since the K-5 and K-7 bodies are the same - I believe this may help. The last screw is under the grip rubber, beneath the "K-5" lettering on the front of the camera. The rubber material is glued on with a double-sided adhesive tape and sticks back no problem. I peeled just the top part (about a third of the area) of the rubber piece off to get access to the screw. Weather sealing is all OK and sturdy enough as long as you don't touch it - stuff on our hands is awful for some metals and plastics... I'd advise wearing powder-free latex gloves.

Is Pentax Dead or Dying? or is there still life? No pun intended.

all these wonderful features, advantages and characteristics are no use when your 4 month old camera you received as replacement for sensor stained one you paid 999 Pounds Sterling for suddenly stops firing the shutter. and no advertising will convince me or anyone who saw my virtually new, never abused k5 dead that Hoya are not a joke when it comes to MAKING cameras. And never mind the wonderful ergonomics, design and magnesium body.

which makes me think - I could bet that a k5 innards will die of shock before the body dents but this is only advantageous for the consumer during the warranty period 'cos we can send it in and deny it was ever dropped. :)) but after that - what's the use? none. it's just a gimmick. it's like 12 megapixel sensors 1/2.33 size in PS cameras - totally useless, just a gimmick, well, and people will buy bigger flash cards, so there's some use of many megapixels in crappy cameras. But magnesium body? especially when the latch retaining the poop-up flash is plastic and so is the flash which pops up by itself... The bit that sticks out and is most likely to be caught on smth. and pulled off. plastic. they sell "weather proof" camera saying avoid getting water and mud on it in the user manual, these weatherproof cameras do not do very well in heat it seems. To be weatherproof you either have to use the shi^te kit or something very expensive and there's no middle ground. They sel a "pro" camera which seems much less reliable than their mass produced Kx of previous generation. Kx was fine for what it was and they discontinue it, introducing the improved version with what many consumers wanted - red dots in the viewfinder and focus assist beam and of course LCD bigger than 210000 pixel. Well yes, but there's still stock in shops which demonstrates frontfocusing of gargantuan proportions. Whole feet and yards out in broad daylight. I personally went through 10 (!!!) copies in SRS, UK, last year, all FF, clearly visible with maximum adjustment with kit lens on the camera VF!!!!! Quality! So what are those red dots and are they of any use?

I have used a number of Pentax DSLR. Now WTF for do we need SLR? to see what the sensor (film) would see, right? Well no. In the case of Pentax I have never held a body fresh from the shop with properly shimmed focusing screen. Why not stick a wireframe viefinder on the camera's side and screw the mirror! So where did this advantage go? I mean they keep horsesh^tting people that you can use the camera with any PK lens. No you can't. Not without having the camera properly adjusted first and having this done well under warranty - well, you can try. It's much easier to buy a set of shims and juts do tial and error, you'll have it done in half a day, not a week in repair shop. Oh. unless you libe in the US, you can't get focusing screen shims from local pentax. You'd have to buy them from KatzEye. at double the money which is ok since they cost $5 each even then. Who needs any of this knowledge when most of their gear is sold with 18-55 plug keeping the whole shut and used as a posh PS which even comes in different colours! The K5 I am sending to be repaired now has come to me with the foc. screen shim about 0.3 or 0.4 mm too thick!!!!! I know what thickness shim it takes to be very near-perfect, but I am not telling the repair shop. Let's see if they even attempt to get it sorted or just resort to their usual "it is within manufacturer's tolerances and is not therefore a fault" which drives me mad! Give those tolerances to people when they buy this lump, don't give them all this SAFOX three million plus garbage.... Etc. etc.

cameras from the 80s Compare similarly priced Pentax and Ricoh bodies. Ricoh is better. Better built, better designed. They weren't the amateur camera market leader and had to make good cameras to be able to sell them. Pentax was the market leader and was more concerned with effective advertising and gimmicks and the mass production of K1000 in China? Or was it ME/MX/MV by then? Anyway, Pentax was more concerned with things other than good engineering (you know, the plastic gear on mirror motor of MZ/ZX series) and quality assurance.

Oh dear I am so miffed with the K5/international warranty soup I am in... Hoya I heard make good lens filters. Let them make lens filters. Why are they turning the Pentax brand into a joke releasing thousands of faulty cameras of their FLAGSHIP models (yes, the mess started with late k20d and then continued with K7 before the K5 many quality issues, I believe)

Life is crap :(

Trying to cheer myself up with replacing lightseals and mucking about with some old film bodies and RF cameras I have. Shooting Kx after using K5 for some months is like drinking (even very decent) vodka when you have developed a taste for good single malts or well aged brandy de Jerez. It does the job of getting you drunk but the pleasure of the process is no longer there.

My SRS (shop that sold me the camera) guy said "replacement unlikely. repair more likely"

Well I also think since AF is really OK on this copy. So is exposure metering and P-TTL unless in the dark with fast prime. Sensor without stains. So I'd rather keep this body if the shutter/mirror problem can be properly rectified. Unless they offer me full refund :) Replacement with this model is a pig in a poke. I already had a K5 body replaced once - in February this year, and this was the lemon I got, having spent $150 on postage and waited for a month as the shop didn't have the stock. Burn Hoya, Burn!

