Aperture problem with manual lenses

The Pentax-A should work in all modes as long as the ring is set to the "A" position. The limitations are manual focus (obviously) and only center focus point can be used.

Cards not formatted message on K1

Try doing a full or overwrite format using SD Formatter on your PC or Mac.

SD Memory Card Formatter - SD Association

An in camera format will just do a quick format which just re-writes a blank copy of the file tables and will not detect corruption in the actual data sectors. Or the cards could be going bad.

One of the Japanese blogs that JPT or OokU linked to the Ricoh engineers said that the accelerator chip is tuned for each ISO setting. It's not a flat setting that just kicks in at some point.

Does it really matter? The specifications page says the K-1 conforms to USH-1 standards. No promise of speed. As long as it conforms to the minimum speed for USH-1 then it is up to standards.

Aperture problem with manual lenses

First "use aperture ring" must be enabled in the settings.

Then, lenses not set on "A" or without contacts will only stop down in Manual mode when the exposure is taken or the green button is pressed to stop-down meter or when the optical DOF preview is operated. With the K-3II in manual mode when you operate the optical DOF the iris will stop down to the setting on the aperture ring and the exposure bar can be used as meter readings - adjust shutter speed with the eDial and f-stop with the aperture ring.

All other modes except X and B will default to Av and meter and shoot wide open.

Sounds like the same symptoms as with the Pentax-A SMC 50mm f/1.7 when the retainer for one or both of the leaf springs breaks for the "A" button. A fairly simple fix on the "A" 50mm if one has the dexterity and patience. The F28 could be a whole different animal.

Extension Tubes

At one time I did a little research and it seemed that Jessop's was/is a distributor for Kenko and the Jessop's tubes were rebranded Kenko tubes. Might be the same deal with Glanz which are supposed to be coming from Japan. The Kenko k-mount tubes have been out of production or not sold for many years but perhaps they still sell them under different brand names.

With lenses without aperture rings you need contacts in order to control the aperture.

The problem with using deglassed TCs as extension tubes is the narrow opening. You can get vignetting with some focal length especially if you stack tubes.

My K-50 Problems.

If the oily shutters are prone on the K-50 I think we would have heard long and loudly about it on PF some time ago. Look at all posts on the creaking hand grip of the K-1 and the lens release button falling out on the K-5. Not to mention the aperture problems with the K-30/50.

Why would someone put oil in their own camera? To fix a problem I suppose. Once possible fix for the aperture problem that has been tossed around (and out) is to lubricate the solenoid that seems to be the central component in the problem.

K-mount lenses without "A" contacts only stop down in Manual Mode - when you press the green button for stop-down metering, take an exposure or operate the optical DOF preview. The lens will also stop-down in X or Bulb mode when you take an exposure or DOF preview. The green button does not work in X or Bulb mode.

See the thread linked above by paulh on how to meter using the green button in Manual mode as well as this one:

The shoulder is narrow on the adapter to allow the aperture simulator lever on those lenses so equipped to be mounted.

A thick rubber hair tie/band/holder would probably cover the openings. Buy them by the dozen and any color you want.

If you use the K-mount lenses with an adapter on a Canon Full Frame body the aperture stop down lever is likely to hit the mirror. With Canon bodies with crop (APS-C) sensors this should not be a problem. There should be no need to mutilate the K-mount lenses especially if you intend to use them on a Pentax body later.

Lonely Speck's Astrophotography tests showed no evidence of "star eating" with the K-1II. As of the time of this posting no one else has shown any evidence either.

Literally dozens of DIY blogs on how to make a ring light using the "angel eyes". Continuous lighting though. One uses a voltage booster to run off 4 AA batteries.

As far as the focus assist beam goes:

QuoteQuote:

All flashes except the Pentax AF200FG include a focus-assist beam which replaces the horrible subject-startling strobe effect Pentax built-in flashes use to provide AF assist. Additionally, Pentax and the higher-end Metz models provide a mode where the AF assist light is enabled but the flash doesn't fire — Metz calls this "spot beam".

Lenses with aperture rings work (non-A mode), Manual Mode, green button. Relegate the body to MF lenses.

Or try contacting Ricoh US. In the past they have been willing to cover the diaphragm control repair out of warranty. They'll want the camera inspected first before making a final decision. Advance Camera is an authorized service center, but not for warranty work, so there should be no problem due to prior repairs.

Ricoh US seems to be unresponsive lately to the contact form on the US website. Possibly someone screwed up the forwarding addresses. If you don't get a response try calling the toll free number listed on the warranty card or on the warranty information page of the website. It is not listed on the contact us page.

I have that problem on my K1000 with either (I don't recall) my Vivitar 285 or Sunpak 422D. The foot on the flash is a little too long in front so the center pin doesn't make contact. I could shave down the foot but I relegated the K1000 to parts so I don't care. The flashes work fine on every other body or off camera cable I have so it's not worth my time to modify the foot.

K100D lens compatibility question
Posted By Not a Number
Replies: 19

My bad, I confuse PLM with KAF4.

The K100D is only a crippled KAF mount and lacks the power zoom contacts. Manual Focus only with DC, PLM or SDM.

The K100D Super is crippled KAF2 with the power zoom contacts.

Additionally KAF4 lenses will only shoot wide open as there is no way for the camera to control the iris. No firmware update for KAF4 support.

Refer to the above link compatibility chart and http://kmp.pentaxians.eu/technology/k-mount/crippled_af/
