I paid $899 US for the K5 iiS, plus $19 for the extended warranty. Coming from the K10d, it was a huge improvement. And I knew it would be discounted greatly once the K3 hit, but I had a small photo job in Salt Lake City, and wanted the newer body. I'm still happy I bought it. I would guess that it will drop to what I've just read in another reply, which is low to mid $700's US. Maybe in a year it'll be $500 to $600? I'm now going to learn this body and will probably wait for the model beyond the K3... maybe K1 with a full frame sensor? I would guess you'd be wanting someone here stateside to get one for you and bring it back? Or maybe you'll have the ability to go to Miami? We saw the air fares for RT to Brasil have risen with the upcoming world events. So unless you have a lot of money put aside, you may have to wait? Prices in Brasil, over the years, have dropped a bit. But photo equipment is still expensive in the retail stores. When I was in Brasilia we stopped at Extra and one of the larger Home Builder/Hardware Stores, and I was appalled at the high prices on retail consumer electronics and tools. (almost x2 what we're paying) But it's always been like that. I just thought with the drop in the value of the $US your prices would also drop a bit more. Anyway, good luck in whatever you decide to do. ate' logo, Al

I just received my K5 iiS a few weeks ago. I suspected I'd see the K3 hit, but not this soon. Anyone want a K5 iiS barely out of the box? I paid $900, and see the sale price at B&H now is $1300. I'd pay the difference, with a slight ding on my K5 iiS if there were a buyer. Maybe I need to prepare a Pentax Forum and/or Ebay ad?

Adam... well, I'd agree that with many retail electronics/tech mfg's, giving out release dates on "upgraded" gear is just not something marketing wants to do, for the obvious reasons (sales). My greatest concern was "price point." I was going to buy the body before leaving for Brasil last month, and put it off. We just got home, and I've got some application photos to take on my more recent project work in Salt Lake City, and just didn't want to use the K10d again. I've been lucky that my shots are usually used in small publication inserts. So resolution hasn't been an issue. Bottom line, I won't feel bad at all if the new body is FF and $2k. I will think twice if it hits the market at a $1.4k price point. If the price point drops enough, I'd certainly consider trading/selling the K5 iiS and getting the upgrade. If this were a Honda dealer, and we were looking at the Accord...... there'd be an "end of the year" clearance deal waiting for us. Unfortunately, and obviously, these cameras don't come with a 10 year/100,000 mile warranty and free floor mats! :-)

Before ordering my K5 iiS on Thursday, I simply called Pentax CS and explained that I was ready to purchase the K5 iiS, and didn't want to get caught with a new body that was outdated upon arrival. Bottom line, I asked if there was anything from Japan telling them of a new body being released. The answer was "no", and they too have been subjected to the rumor mill. I received my K5 iiS today, Saturday, via Great Lakes Camera and Amazon. The thought is that if another body is to appear, it will be early 2014. If a full frame camera hits the market earlier, my thought is that it'll be in the $1800 to $2200 range. I just paid $899 with no tax. I felt comfortable in my decision.

Which aftermarket battery for K20d?

I just emailed for a "return goods authorization" from Tmart, a vendor of Chinese BP-LI50 knockoffs. I'm usually lucky with aftermarket batteries, but not this last purchase through Amazon or Ebay... honestly can't remember where they put their website?

FYI... and you guys may well know this (?) Jeryst said, "I've noticed that there are varying voltage specifications for these batteries........" Unless I'm missing something here, what you may be referring to is not the voltage rating, but the "ampere hour rating." The LI50 seems to be marketed as having as high as 1800 mAh to as low as 1400 mAh capacity. (there are 1000 mA in 1 amp) So in theory, they're saying that at the rated voltage, you should be able to draw nearly 2 amps in one hour from the higher rated battery. More ampere hour capacity equals more device operating time. Voltage rating should be 7.4 vdc for all of the batteries. It's the "capacity" that varies in this battery type, not the voltage.

My current concern is to know if anyone's found an aftermarket battery source that's equal or better than the OEM? I went through this when I got my K10d, and bought an extra battery for $15 or so, and it just died after a couple years. The OEM battery is still good. One thing I've noticed is that the OEM battery has gold contacts. The aftermarket batteries are all silver-toned.

I just went back into Amazon, and found the following battery, which is labeled as having a 2000 mAh capacity, which is relatively high. The one review it got supported a long duty cycle. I may just haul off and get it, but will look for any additional suggestions over what I've seen in this thread. (I saw battery type, but not vendor recommendations.) (?)

Pentax Dli90 or third-party battery?

