Thanks @jbinpg!
@adam I dont think so, unless i can be in video mode without live view on and taking pictures normally. I'll check the dial.

This is the issue with having multiple systems, lol, when things go wrong I get confused how each system does their thing.

Bulb mode on k1? Help!

Now that I look into it, seems like my dial isn't working. It has never left manual mode so I didn't notice it before - but moving the dials does nothing most of the time. Then it would move to shutter priority sometime, then move back to manual, skipping all the other modes.
Do I have a dial failure or did I somehow have a function on that renders the dial useless?

Trying to activate bulb mode , set the dial to B, but somehow the shutter speed setting always overrides it. What do I do? Haha.

Finally got out in the blackest night , and can't for the life of me figure this out.

How to fire flash with old manual lenses?

Thanks for the help guys.
Looks like my AF160 is broken.

I remembered trying my AF540 before, and i thought it didn't work, but now i realized it was just shooting full power all the time, for some reason.
I popped in a different flash on A mode on the camera, and it worked perfectly.

Thanks for the help!

Hi all,

I've got an old pentax 50mm 1.2 without A setting. I love it, but no matter what I do it won't fire my flash. I even have an old AF 160? that I mounted on, but it wont fire it.
Is there something I can do to make it work? Maybe I just dont know what setting i should have it on.

I am shooting with a K1.

Ya, I am aware, just that someone says that you can actually remove the LX viewfinder as well, right before the advice on making sure the lens is off. Thanks! :)

I joined in 2009 as one of those bratty snot-nosed digital only pentaxian :o.

I am just going through the known pentaxian phases right now, so at this moment i am looking at film processing.....i think thats stage 3 of the addiction, stage 2 being LBA. :D

Did you mean for LX, or for the 6x7 , or both? Cuz I was actually looking at the LX yesterday before I accidentally look at the 6x7.

I see. Thanks guys. Looking at adam's link, looks like there are a LOT of viewfinders that can be attached to the Pentax 6x7. Does this waist level finder come default? As in, if i remove the viewfinder of a Pentax 6x7 , do i find this waist level finder underneath it, or is it something i have to buy and install separately?

---------- Post added 05-30-2017 at 04:15 PM ----------

Ok, i think i got confused because the camera without a viewfinder looks ALMOST like the camera with a waist level finder....

Here it is without the viewfinder (notice the 3 contact points) from the for sale section by filmamigo

and with a waist level finder :

Am I looking at a ...digital back? What am I looking at? I am not familiar with medium format, but why is there a digital preview of the image on the pentax 6x7?

Thanks....

So it looks like its...a focussing screen. Does that come standard? Do all pentax 6x7 top come off to reveal this screen?

So, walked in on Henry's in hamilton yesterday, which is one of the biggest retailer in Ontario.
Couldn't find a section for Pentax.

There were Nikon, Canon, Fuji, sony, heck, olympus was there, i think...and sigma/tamron.
No pentax.

The sales person was confused when i asked for Pentax. Like, he wasn't even sure what that is. Pentax? hmm...no..thats...fuji...hmmm.

Is that just in hamilton henry's? :p. Cuz..thats depressing. Get on your game, Pentax.:eek:

The Grass Is Greener? Some Thoughts Over Shooting With Nikon For The Last Month

Ah right. Well, the issue is cost and accuracy. That is to say, under ideal lighting and subject distance, the accuracy of the lenses are just fine They are fine when i test them. They are fine when i chimp. Then you go for a full day of wedding in all sorts of lights and locations, and you find a lot of misfocus. The accuracy goes down under extreme lighting, and in camera calibration for each lens is a hit and miss. If the lighting swings the other way, the calibration is again off. Its easy if all i need to do is a constant micro adjustment of + or -, but at times when situations are ideal, that micro adjustment actually throws off the focus that was spot on. So i find myself micro adjusting for different locations. And in a wedding, i can be in 6 different locations in the day, throughout lighting situations.

So its really quite unpredictable. I can send it in, but i haven't because of the cost to check and timelines. I can't really be out without a lens in wedding season. I may do so come this winter.

I am being a bit harsh with pentax AF and lighting system, but i love my pentax the most because of all the other things I mentioned. But i can point my 70-200 on a D800E at anything, anyday, and it will be spot on, instantly.

