Those are very nice. I saw that Aurora fly over us a short while ago. You got a better shot than I did.

Colors are nice, no washout look against the sky.

Agreed. Higher iso can in some very narrow circumstances give you good results, but they are rare.

I had two almost identical, one at iso 2500 which was a bit soft from low shutter speed. As usual cropped with minor post processing.

Iso in actual photos doesn't seem to be linear. The composition of the photo, the dynamic range, the variety of colors, the contrast and detail all have an effect. And any given body will have corner cases where it is worse.

I'm going to do the upgrade mostly for AF improvements, and to be able to take advantage of what I predict will be upgrades in firmware. If I gain a bit of color and less noise in some situation I'll be happy.

The reason you don't want to write to the dng file is that you risk losing the image file if there is an error.

Low-Light Low light and action/nature photography in dark woods ... Flash use ?

The whole thing is rather obtrusive and heavy. But it allows shots that can't be gotten otherwise. I used a metz for a while but got nervous when it got wet.

It is difficult to get good results. I kept the iso low; 400 max because at higher iso's the quality went down hill quickly when cropping. This was 500mm, and I could illuminate 30-40ft out and get something.

You quickly learn flash usage. I found that manually setting the flash power was the best way; auto exposure didn't give good results. It is really easy to overexpose which in a busy bushy scene turns into a busy mess.

I have the Harbor Digital flash extender, the Pentax 540 flash. A couple things. Get the flash as far away from the axis of the lens to get rid of awful eyes. Use the flash speed to freeze movement; 1/4 is pretty quick. A few shots and one of the equipment. This is the K3. Exposure is trial an error; distance and light. Lots of things to go wrong; hot spots and over exposure for example. I got some decent shots on days and situations where it was impossible otherwise. Get used to changing the flash settings manually.

I haven't used it since getting the K1.

I don't know about you, but it takes me quite a while to master a new body, to get to know when it does really well and when it doesn't. Any review I read is approached with this in mind; how long did the photographer use it, what shooting circumstances, etc. Even ISO performance is non linear.

But it creates controversy and noise.

The seeming difficulty in getting a very clear answer what and where are the purported deterioration in quality due to the variety of post processing chains has made me think that this is overblown.

There are likely corner cases where it becomes an issue. Every body/sensor combination has corner cases, as well lenses. Every body that I have bought has require me to adjust my post processing, and find the different limits. It takes me a year because each season presents different lighting situations.

So where are they with the mark II? I intend to find out. I expect more in focus shots, better color in the difficult conditions that I find myself in, and less of the type of noise that is difficult to remove.

I was shooting the other day with my K1 and wishing I had the layering function.

Each to his own. Don't trust a review that can't get the test shots in focus.

K-1 MK2 - Unhappy with results at moderate ISO settings

So what happens to make the same chip produce higher iso? Iso is essentially amplifying the signal. Amplification makes flaws worse.

There is something going on in that chip.

And I wouldn't disregard the values of dsp. Audio engineers have worked for decades to produce a microphone that reflects what we hear with our ears reliably in almost any environment including noise, wind, high volumes, feedback etc.

I suspect the results will be similar to what I experience with the K1. Some situations are amazingly clean at high isos, others are awful at lower isos. I'm expecting the K1 II to be awful in some situations and amazing in others. I intend to find out.

So slightly better iso performance and better autofocus.

Iso and noise is non linear, so any improvements will be in corner cases.

Varied Thrush. I didn't realize it was iso 6400 until processing. The second is iso 2500. The higher shutter speed on the first shot, even at high iso, is sharper.

Pentax K-1 Mark II Early Reviews?

I'm curious what you are seeing and why. I've noticed that iso performance is dependent on far more than simply the gain; I had an iso 6400 photo yesterday that had less noise than some iso 800 shots I have taken. I couldn't believe what I was seeing in the exif.

I guess the question is whether without the processing the image data would have been better. Any noise handling algorithms wherever they are applies are about attempting to reconstruct detail.

Thanks for posting the image. More information the better.

I made the mistake of taking some shots with the hood extended, which doesn't work at all. With it not extended it is visible.