After procrastinating since buying my K10D late last year, I just ordered a backup battery from my favorite online vendor, Amazom.com I've got a "Prime" account, which allows me no-charge shipping on any item that qualifies within the amazon site. So, for about $13, I'm getting a BP-L150. If it performs well, I'll probably order another. I also have large capacity battery paks that can supply any of my cameras. But honestly, I don't need much more than what a fully charged internal battery can supply. And since buying the K10 late last year, I've never run out of battery power in the field. Nice thing about Amazon is that they stand behind any purchase. I believe this particular battery has a 1-year warranty. So for $13, and free shipping, I'll take my chances on getting at least one year of service.

As on Amazon.com: DIGITAL CONCEPTS BP-L150 Digital Camera Replacement Battery for Pentax K10D

I've been using Raw+ since recently purchasing the K10D. What a great feature. With an 8 gig card, memory capacity isn't even a remote issue anymore, and I've got instant jpg "proofs" to quickly look at, resize for emails and other applications. I haven't used the braketing, but have used the exposure adjustment manually, as I experiment with subject lighting.

Well... I appreciate the input guys. BTW, I got a pretty quick call-back from the "authorized" Pentax repair facility in Chandler, AZ. There's one gal there, Kathy, that handles all of the Pentax repairs. She knew about the Best Buy refurb's, but knowing as in you have 90 days from purchase "PLUS" (and this may not be publicly dispursed)..... another 30 day grace period to report and ship your refurb'd camera. As for my camera, it's been operating flawlessly with my SMC-M vintage manual lenses, and as of Monday when I got my new 16-45mm f4 from Canada, working just great as for auto-focusing. My brother joined me today, and we drove to George's Camera in San Diego, a traditional family run store, and a Promaster dealer. I picked up a 67mm UV filter for the lens, and a new Pentax DSLR compatible flash module for my Promaster 5750DX flash. I've been shooting numerous frames of everything around the house, including the family, and everything is working swell. I still don't know, anymore than you guys, how to know what happened, or how much "refurb'ing" was done to my camera or anyone elses. In some retail industries, the retailers are allowed a certain percentage or allowance for returning purchased inventory. I can only guess that these units are sent to Pentax, who forwards them to a repair center, and then sells them back to select retailers as "refurb's." This program, in other retail lines, is sometimes handled by a seperate sales group, but in all cases, and because of a limited and unpredictable number of units and models, they are usually key retail accounts who get these units. I have to believe that the buyer at Best Buy has a Pentax rep. contact, with whom he, or she, works on these orders. My next trip to the greater Phoenix area, I'll be visiting the repair facility, and will see what I can find out. I going to agree with "germar", when he said that, "You put downs yer money, and you take yer chances!" I will guess I'm one of the many lucky ones.

BTW "Germar"..... don't take your camera into Chuy's on Barton Springs! Accidental gobs of Chuy's salsa on the lens, or on the camera body can cause delicious, but mortal damage! If you do, go behind Chuy's to our family's printing company, and ask my cousin Scott for a clean shop towel to wipe it off.... but as good as their food is over there, I'd recommend you start licking it off immediately, then follow with the shop towel! Just sharin' helpful info is all, Al

Maybe we were both lucky. I called Pentax, and their customer service rep didn't have any details on refurb'd cameras, as he believed it was handled by "dealer sales." I asked about the warranty on same, and he referred me to Pentax repair in Chandler, AZ. I called Pentax repair, spoke to a young lady who referred me to a Pentax specialist at their facility. On transfering to her phone, I left a message. I still don't know what constitutes refurb'd, and since Best Buy said that the 90 day parts and labor is handled "through the manufacturer", I want to both verify the steps I need to take for a repair....... not that I'm looking forward to it..... and also would like to find out if there's an aftermarket extended warranty available?

On January 10th 2010, I bought a K10D "refurbished" from Best Buy online. And I should start by saying I'm very pleased with the camera. The price was in the mid-$300's, and competitive to Ebay asking prices. I really felt it would be better to get a unit that was inspected, so to speak, over a used body from a stranger. In addition, BB has a 14 day no-questions return policy and a 90 day warranty. So overall, a good deal.

The camera arrived on time, and was, for all intents and purposes, a new camera, packed in the OEM box, with all the cables, software, batteries, manual, etc., that you would get if purchased new. It didn't have one fingerprint either. In fact, even when I started shooting, I noticed that the frame count on the pictures had a 001 start. (it could've been reset, but I really couldn't tell.) So again, it was like getting a brand new camera. I'll presume it may have been an "open box" return, or maybe a store return for damaged packaging?

My question to the group is...... does anyone know in more detail what constitutes a refurbished K10D, or any model, from Best Buy? Have any of you purchased one, and received it in less than the new condition that I did?