This is why K5 is cheaper than equivalents from other brands. You have to have 2 K5s - or three - allowing for some of them spending considerable time in repair shops being puzzled over by cognitively challenged weirdos. Well, what's better - one 5d mk II or two K5s? sorry, not an option. PK lenses. No money for 2 K5s. Stuck. Just free yourself, sell the dying brand stuff to those more "loyal" to the badge.

how many shutter actuations since new mother(fff...)board? all well so far? no new faults introduced?

My frustration is that nowdays repair people don't "repair"They pretty mindlessly replace parts according to some algorithms... same in automotive repair.

OK let's replace this. Didn't work. Let's replace that. Oh, part is not in stock. Got the part two weeks later. No, not that. Let's replace that other thing. Oh, we have no equipment for that, let's send it to Japan. Camera is back 2 months later. Fixed, allegedly. No dust on the mirror and the LCD screen is polshed. One strap lug ring missing. Firmware back to version 1.0. Fault not fixed but became intermittent and you have difficulty demonstrating the fault in the shop and all seems well until your daughter's christening when the camera locks up and dies having made a flurry of weird noises mixed of the triple double single and octuple mirror slap sounds and SR going nuts. An uncle with a Benq point and shoot takes pictures of the ceremony blinding everybody with the flash and producing really ugly pictures impossible to look at without cringing. 12MP though, he bouth it last week and never hel a camera in his hands before. In the meantime you think of how you hate Hoya. Sounds familiar?

Oh, be assured I attempt no "repairs"! Just turning dials, flicking switches, performing ritual dances around this camera, that's all. It is going back to SRS and that's that. The problem is I am working in Russia at the moment and can't just pop the camera into the shop I bought it from. Now, in the city I am in the repair people authorised to do Pentax warranty repairs say "you bought it in UK, you get it fixed in UK" being quite rude about it. No amount of waving the international warranty card and all necessary receipts etc. in front of their eyes makes them do anything for me. GREAT! PENTAX, THANK YOU FOR THE GREAT WORLDWIDE WARRANTY REPAIR NETWORK. Another thing about these "specialists" - what they said when I presented them with my first defective K5 (CMOS stains, obvious to anyone who'd seen them and read about them on this forum, for instance) proved their total incompetence, I simply could not believe it... They were talking out of their ar^e, pardon my French, saying that "the signal from the sensor must be corrected by means of software" probably meaning pixel mapping. :))) THESE GUYS ARE AUTHORISED BY PENTAX OFFICIAL REPAIR GUYS IN A CITY WITH POPULATION OF2 MILLION WHERE THERE ARE US AND UK CONSULATES GENERAL! I mean it's not a remote village in the Russian North we are talking here. This is them: http://www.photocamera.ru/ Do you think after that I will let them butcher my camera even if they did take it despite it being purchased in the UK.

I expect more from the company that sold me a product spoken about as "PRO" or "semi-PRO" class for which I paid 999 Pound Sterling.

Shipping a K5 body with appropriate insurance to the UK will cost me at least $150 US and I might end up being liable to pay UK import tax (!!! great job, UK customs, rip the little guy off, what can he do? It's much easier than stopping the flood torrents of illicit drugs being brought into the country, for instance) on the blasted thing.

It is cheaper than to fly there in person to take it in, but not by that big a margin, especially taking into account the pain that the UK customs can cause if the camera travels as "goods" rather than around my neck on a plane as a "personal effect"

So the combination of the dreadful Philippines Pentax QC/QA with frighteningly incompetent repair personnel in Russia, and the lack of uniformity of warranty policies of Pentax in Russia/Ukraine and Pentax in the rest of this globe makes one look for ways to make the sh^te product you spent some good money on (plus 150 postage last time it was sent in) work without having to send it to the wonderful SRS shop in Watford where I bought it.

I wrote about this to Pentar (St. Petersburg), a company representing Pentax in Russia, the headquarters. These guys: http://www.pentar.ru I wrote about this to Pentax Europe. No reply. Here, on the Russian Pentax website: http://www.pentax.ru/service/policy/qm-show-eq-ru.htm it clearly states that warranty applies only to Pentax gear purchased in Russia and Ukraine, which is in TOTAL CONTRADICTION to what the paperwork for my camera says about repairs under warranty while being outside the UK, as in "go to any of these authorised centres to get wonderful high class friendly and fast service you'd expect from Pentax" or something along these lines, and a list of companies with addresses which includes the blasted Pentar.

Reading stuff here I see many a story about Pentax owners in the US sending their cameras back and forth to warranty repair centres BECAUSE nothing was done first time they sent it in or their gear wasn't repaired properly and the equipment was simply returned to them as if it was OK but failed again very quickly. Well that is a luxury I can't afford.

Each time a Pentax repair company forgets to do something, or does a sloppy job of fixing something in my camera in the UK it will cost me further $150 for sending it there again and cause all the non-monetary bother of sending "goods", "commodities" across state borders.

So off it goes to SRS Microsystems. Another $150 out of my pocket through NO FAULT OF MINE. Another month, at least, without a decent camera.