 No, of course not. As I said, I am not a reviewer - I don't get brand new copies of a specific focal range for purposes of review. I am the average photog needing lenses that covers all of my bases for weddings. I don't have a perfect test. Instead, i have a non perfect test over the years of owning these brands.

Digitalis was being sarcastic about my review, but i was being serious. ^_^. I put in more than 3000 frames across the 3 different brands each wedding from the exact same extreme lighting condition and situation, so I get exposed to a lot of non keepers from my cameras. For example, strong sunny highlights on the bride's face and dress, while the groom is in the shadows with his black suit. >_< I can tell which ones always miss focus, or which ones always have the weird colours or which ones struggles in low lighting, or which ones somehow overexposes or underexposes in a variety of circumstances. And I learn to work with them. Grab pentax, switch to manual focus. Grab nikon , ready for accurate but boring looking pictures. Grab Canon, keep switching the damn lenses because I am using primes.

I actually shoot 3 systems. Pentax K1/K5, Nikon D800E, and Canon 5DMark3. My K1 is currently my main camera.

I have the DA16-50 and 50-135 for Pentax.
70-200 and 24-70 for Nikon
and 35mm and 85mm for Canon.

I am not a hardware expert, so you can take my opinion on these systems to be as accurate as someone who walks around, picks 3 brand, and had to decide which one is better. That is to say, my opinion is extremely accurate

Autofocus.
Lets get this out of the way : Pentax AF is not as accurate, or as fast as the other two systems. No, I didn't measure it by micro seconds. I measured it by how many times I get extremely frustrated after I get home and look at the images and they are off. In fact, I am now shooting K1 with manual lenses only. Live view with manual lenses and focus peaking results in a lot more keepers.

Ergonomics.
If i have to rate ergonomics, Pentax would be first, canon would be second, nikon would be third. It just works for my hand. And I carry these for a whole wedding, so....12 hours sometimes. I can tell you if i have to shoot fuji or sony for weddings i will probably cry because of the lack of grip.

Button placement.
Pentax would be first, nikon and canon second.
I am not an expert on these machines, as I have pointed out before. I use them to take pictures, so I am not aware of a gazillion things that these things come included with. So how do i rate this? I rate it in the way that I can pick a camera, and figure out how to use it without a manual. immediately. And in this case, pentax comes first. The buttons make sense. I don't know how many times I've had to look up the Nikon manual because i accidentally switched a setting that i did not know existed and it was doing things that i did not want it to do.

Flash system.
Canon first, Nikon, then pentax. I love the ease of use of Canon's system. The menu make sense. I never had to open the manual for it. Nikon is the worst. Even though I love the commander function of nikon, but the flash is unnecessarily complicated. Pentax? Well...the exposure is always off. So i hate pentax's flash system.

Images.
Pentax first, canon then Nikon. I love pentax and canon's images. Straight out of the camera, they look like they have character. The colours just works for me. Pentax is typically more yellow/red, canon more red, and nikon more green. The nikon images are the ones most.....neutral. Boring. When i have a high fashion editorial shoot, i grab the nikon. For everything else, i put the nikon aside.
Also, in regards to dynamic range, I have a lot more confidence in recovering highlights from Canon than from nikon, which I rather recover shadows from. Pentax K1 is an allstar, and I can recover both highlights and shadows, and noise really nicely. I guess its the age of the technology.

Thats basically how i view these systems. Again, i am not an expert...but i think thats why I am accurate :p.

Whoa. How did you find all this info?

This article from dpreview says "The company will use glass from the prestigious German Schott factory (Schott is 100% owned by The Carl Zeiss Foundation), and the lens will be designed, constructed and tested in the German town of Goerlitz where the original company was based."

for their trioplan. Meyer Optik to bring back soap-bubble-bokeh Trioplan lens via Kickstarter: Digital Photography Review

I heard the focus shift of 85mm zeiss is really difficult to handle, so i have been staying away from it.

I gave in. Bought it together as part of the kickstarter with the 58mm..which basically gave me the 58mm for free.

Hey guys...

Just wanted to say that the kickstarter combo of the primoplan 58 and 75mm is priced cheaper than purchasing the 75mm by itself.

WHOA.

I have a 24mm, 50 and 125mm for pentax, so a 58 and 75 may be a great idea.
