K-5 and Adobe color profiles in Lightroom 6

Thanks - I think this is what I'm going to try, when I can find the time to experiment.

I agree that usually, the Adobe Standard works fine for my purposes. It seems to be more neutral and accurate than some of the in-camera profiles. The only reason I want to play with the other profiles is in certain cases where I'm having trouble getting the look I want, and Pentax's profile seems to be giving me the colors I'm looking for when Adobe's isn't. I'll have to see if I can dig up the example I'm thinking of. It's printed an hanging on my wall, but I don't have a digital copy near me at the moment :-).

K-5 and Adobe color profiles in Lightroom 6

The main thing I'm interested in is being able to see my photos with Pentax's color profile as well as with Adobe's standardized one. Is it possible to shoot a DNG photo, then pull the embedded profile out of that with Adobe's profile editor, and save it into LR as another option I can apply to all the PEF photos I've already taken? I think that would do the trick for now.

It's really only once in a while where I just can't get the look I want by changing things within Adobe's standard profile. When I ran into that a while back with my K20D, I just switched to the Pentax profile and the look I wanted for some really blue water was there. Adobe's profile tinted the water a bit too green and desaturated it a bit, at least for that shot.

Thanks for the tips!

Yes, that's exactly what I'm looking for - Pentax's color rendering choices, and not just Adobe's standard. Unfortunately, while I have those Adobe standard profiles on my system, I don't have any Pentax color profiles. Note that in your screenshot, all the profile options are Adobe's. I don't think any of them are following Pentax's colorimetry, and that's what I'm interested in.

If you look in ...\CameraProfiles\Camera, do you see any camera-specific Pentax profiles for the K-5? I don't. I am using LR 6.14, not the CC version, so our copies are slightly different, but I suspect this is just an Adobe choice across the board to not bother providing Pentax camera profiles for the K-5.

K-5 and Adobe color profiles in Lightroom 6

I shot some nice fall foliage pictures recently, and as I was adjusting them, I decided to try switching from the Adobe Standard color profile to a Pentax one. I was disappointed to find that I have no options to pick from! I haven't done this in quite a while, and it turns out the last shot I adjusted the color profile on was from my old K20D, which has a camera-specific profile in Lightroom and Camera Raw. I looked in my profiles directory (C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Lightroom\Resources\CameraProfiles\Camera), and found that Adobe provided profiles for the K10D, K20D, K200D, K-7, K-3 II, and K-1. My K-5 and many other Pentax cameras aren't included.

Am I just out of luck in terms of an Adobe-provided camera-specific profile?

I thought I would at least get an embedded profile from the camera itself, but I'm out of luck on that front as well. I always shoot RAW, but I have also always been shooting PEF. Is an embedded profile only added to DNG files, and not to PEF files? Is there any other way I can try out the Pentax color profile instead of Adobe's standard one?

How long does a dedicated film scanner last?

I can only speak about my experience with a used Konica Minolta film scanner. It was used an unknown number of times before I bought it, but I've run several thousand negatives through it and it still works fine.

I do expect that EVFs will improve until I no longer find them annoying, but at the moment, I still do. The ones I've tried lack resolution, lack dynamic range, and lag behind reality too much. I have definitely been spoiled by Pentax's very good OVFs!

It's also confusing and nearly unpronounceable to the uninitiated. "Asterisk-ist D?" That's a really bad idea for marketing and branding!

I was going to recommend a K-5, as it's what I shoot with, and close enough to the K-3 that I am not quite tempted enough to upgrade (waiting for that next-generation camera that Adorama recently teased us about!). I am pleasantly surprised by the generosity of that anonymous forum member who donated his K-5 to your worthy cause! Best wishes and happy shooting with it!

Why do hobby stores mostly stock 4:3 frames?

On a related note, if you find that you need a custom mat size, try this site:
Bux1 Picture Matting

I had a set of six photos I wanted to frame, and the aspect ratio needed to be something unusual in order to fit the six spaces on my wall that I had available. I found some frames that worked well, but couldn't find any pre-cut mats for 14x18 frames, and custom mats looked really expensive until I found that site. The end result turned out just like I wanted, and their prices were pretty good compared to all the hobby stores around my area.

Stranger things have happened (like *ist D)!

Since Pentax seems to always count down as they make newer and more advanced models, 922 would leave lots of room for future generations!

K1 Continuous Shooting Color Shifts

I had a similar problem where the back of a room used compact florescent bulbs, but the rest used incandescent bulbs. I had to set the WB separately for each shot depending on what lights were most prominent, and in some shots it was really tough because the foreground was one and the background the other. At least in that case the lights weren't flickering with different colors though!
Do remember that most casual observers probably won't notice subtle problems, so just get it really close, and make sure that you get skin tones right.

K1 Continuous Shooting Color Shifts

First thing to rule out is the AWB. Look at the photos and see what color temperature the camera picked. If it's different between the two shots in question, then that's at least part of the problem, and you can fix it by setting both photos to the same color balance.

If all the color settings are the same, and the photos still show the color shift, then I think folks are right who are saying that it's the type of lights. Slow down the shutter until you get the entire color cycle for every shot, and that should stabilize things. As 77me said, if you slow all the way down to 1/60th, that seems like it should definitely work, but since some lights flicker at much higher frequencies, you may not have to slow down that far before the problem goes away.

I guess I should keep up with the latest Pentax products better :-). I didn't realize the phone app lets you see your shots right away like that - that does sound really useful.

Nice shot! Is that last aircraft an MD-88? Boeing 717?

My sister flies CRJ-200s, which look similar, but their noses are a lot pointier :-).

The app sounds very useful for some situations, but in a group shot with me in the photo, I don't think I'd want to be messing with my phone and trying to smile and look like I belong in the picture too :-). That's what led me to the interval shooting idea. It has worked pretty well so far, even if I end up with some duds at the start and end of the shoot as I walk over and back.

That's an interesting limitation. I used to use the infrared remote a fair bit for group photos including me, but lately, I've just set up the camera to do interval shooting every 4-5 seconds. That way I can just let it rip without having to press the remote button and get back into position while the self-timer counts down. I think I would miss the infrared remote sensor, but I could work around it.

That's an interesting perspective; I thought the K-3 was better in low light. Do you have some more specifics on what you don't like about the K-3? I have the K-5 and am wondering about upgrading to a K-3, KP, or K-1.

It could, I agree, but I'm not sure how to measure the quality of a post very well. Perhaps you need to have a certain percentage of your posts quoted or liked, but that could be gamed if people team up to help each other.

The bottom line is that the contest should encourage people to post something useful. I don't like the raffle thread part of the contest as much because it doesn't relate to how well the user has helped the forums with interesting posts, it only relates to how well they do at posting quickly when a thread opens.

I disagree. I think it's better for the forums that the rules require a good amount of participation and weed out people who only show up for the giveaway, but don't actually contribute anything to the forums. Having the raffle threads is slightly annoying to me, since it penalizes busy people who might not have free time and a good connection to the internet during the right few seconds. Having the last thread stay open longer allows busy folks who participate and care about the forums to also have a chance to win, so I think the rules for the second giveaway were a great improvement. Having the clause that everything shuts down at midnight prevents the last thread and the contest from staying open that long anyway.

In short, I recommend keeping the same rules next time around. If you want to change anything, boost the number of required posts a little. That will make it harder to qualify, but better for the forums.
