Thanks again for the comments... here's the link to my flickr

Flickr: gaiL-gaiL's Photostream

that one was actually pretty simple...with a rig shot, the car is only really moving about 5-10km/h at most, but the longer shutter speed gives it that illusion of a real fast speed....we were in a parking lot and just had the idea to have him hang his head out the car while the car was moving.

I don't have a shot of the rig on the shots above (I recently switched to another computer) but here's some shots to give you a peek on to what the rig looks like

Some automotive shots I took back in 2008 that I did not edit until now....

This one was fairly straight forward, I rolled down my window while in the back seat of a car to take this....

My cousin had put together a DIY automotive rig with nothing more than a mono pod, some zip ties and two suction cups and the end result is what you see here!

Car pics - Infinity G35

I placed the 2 strobes on light stands and pointed down towards the car on most of the images illuminating the body panels .....I wouldn't consider the strobes to be relatively high...i'm about 5'10 and the strobes were typically eye level to me just aimed down a bit pointed to the wheel wells on most of the shots or the front grill

next time I shoot, I'll try to post a couple of set up shots

The first four images of this set were all shot with a bare flash.

The last 3 images from this set utilized umbrellas on both strobes to get that 'wrap around' soft light. The only thing I hate about using umbrellas is that it can leave some really ugly reflections as the light source is 'big'

it is Infiniti!! lol, it was a late night post! what do you want me to say....

as for the others asking how I lit up the shots, all exterior shots were done with a 2 light set up using gadget infinity triggers to the strobes. The strobes themselves were pretty beat up Sunpak 422d's picked them up from e-bay as well.

The interior shot was done at a 2 light set up as well with shoot through umbrellas on the left and right side of the car.

i believe most, if not all the shots were done at 1/180 @ either F8 or F10.

whoops should have included it on the original post...the exterior shots were all taken with the Tamron 28-75mm f2.8 and the interior shot of the G35 was taken with a zenitar 16mm 'fisheye'

A recent shoot for a friend of mine...these shots are to be submitted to a car magazine and hopefully have his car featured and hopefully my shots published.....it was a cloudy day with sun poppin' in and out so it was quite hard for me to keep a consistent light....anyways, I present to you the Infiniti G35:

if anyone else is interested in the other cars I shot that day, check out my flickr:

C&C is always welcomed, I'm still looking to improve on a lot of areas of this type of photography.

Most of my post processing tips come from color correction and sharpening (not too much though!) From time to time I'll use brightness and contrast to get the colors just to where they should be. For the HDR shots, I tend to do use the dodge/burn tool on the body panels of the car which give it a 'neat' effect.

Thanks for the comments - shooting cars is great! its always been my passion. As for your question, the first pic was shot around 7-8pm on a relatively cloudy day...the sun was setting by this point and we were losing light quite quickly. I managed to get this shot off in time before all of the sky was pure black.

Hi everyone,

I've got some friends who have been approached with an opportunity to be featured on a car magazine. I've taken some sample shots to provide to the magazine editor, here's what we managed to capture:

Strobist Info:
- 1 GI Triggered Sunpak 422d 1/4 power pointed towards grill of the car (bare)
- 1 GI Triggered Digital Concept flash 1/2 power with stofen camera left on the body of the car

HDR Infinity G35

Strobist Info:

- 1 GI Trigger bare Sunpak 422d camera right 1/4 power pointed towards front of car
- 1 GI Trigger Digital Concept stofen camera Left aimed at model 1/2 power

C&C is always welcomed, there's many more shots on my flickr stream, but I felt these were the best. Let me know what you guys think!

Thanks for the comment. I'd post it in a larger size but i'd like to keep the file sizes small for now as i want to keep the thread 'user friendly'

Check out my flickr Flickr: Photos & Video from gaiL-gaiL if you'd like to see larger sizes.

It was a nice weekend and decided to take shots of my friend's cars...a mix of HDR & strobist photography. Though there were various techniques on how I accomplished the look, the equipment I utilized to take the shots were simply a K10D & Zenitar 16mm fisheye lens. Anyways, here they are and enjoy:

Toyota MR-2

Subaru Impreza 2.5i SE (this is my car)

Subaru Impreza 2.5RS

Mazda Protege ES GT

Now...off to the strobist shot:

Strobist Info:
- 2 strobes utilized for the shot
- left side: digial concept flash 1/1 power coming from left to body panel
- right side: utilized Sigma EF 500 to light up wheel well & hood optically triggering.
- Building in the back is light painted
- GI triggers used to trigger strobes.

Strobist Info:
- 15 second exposure utilized to capture the approaching light
- optical flash manually triggered on right size to capture car
- GI triggeres used to trigger strobes

Thanks for the comment!

I think the FA 50mm 1.4 & the battery grip really helped me to stabilize my hand to hold the shots...as much as possible, i tried to use a shutter speed that was faster than 1/60th....i only took 3 bracketed exposures for each image (I usually take 5 or more) because i just knew i couldn't hold a camera stable for 5 shots in a row....

I was shooting with a K10D + 50mm FA 1.4 (best lens I've used) I just wish I had been able to bring a wider lens to get better framing of the picture.

With such bad lighting conditions on most of the buildings, I had to use handheld HDR....I was kind of worried that they wouldn't turn out very well, but i was very pleased with the results.

My balcony hotel view

Cathedral doors downtown

Nickels on St. Catherine's (i think?)

President Kennedy

C&C welcome... beautiful city! just wish I had more time and the right equipment to really get some great shots.
