I especially like how whoever took the photos just casually hung the mount ring on the side. "Isn't this where it goes?"

Bulk film loader - what to look out for?

There are only a few designs I have ever seen, and they are all pretty simple mechanical devices. There really isn't much to go wrong. If you want you can test it using a "scrap" roll of film. Just feed the whole roll out of the cassette, then cut the film so there is a "tail" coming out of the cassette. Save both the film and the cassette. When you get there, you can load the film into the loader, tape the end to the tail on the cassette, and wind it in just like you would from a bulk roll. Of course the test roll will be ruined by this point, but at least you will be able to get some sense of if it feels right. You could also use a LED flashlight to check for cracks in the plastic.

One thing to consider is that you don't actually -need- a bulk loader. All you really need is a room that is pitch black, a pair of scissors, some tape (I like masking), and empty snap together cassettes. I only used a bulk loader a few times, as I quickly became annoyed with losing the last frame of each roll to the pre-exposure at the end of a roll, which comes from the way loaders work. Sure, I can't accurately predict how many frames are on a roll, but that isn't nearly as annoying as loosing a shot that was an hour ago.

Hey everyone!

I have 2 cameras that I just don't need. If I was a wealthy man I'd keep them, but I'm not, and I'd rather get something else. I am willing to trade for an *ist D (not Ds) or a K-5 as appropriate. I don't mind cameras with patina, as long as they work properly. If you buy both cameras at asking price I will ship them for free in the US, and take a $20 discount off international shipping.

Speaking of cameras with patina, camera is a Fuji XE-1 with tons of it. Please look at the photos carefully, and yes, that is a huge scratch on the screen. It's not as annoying in real life as you might think, but you will definitely notice it. As far as I can tell the camera works 100% properly, but I've never used it with anything other than old manual lenses. If there is anything wrong, I would humbly take a return. The strap is not included, but it does come with a battery, charger, and body cap.
Asking $160 obo
SOLD

The second camera is a PENTAX *ist Ds in fantastic condition. It has about 3,500 clicks on the shutter. I won't say it's perfect, because there is some probably tiny blemish Somewhere I will never spot it, but it is in really, really nice shape. It includes the original strap, a body cap, and a set of the better IKEA rechargeable batteries.
Asking $95 obo

Thanks for looking!

A lot of people get way too hung up on lenses. Clay Enos did a great street portrait series years ago using nothing but a 50mm on a full frame camera. The way he put it was something to the tune of "if I want close I AM close."

Check if those lenses have the Ricoh pin before you mount them on the camera. If they have it, and you mount them on the camera, they could become permanently stuck on there.

As far as Vivitar 28mm lenses are concerned, you should look here:
Great Vivitar 28mm Bestiary

It is truly dizzying how many 28mm lenses Vivitar marketed.

I'd like to try that rectangular prism screen, but not at the expense of av mode. Oh well.

Steve,

I'm afraid the years have made me forget the little details until reminded. In regards to the film door thing, we are both right, and both wrong. The early production P3ns had the metal film door, but the later ones had the plastic door like the P30t. I have had 3 P3ns over the years, and they all had the plastic door. That being said, I do remember seeing a metal door example at a camera show once. I have no idea how many were made with one door versus the other.

I was completely unaware that the n-less P3 didn't do av mode. I owned one very briefly, but never actually put film in it.

For reference regarding the rectangular microprisim screen. The link is for the P5, but the early P3 had the same one:

And a photo "compliments of" pacific rim camera:

- The P3 had a metal film door, metal bottom plate, and if I remember correctly no thumb rest.

- some P3's have a focus screen where the microprisim part around the slit image is rectangular instead of round

- some P3's do not have a cable release attachment point

I did know that. I guess I just forgot to put it in my post.

There is also the P3t/P30t, which has a different body color scheme and a diagonal split image. If I remember correctly, the shutter sounds different to the other P3 line cameras, but I could be wrong on that.

Edit: also, the P3t send to be the rarest if anyone cares. I've held all the others in my hand at some point. I'm not sure I've seen a P3t outside of a photo on the k-mount page.

I have used bulk loaded cartridges in the P3n too. Just learn the DX code and scratch it into the side of the cassette with the edge of the blade on a utility knife. Again, it's not really as big of deal as most people make it out to be.

The ME is a fantastic, very underrated camera.

However...

My vote goes to the P3n (not the P3). I'll admit I'm biased, as the P3n was my first camera, but I do have many reasons:

1. The easiest film loading of any manual wind Pentax SLR.
2. Light seals that just don't go bad.
3. A nice but modest grip on the front AND a thumb grip on the back
4. A one finger operable shutter speed dial.
5. The battery compartment requires no tools to open or close, and you can't loose the cap, because it's permanently attached.
6. It will run for years on a pair of LR44's.
7. DX ISO setting. No, you can't manually override it, but when was the last time you actually did that?
8. It's pleasantly light, but not too light.
9. Shutter release cables thread into the side of the lens mount instead of the shutter button.
10. The set shutter speed is back lit in the viewfinder, while the recommended shutter speed is back lit and blinking. super simple, super easy to understand.
11. Nice, beefy, single purpose DOF preview lever.
12. Bright red light that blinks for self timer. Easily seen in broad daylight.
13. A decently large viewfinder that this user can see all 4 corners of while wearing his glasses.
14. This one is definitely subjective, but in my opinion, it is a really good looking camera. I know it doesn't really matter, but it kind of does.

Yes the shutter sounds a bit hollow compared to the earlier Pentax cameras, but it doesn't sound bad, just different. The viewfinder isn't the biggest ever, but it's hardly tiny. Toss on a M 50 f/1.7 and you have a nice, lightweight, easy to use walking around camera. If you want it even lighter, toss on a Ricoh 50mm f/2. With a bit of careful shopping, he Ricoh lens and the P3n should collectively set you back about $50. At that price, you can just casually hand the camera to your mugger and say "Here you go.". If I have one true complaint with the P3n, it is the lack of exposure compensation. Then again, I only recall getting a bad exposure out of my P3n when I know I manually overrode what it suggested.

The whole piece was very well written, but I think perhaps the biggest surprise was the photographs of the two cameras side by side. The K1 is much larger than I thought it would be! Is it the largest non-medium format Pentax ever?

By the way, those are some fantastic portraits, although I couldn't see all of them due to viewing this on an iPhone.