Steve...... what is Camera Expo? A store or Flea Market? And per jimH's add about Photographic Formulary, I'll check it out. With internet, I think we all key into our final net billing, which includes shipping and taxes. I went into Freestyle's website, and saw various brands of deleloper, with what may be their private label brand being pretty cheap. I used to buy concentrates and mix my own chemicals. As for the enlargers, the prices I saw in Ebay were not that low. I'm thinking Craig's List or "free to the first person here..." ads, may be the answer to those "giveaway darkrooms" you guys are referring to. And Steve.... I have a niece living in La Verne..... I'm OK with LaVernians! (smile) I really miss living in the area, but for the fact that I was in the Pomona Valley from 1970 thru '05, and the familiarity of knowing where everything is. However..... I must say that we have absolutely no pollution down here in South OC. Although, when I'm driving up North on a business trip, or to Vegas, there's another 35 minutes to an hour of extra driving just to cross L.A. County.

Well guys.... I'll test your observations this AM. When I was at Samy's, they only had one small gondola area for chemicals, and only a few bottles of fixer, developer, etc., spread out on what most would consider a near empty shelf. I remember buying fixer and developer in bulk gallons, and for under $5..... which makes it really tough when I see a gallon of fixer, or maybe concentrate (?), for $32?! (I've gotta' look again...) I'm quite sure there are better buys online. As for the enlargers, and me being in the graphics industry for the last many years, I've seen darkrooms disappear in all companies. I'll never forget, back in the mid 1990's, going to a General Dynamics asset auction, and seeing a huge "locomotive sized" horizontal litho camera being auctioned off for $100. Today, you'd have to pay to get it taken out of your work space. I never thought to look for enlargers, although I saw a decent variety of print papers on Samy's shelf. But if it's home film and print processing, the best supplier in SoCal has always been Freestyle Photo in Hollywood, just off the 101 freeway. They used to sell bulk films, papers and chemicals. Maybe a trip over there would be in order?

So far as the pure image is concerned, little squares (pixels) of image color still can't compete with continuous contrast imaging on film. And as the gal at Samy's reminded me indirectly..... you can see and "feel" the difference with your eyes! Maybe someday pixels will disappear, and digital imaging will become a robotic human eye? But for now, I'm thinking of maybe investing in a small Patterson processing tank, developer and fixer...... and doing my own black and white film. That's how I started years ago. Only problem is printing! I'm almost afraid to see prices from labs for black and white enlargements!? And I don't have the inclination to start up a darkroom, and even worse, re-buy my Durst enlarger for 10 times what I paid in 1972! Maybe I'll just upgrade my Pentax body? :-o

Just last week, I'd almost given up interest in my old 645, until I visited Samy's Camera, Santa Ana, CA, and after chatting with the gal in the film and processing department, found out she dumped her digital stuff and bought a 645. She gave me a complimentary roll of B&W, to coax me into shooting what I've been storing for so long.

Steve, I'll see your "bevy of bodies..." and up the anty with my 500mm f8, catadioptric astrological lens! (smile) Nice meeting you Steve..... I lived in Claremont, CA for over 30 years, and was a family friend of Sam Del Cioppo, from the late great Claremont Camera. We should chat.......?

Your quest was my need last year. I wanted to photograph the San Francisco Giants, AT&T Park Hall of Fame plaques that are mounted on the stadium wall along King Street. (that was one of my design and sales project last year, along with the SF 49'ers Hall of Fame) At the time, I was shooting application photos of my major projects with my Oly E20N, and a Promaster 5750DX with a soft diffusion head on the strobe. I found the following company here in SoCal, and drove over, and for about $350, got a complete portable strobe/soft box system; three complete heads, diffusers, tripods, and all hardware...totally ready for the job. Being electronics type, I found a way to power all the heads from a 12vdc auto jump-start unit, running a 300 watt inverter. Here's the website of the company: britekinc.com And yes, this is "cheap Chinese faux-Normans", and I know that some will say that you should do it right and get real Norman's or Alien Bees, but I "bought for the job", so to speak. It's like buying low-end tools just for one job... any usage beyond the job that paid for them, is a gift. Just sharin' is all. This is a step above using spare flash units, but for me, it's a very portable light source. I use the individual units for all sorts of special lighting. I might have lucked out, as they work great, and although they're low power heads, they're perfect for my close, flat-field photos of our product. BTW.... each strobe head comes with a built-in slave sensor, so I used my Promaster to trigger the other three.

I've read the literature on the K10d and the Promaster 5750 flash.... and the Promaster PX adapter module. But bottom line, do any of you now shoot, or have you shot this setup with manual lenses AND the newer digital compatible lenses?

