How do you figure? It seems to have the same level of productivity.. which is no productivity. Because we're collectively just arguing subjective, personal opinion. It is no different than arguing blue is better than red.

4k video would be nice though.. if only for cropping or panning.. get those long, Ken Burns style documentary pans. :p

Ricoh doesn't appear to have briefcases of money for 3rd parties. Actually, they'd prefer to design and retail lenses themselves and license them to 3rd parties. Case in point: the Tokina 50 f/1.4

So I am not expecting Ricoh to fill the gaps with 3rd party, rather my desire all along is for 3rd parties to simply be interested in selling to K mount customers without Ricoh involvement. But, as I said, I think they were a year or two too late (with KAF4) as the market shrank and is now turning another direction (mirrorless).

Outside of support for lenses they already offer in K, I think they're already dropped from Sigma a couple of years ago. Now they being in a big alliance for another mount just seals it imo. Same article, the Sigma rep also states SA mount is still going to be supported (at least in the near term) with new lenses. So I don't see any room for new K.

I think KAF4 came too late. A year or two sooner and we might have seen a bit more traction from them.. though I am still kind of surprised there aren't more 'holes' being filled by 3rd parties with the FF lineup. 24-105 f/4, 70-200 f/4, newer 70-300 and/or 100-400, f/1.8 primes, wide angle primes.. etc.. there are a lot of openings for 3rd parties to enter. Sales must be super slow compared to other manufacturers for them to balk at the thought..

That was one of my fav of the photos. Wonderful colors and bokeh balls with focus on the church/cathedral bell tower. That's nice.

He explains what he was doing though right above the very photo: "Bokeh is round and beautiful and exactly what you would expect from a premium f/1.4 lens."

Why do we tear down people's photos so hastily?

This is very nice. I use Flashpoint (Godox) flashes on my other branded camera and they are really nice and reliable thus far, imo better than the other 3rd party flashes out there. This is a welcome addition for Pentax.

1.4 million dollars for that.. intact or not.... incredible. Watching the faces of the people at the auction was interesting in the video of it occurring.

I saw some report of it yesterday that claimed it may now be worth more damaged than it was intact. haha. I don't understand art culture that spends money on this stuff... there's easily a thousand artists actually on the streets that make more thought provoking and beautiful art than this guy. Of course that's subjective.. but at this point I think hes a brand name and people are buying just on that name. He could throw a loaded paintbrush at a wall and frame it and people would claim it speaks to them.

I hope you get the camera you've been waiting for very long to receive! A hybrid viewfinder with more focusing aids and the ability to use CDAF to micro adjust lenses for PDAF would be super. You'd get some of the niceties of mirrorless ilcs without having to switch mounts.

I really do hope they update the DA* zooms and some of the cheaper primes that are still on screwdrive sooner than later though. They seem so antiquated today...

How do you deal with people looks?

I usually get people yelling stuff at me from their cars or honking their horn as they get on me to see my flinch as I'm venturing down the sidewalk, minding my own business, with camera in hand.

It is always low education/low income folk. So I think it may be an issue of thinking the 'big' camera means wealth and/or it looks intimidating to them so they have to attack to not feel threatened.

I even had one woman ask me what newspaper I was with when I was out with my K-5II at a car show. She kind of had a confused look when I said I wasn't with a paper and taking photographs was my hobby.

I had another woman, from the comfort of her beat up pickup truck, yell something about kids in the park and I shouldn't be here as she literally spun her tires in an aggressive display as I was casually taking photographs of flowers in a park with a macro lens, not even facing some kids, that I think she was referring to, which were behind a wall of bushes in the distance anyways out of view.

Another dude back a few cars stopped at a traffic light leaned out of his beater his embarrassed wife (she kept looking straight ahead, pretending the event wasn't happening)was driving, dude starts harassing me to take his pick 'take muh picshure maine, cmon take my picshure, take my picshure, you gone take my picshure, take my picshure, etc etc' Figuring that would resolve the issue, I snapped a picture of him. But he was like a robot stuck in a loop, still asking me to take his picture until the light changed and his wife got him out of there.

Lots of little oddities like that, those are just a few of the many... people get scared, people fear, and they respond sometimes to make themselves feel less fearful or to attack the 'monster' I think.

Oddly while out in public, the police have never approached me even though I know they've seen me. It is the public that have the issues.

Another bump.. another small price reduction.

After this sells I might sell the rest of my stuff remaining.. DA35, DA50, and a couple flashes (a 360 and a 540FGZ) but would need to sell the camera kit first.

I do wonder if every new lens Ricoh launches in K mount is going to take up to 2 years like the 50mm seemingly took? One can hope that the 50 was their lens to cut their teeth on in terms of design, testing, and production that the others on the roadmap will come out much quicker..