I guess I'll shoot more film and finally get my lovely Yashica with f1.4 Yashinon properly tested in various lighting conditions at various exposure settings.

If they manage to fix the K5 (my SRS contact said it unlikely to get replacement for this defect, only for stains :))) so as it would be able to take some shots in hands of a prospective buyer - which may be too much to wish for - I should sell it off before it packs up again. Then flog the lenses, leaving a couple for the Kx which is going to the shop too (but this is in Russia, no international worries) to get the selector wheel replaced, damn annoying. But nothing major at least. Just the crap resolution of the LCD spoils the fun of using it. Well I'll leave that with the wife with a couple of lenses. And if I manage to sell the rest of the gear of this (damn you Hoya) brand that caused me so much stress in the last half year, I might be able to buy something less quirky from some other manufacturer whose certified repair engineers in Russia are unlike Pentax's, that is not total tosspots, and whose warranty is, unlike Pentax's, really international.

After dying the same death my k5 came back to life after being put into the sensor cleaning mode (the mirror did not go up itself) and lifting the mirror manually about half way then switching the camera off. It worked after this. further info - I seem to have established that if the voltage on the battery's terminals is below 8.1V the multiple mirror slap cannot be repeated... if you exchange the battery for a freshly charged one (8.4V), then It might do it. This is regardless of where the battery is and which one is used - body or grip. If there is a battery in the system with voltage higher than whatever - problems will be there. Under 8.1V and the weird behaviour can't be repeated.

I have to disagree. If your camera is making the "double mirror slap" sounds - prepare yourself to send it off soon (mine died, the sudden death of a 4 month old k5 was preceded by double mirror slap getting more frequent over a course of some weeks)

I have to agree, UNLESS the repair/replacement (counting - third K5 body in my possession) of the faulty (the second K5 body) camera is not very quick and painless and the camera is flawless for 2 years AT LEAST I am off out to the canikon street for digital. I'll keep some lenses and bodies for film fun, but A LOT of Pentax stuff will be up for sale. :)

If this is the kind of quality their FLAGSHIP model shows... My Kx, however, is still going strong (gave it to my wife, so not mine any more :) ) Well, she lets me use it while K5 is being sorted.

Just like in the video above...
I have the same problem that happening on my K-5. Original Pentax battery. the clunk was occurring more and more often. Today it died completely - would not get the mirror up at all. I mean for neither the usual shooting modes, nor video, LV, or M.UP. DEAD. I mean it turns on, all well until you try to press the shutter button. Then it quickly says "battery depleted" (it was full a minute ago :))) ) and turn itself off. That is the body I got as a replacement for a body with stained sensor.

Same here. another difference between the two types of 3d party grips - Phottix/MeiKe plastik locator pins type does enable the camera menue to select battery type when AAs are used but does not have the DOF preview on the on/off dial, the DX (no brand, metal locator pins) does not give you the option of selecting battery type but has the DOF preview on the on/off dial

the Metz 48 works perfectly with Km/Kx, BUT: k-5 p-TTL is inconsistent with the unit.

My second (replacement for the stained sensor body) K5 has the same inconsistent p-TTL metering as the first with my one year old Metz 48 which works perfectly with Km and Kx bodies. Metz guys say that they are working on the issue jointly with Pentax and that Pentax admitted that it was not Metz's fault.

I quote the response from Metz:

Dear Mr Kriviniouk,

Thank you for your e-mail

Please be informed, the digital camera "Pentax K-5" is intensively tested yet by our company's developing department (laboratory) with original flash units from Pentax, e.g. "Pentax AF-540FGZ", and also with the flash units of our product range. The digital camera "Pentax K-5" is also intensively tested yet with the flash unit "mecablitz 48 AF-1 P digital".

In principle, in full automatic "P-TTL flash control mode" flash unit's flash light output intensity is only determined by the camera (e.g. "Pentax K-5") and not by any external flash unit in camera's hot shoe. Full automatic P-TTL flash control flash light output intensity is not determined by external original Pentax flash units and not determined by external Metz flash units in camera's hot shoe.

The engineers of our company's developing department (laboratory) found out that there are really problems with the full automatic "Pentax P-TTL flash light control" with the camera "Pentax K-5" and any external flash units. However, these problems are also known by running the camera "Pentax K-5" with original Pentax flash units, e.g. "Pentax AF-540FGZ". For this reason, the mentioned problems in full automatic "Pentax P-TTL flash light control" are caused by the camera "Pentax K-5" and not by any external flash units.

Please be informed, many users of the camera "Pentax K-5" and even original Pentax flash units, e.g. "Pentax AF-540FGZ", also complain about these problems with "Pentax P-TTL flash light control".

To have these problems with full automatic "Pentax P-TTL flash light control" solved, in first line the camera's "Pentax K-5" firmware needs an update. We do not recommend any flash unit for this type of camera until camera's firmware problems are solved. For this reason the digital camera "Pentax K-5" is also not mentioned in the recommendations on our homepage:
http://www.metz.de/en/photo-electron...endations.html

We regret to have no other information for you and remain

With kind regards

Wolfgang Becker
