Theta360.com is a little clunky for sharing, but it sure does "show" the images nicely and make it fun to interact with them. :-)

I'm glad this won't be the end of our long-distance camera-centric romance. <3 Promise we can stay Facebook friends at least?

(Maybe working in the litigation department has made me too confrontational. Ha!)

Philosophically, metaphorically, since you're asking, I'm going to poop on that party as not being truly in the spirit of Single In. You can't just change lenses all nimbly bimbly!? Why sign up with one if you're just going to allow yourself to switch on a whim? If you want to treat the 77, there's always November. :-)

You say you think you would be getting "better results" with the FA77... but that's not really the point of Single In, right? To get "better results"? I thought it was about learning the capabilities of and how to best use the chosen lens? I'm truly open to arguments.

All that being said, I have attempted to play, and then dropped out of Single In more than a few times when I just couldn't keep up with the challenge and no one ever berated me for coming back the next month (although I'm going to justify myself by saying that's not exactly the same thing as switching lenses mid-stream).

Ultimately, this is just a game with strangers on the Internet and you can do whatever is most fun...

One Photographer Reports That 95% Of Travel Photos Taken With Cell Phones

Don't they?? My K-1 and K-S2 are both wifi capable.

I went to a baseball game with my husband and we spotted his mom and dad across the park. I took a zoomed-in picture of them with my K-1, sent it to my cell phone and texted it to the in-laws within a few minutes.

Yeah, it's a couple more steps, but it's there if you utilize it! :)

Yep. This.

For a lot of DSLR users, taking a picture is about the technical practice of operating the camera and lens, applying the correct settings, properly editing, etc. It's super fun and rewarding - I do it almost every day.

But happy snappy cell phone shooters are probably the ones with the purest inspiration to record the memory of the experience, and I think it's immensely precious to be able to share the memory instantly via wireless-connected devices.

No hate here - I like it all! But, personally, I prefer shooting with my "big" camera. :-)

Thanks! I had the Theta on the end of a selfie stick (or "monopod" if we're too cool for selfie sticks here) and held it in the crook of my left knee with my foot tucked under my other leg. I set the 5-second self timer and SPUN myself around in an office chair and then tried to hold as still as possible once the shutter fired.

I think the exposure was about 3 seconds.

Here are a couple more from today.

So far I would say the still image IQ (sharpness, rendering, dynamic range, true-to-life colors, what have you) is identical to the Theta S... BUT the transfer speed is INSANE. SO much faster than the S!! It must be thanks to those Android brains they put in it? The image transfers almost instantly with the V, whereas with the S, my phone's screen would go to sleep before the image transferred.

The V also seems to have much less pronounced stitching lines - again, I think due to an improvement in the "brain".

Alright!!

Primary checklist:
  • Desktop app (for viewing, uploading to Theta360.com, and upgrading firmware).

  • Theta S smartphone app (for making exposures).

  • Theta+ smartphone app for (for editing).

Pro tips:
  • Always expose for shadows.

  • Pay loving attention to EV compensation.

  • HDR mode is your friend.

  • Files sent to your phone are not full size - plug the Theta into your computer with a USB to get full resolution images. (Email them to your phone or download them from Flickr if you want to edit the full res images in the Theta+ app.)

  • Using a tripod is great, but I recommend one with short legs and a long neck, to minimize the footprint the Theta captures below itself.

  • Don't be ashamed to use a selfie stick to get a better angle on shots you're in (and to fend off the funny hand distortion).

I can't wait to see what you can do!

I agree that you should shoot for you. I agree that for most of us playing this game, photography is art and expression. Conversely, all of us here know how to use our gear and (I hope) all of us want to become better photographers, develop a better "eye", become more skilled and hone our craft, so to speak. When we see an image that's good, marking down a "fave" is a concise way to indicate that, but a better way to examine what is really nice about it is to develop a vocabulary, become thoughtful, verbalize and specify what really "works". In doing so, you're bound to come across something that "doesn't work" - that's OK. What is a perfect photo? Have you seen one? Have you taken one? Are they all perfect? (I don't think so.)

Life is about enjoying the experience, so don't voluntarily subject yourself to Single In if it's taking away from the pleasure of photography.

On the other hand, I was tempered in the flames of art school and I've spent a lot of my life talking about the elements of visual art - giving and receiving critiques makes me feel engaged and involved with the development and maturation of my own (and others') creativity. It can be hard not to make it precious, because most of us in this game who shoot every day end up posting more than a few snapshots or pictures of loved ones, personal things, but I think all of us can glance at an image and place it somewhere on the spectrum of "good" and "bad" (or "successful" and "unsuccessful", to use less loaded terms).

ANYWAY. There's certainly not a right or wrong way to go about this and I'm certainly not trying to argue - just being the photographical philosophical devil's advocate. :-)

For September I used a new Rokinon 85/1.4 (as opposed to my previous copy that I ditched 3 years ago because of a sticky aperture).

Whether it's just a better copy, it's better on the K-1, or I've just gotten better with my gear (most likely), using this lens for the month was much more pleasant than my last go-round with it. It's not an enormous lens, but it is heavy and I'm looking forward to not carrying it around in October. :-) At first blush, the focusing ring seems stiff, but when you're trying to slide into that tiny sliver of focus at this lens' wide open aperture, I can see why it's designed in such a way. This lens has an A setting and ring, so I can be used on tubes or with any of the exposure settings on the camera. Very nice.

I didn't put the hood on it once. It did give me some nice haze shooting into the sun, but trying to get a flare out of it was pretty much impossible. Starbursts were nice, although they're not really my thing. CA in high-contrast situations was present, but it was crisp and clear, which made it easy for Lightroom to suck right out with the eyedropper tool. :-)

At f/1.4 it is soft, but not unusable, although focusing was a challenge. I recommend Live View whenever possible.

As I recall from my previous copy, MFD is still "meh" at 1 meter, but I was able to get close enough to pretty much everything I wanted for framing purposes. Additionally, the resolution of the files from the K-1 means cropping is a welcome and excellent solution.

Ultimately, I'm super glad I tried this lens again. Rokinon is a real dream-come-true lens company, in my opinion. The quality for the price is just excellent for folks who don't mind manual focus.

Just got my V today! I notice in the app's video settings that you can change the 4k movie settings from a 5 minute recording to 25 minutes. That's not the issue here, right?

I was a good photographer, but a terrible participant for September...

I'm joining October with the Theta. Whether it will be the S or the V, only B&H can decide. :-)

[I went ahead and ordered the Theta V, but I'm waiting on the shipment... Anyone in the market for an S?]

Flickr is the best out of everything I've tried.

Instagram is fun for interacting, but so low-res --- I like it for selfies, mostly. ;-)

Thanks! I'm a long-time "Single In" participant, so assuming it gets here before October 1, I'll give it a full month of rigorous testing. :-)

It seems like a minor boost to (still) image quality, but V claims to have better (stitching) software and max ISO increased to 6400, so I think it's worth an upgrade.

(My Theta S will be put up for sale; first dibs are still open!)

Meh, that picture is years old. Any mouthbreathers hanging around my Photostream for that long for more gratuitous nudity obviously can't help themselves --- there are plenty of Flickr accounts that post nothing but barenaked bodies. ;-)

EDIT: I sold that chair at our garage sale early this summer. I wonder if I should have set out a little framed picture of this belfie so people would know what they were getting into...