What I think would be neat is a modular GR. Left or Right hand grips as well as a grip somehow containing an EVF (for those that want it). If the 'core of the camera was just a cube consisting of sensor, lens, and processor then everything around it could be modularized.

I think you're just really in the Pentax camp and it can be easy to get a bit overly sensitive and thus defensive on some of these things. A lot of those sentiments, I think, should be checked at the door once we enter the Non-pentax cameras section.

Yet a healthy community isn't one that just allows one PoV to be aired without being challenged. Just remember that there are people equally annoyed with your PoV as you are with theirs. And no one's opinion has more value than the others. We're all equal.

I don't think it would be wise to simply tell those who are unhappy with Pentax's current trajectory to get lost... this place would be really really quiet (and boring). If you really think this place matters to the well being of Pentax somehow, I'm thinking a quiet forum would bring a poor sight to newcomers. And this place always needs antagonists it seems... a revolving cast of pinatas to beat on.

haha now that's a rather Pentax-specific view!

Canon product buyers are simply buying overpriced neck straps, for the marketing, and the inventory at the big box retailer while Pentax product buyers buy high-performance cameras. Got it! I suspect the Canon product owners would likely disagree with you on this depiction.. :p

Though what I think you're trying to say is basically, Canon user base is giant and thus with a budget, development plan and cycle, and marketing that fits being 'giant.' Pentax user base is dinky and thus with a budget, development plan and cycle, and marketing that fits being 'dinky.' And neither has any desire to change their status in the market.

I do agree with the internet helping these brands... it is along the lines of my word-of-mouth comment that the mod found so hysterical. One doesn't see Pentax in stores, even ones that sell Pentax, too frequently. Nor do we likely see people out shooting with Pentax gear too regularly. Personally in 8 years of looking, I've yet to see another Pentax camera in the wild (beyond my own). You either know someone directly who tells you about Pentax or discover them online from someone (be it review, online store that actually carries them, or forum discussion).

You're likely not going to see advertising like this:

For Ricoh or Pentax.... they're too small too care about that level of marketing. But it also concerns me because businesses rarely stay even with customers long term... and if you're not actively growing the brand you're inherently killing the brand slowly.

No, for those quick to attack that's not what you call "doooom".. but I cannot see how Ricoh expect Pentax to stay afloat if they aren't even slightly growing the numbers and doing that through continually innovating and appealing to photographers who still shoot with them as well as attracting some new customers.

It is simplified but think of caloric intake and weight. More calories in than expended and your weight goes up. Less calories in than expended and your weight goes down. We cannot starve the body and expect to remain healthy for too long before parts of the body revolt. If they want to remain the same weight, they need to maintain a balanced diet on steady calories and caloric expense. haha. I enjoy analogies.. and I'm hungry.

Laugh all you want. It is how I learned Pentax even existed 8 years ago. And I sold that first Pentax DSLR to someone else who had never heard of the brand either (same age as I). She bought the camera from me simply because she saw enough of my work with it to see 'it' could take 'nice pictures.' If you weren't around 40 years ago when Pentax was popular, you just wouldn't know of them. Different PoV in different shoes.

When a company offers minimal advertising and has little-to-no in store presence then you're probably not going to hear about the brand from the company owning the brand.

That's a painful jab, a bit crude, and not so tactful, but I'd say largely accurate...

I don't think we need hive mindedness here though so "negative" or not, I would hope you don't change your view due to peer pressure... And especially in the Non-Pentax Cameras section where such honest thoughts should be freely allowed.

However, yes, Canon ate their lunch in the 80s and 90s it seems.. they marketed so much better while Pentax seems to have loitered around a bit. Canon are still highly adept at marketing today. I was watching a yt vid for something totally unrelated recently and even there the guy in the clip was thanking Canon for sponsoring or offering gear (I forget which I was pretty shocked he was thanking Canon)..

Pentax is now a word-of-mouth brand. That might appeal to some, but it concerns and frustrates me. But even at time the K-5 was launched, it was ahead of most of the competition and it still is a solid camera today (well minus the AF). Then the brand got bruised and beaten through an exchange of sales at the time the market began to shrink, and is now not the brand they once were.

Hopefully they are turning the corner now and the crop system will get a serious refresh while D-FAs start arriving more plentiful too... because I, and I think a lot of us who say things honestly but are deemed 'negative' by the diehard brand fans, really want the brand to thrive as much as they do. I don't know about you, surfar, but I realistically don't expect Canon or Nikon sized marketshare for Pentax yet even in their own lane think Ricoh can do a lot better job of building and even growing the Pentax brand. Hopefully that is happening, or soon to be happening rather, now.