Since getting the ist-D, and recently getting the K10d, I just bought a 16-45mm f4, and want to have a comfortable "event" or all-around flash setup, using the Promaster flash and the new lens. I've yet to use either body with a "digital compatible" lens, and am looking forward to receiving the lens. (Prodigital2000)

I'll certainly contact Pentax support, (they've been very helpful), and will email Promaster. But there's nothing like "OJT", or "On-The-Job-Training"... to get the inside skinny. Maybe I'm one of only a few, if any on the forum, that uses the Promaster?

Alexandre, Oi... Também um prazer conhecê-lo. My wife's immediate family lives in Brasilia, Anapolis, Goiania and Uberlandia. We've been married for many years, Agradeço a Deus, and go back to Brasil regularly. I started with an ist-D just a few months ago, and only last week bought a new-refurbished K10d. The camera was actually brand new, but I think the box was opened, and the store took it back, but had to sell it as refurbished. Regardless, I got back into Pentax-landia because I bought a Pentax system back in the mid 1970's. I still have my Pentax MX body, and of course, an inventory of SMC-M lenses. And that's why I got the ist-D..... to dust off the lenses and see if I could work the magic again. I had been using my Olympus E20n, which I still have and use. I also just bought today, the Pentax 16-45mm f4 zoom. I got it from Prodigital2000 on Ebay. I'm anxious to try all the automatic features of the new digital body, as the M-lenses force us to set aperature and shutter "the old way." So, I see you're in the South. We live in South Orange County, CA, and have a large group of Brasilian and Argentinean friends, along with some family that also live nearby. In fact, tomorrow, we're going Tia Dalva's to bake hosca! Assim, se você quer alguma hosca e cafezinho, deixe-me saber! I'll look forward to hearing from you. Ciao! Al

Hello and welcome Clark..... I've been putzing around the garage most of the day, going from my espresso bar to my camera area. My two brothers and I were and still are photo-hounds. I'm an ex-USAF combat photo type from the Vietnam era. (www.601st.com) I started doing part time event and commercial work when I returned to college in '70. My first "100 lbs." of camera crap to lug around was the Kowa 6, which I bought from Frank's Highland Park Camera. That was THE camera shop in SoCal during the 70's. I finally sold my Kowa system, which had grown to 3 bodies and many lenses, and think I then bought the Pentax MX, with a small grouping of SMC-M lenses, which only a couple months ago I put back into service with a used ist-D I bought from a forum member... and just recently a K10d I bought. If you'd like private-message me and maybe we can exchange some info. My oldest brother gave me his medium format Mamiya 645-1000s system... he thinks to sell, but I'm wondering if there's a market for it? I've check, and I think his lenses are going to garner more than the body? He even has a 500mm catadioptic astrological lense. I'm not far from you, and we have an aunt in So.Pas. that we're going to visit tomorrow, Sunday. I'm out that way often. Best, Al

I just read your comments on lense prices being lower a year or two back... but even with that, when I scanned all the available offerings for the 16-45mm f4, and considering that a new lense, FOB anywhere in the continental US, is only $310, the "used" prices on Ebay, (assuming these lenses are at least a year or two, if not older), didn't really make much sense? Unless I'm missing something, saving maybe $50-$60 on a used lense, without any warranty, didn't support the sale. And from my other reply, I'm still wondering what the purchasing conditions are to meet the rebate? Usually here in the US, national rebates are just that; available to US residents only.

Well, even without all the details, NOW you got me thinking I bought too early? I just hauled off and bought the 16-45mm f4 zoom for my K10d through prodigital2000 in Eastern Canada. The "buy now" price on Ebay is $310 US, and that's FOB my destination here in SoCal. So now, I'm wondering if Pentax is giving that $50 kickback only to Canadian residents, or a US resident that purchased "from a Canadian vendor?"

BTW... I Googled the net and searched this forum for anything I could read that would bolster my confidence in buying this lense. All I have for lense inventory now are my SMC-M lenses; 15mm-3.5, 28mm-2.8, 50mm-1.7, 100mm+macro 4.0, and a Vivitar Auto Zoom 100-300mm + close focus 5.0 Yes, they're all great hunks'a glass, but I'm wondering how they fare up against the newer digital-compatible lenses?

Because I've never been able to experience the many auto-functions of either the ist-D that I just sold, or this new K10d, I figured I'd get just one "all-around" wide to portrait. My only concession on the 16-45mm was the very short portrait focal length. I should probably start another thread for comments on the 16-45mm and 16-50mm. I am wondering how long it'll be before I make the next jump to the K20d? I've always said that being able to eeck out 80% of everything an older model can do, is better than only using 50% utility of next model up. That's my rationalization for not buying the K20d right now... or going a bit further?
