thanks. it's been almost a year and i'm still tracking them.
tracking them also helps me to lose weight :)

the haggards have started to rebuild the nest for the next breeding season and one of the fledglings from the previous season IS still with them.

So this should be interesting.

here's my blog in case anyone is interested:

I've been following this pair of Red-tailed hawk for almost a year with my D7k and tamron 70-300 VC and I'm happy to report this is a great body-lens combination.

this has been featured in WRAL's Tar Heel Traveler

i used a sheet of regular bond paper and slipped it under the shutter button. work around the button gently. that worked for my kx.

Raleigh Raptors w/D7000 & Tamron 70-300

I've just recently published my book, Raleigh Raptors on blurb.com.

This is a culmination of my observations on a pair of Red-tailed Hawks and the rearing of their young here in downtown, Raleigh, NC.

The combination of the D7000 and Tamron 70-300 VC-USD used for this project was excellent. It's not the fastest, not by a long shot, but with experience and knowing its limitations, this combo can yield some terrific shots.

The Tamron 70-300 is by far, the sharpest consumer grade zoom in this range that I have used.

Have a look.

i moved to nikon last year, from k10->km->kx->D7000 and the learning curve wasn't bad at all.
after 7 months of use, the only thing i've wanted was to be able to zoom in 100% in one button press. nikon left that out of the d7000 (it's in the higher end models though).

as for forums, i haven't found any equivalent to this one.

there's nikonians which is the most popular but you need to pay for membership AFAIK.

adam,

i recently put an ad in the marketplace and it was moved to the expired listings.
what gives? my status was a pentaxian and now it's been changed to veteran member.

does it make a difference if a member has dual systems?

what's going on here?

thanks

from the kx i switched to the d7000 not the k5.

lenses? if you're into primes, pentax is the way to go.

for zooms, nikon has more including 3rd party from sigma, toky and tammy.
yes, some nikon glass is expensive, but at least it's available.

my wife still shoots with her k200, but she'll be upgrading this year.
sadly it won't be a kr or a k5 and since there's no Pentax in-between model, it probably won't be a pentax.

Nikon D7000 + 70-300 VR vs. Pentax K5 + Sigma 100-300

i have this combo and i love it. i don't have the siggy 100-300 f4 so can't compare, but this combo is great.

the tamron's VC is excellent, the AF is fast definitely faster than my kx w/ sigma 50-150 (HSM II).
on top of that, it's more accurate than my kx/50-150 combo ever was.

also remember that there are quite a bit more AF modes/adjustments on the D7k vs the k5, allowing your to pick the best mode for the scene.

i've posted in 2 different threads some 300mm wide open shots.

Despite the dismal weather, I decided to take my lunch break outside... a walk… w/ my d7k.

I’ve seen this hawk before nesting at a nearby church, and today it was hunting time.

More shots here:

Caution: a few shots show the predator with its prey and may be a bit “raw”

don't forget that your subject is also moving.

no amount of VR or VC can help with that. only a high shutter can freeze motion.

to get a high enough shutter speed.

VC is a big help, but not the answer to all situations.

at 300mm i try to get the shutter above 1/250 if possible and since the d7k has pretty good/low high-iso noise, cranking it up to iso1000 is no problem.

remember, these subjects are not really standing still and i'm shooting hand-held so a faster shutter will help.

AF confirm innacurate (confusion)

i had the same issue. the wider the lens, the worse the problem.

some folks explained that it's the sensor size and that it's quite BIG and the wider the lens, the more possibility that the sensor will pickup and lock on something that you didn't want.

focusing from close focus to infinity will lock at a different object compared to focusing from infinity to close focus.

this probably also relates to why sometimes i look at my lens's distance scale and it will say something like 7 feet when i'm trying to focus on a subject at infinity.

whatever the issue is, the end result is a mis-focused image.

it's not about not knowing to manual focus. i've done that since 1979 :), but it's the manual AF "assist" mechanism of the pentax DSLR's that seems to be klunky and inaccurate.

i was hoping from the *ist DL to the kx things would improve, but sadly, it did not, at least not in this regard. i don't know how much better the kr/k5 would be, but it seems folks are commenting on the SAME issue.
