AF.C on K-5 II vs K-3

Here are two pictures from an event in Sandnes, Norway. I used my F*250-600/5.6 on all photos that day, but started with the K-5 II and ended with my K-3. Later when I was home and had a look at the pictures, I saw that most of the ones I took with K-5 II was unsharp. K-5 II struggled with AF.C and was not quick enough to focus before I took the picture. I use focusing with the AF button and does not have focus activated on the shutter release.
With the K-3 things got better. K-3 is faster to lock focus before first photo in a series and is also more capable to hold correct focus with AF.C. It is not perfect, but better than K-5 II :)

When using AF.S, it is the other way around. I find K-5 II to be more accurate and consistent than K-3. K-5 II nails focus most of the time, but K-3 is sometimes front focusing and sometimes backfocusing in perhaps 10% of the images with the other 90% good to very good.

K3 II AF vs K3 AF

That is the sensitivity range for the light meter and not the AF. The light meter is measuring the light on the matte screen and is receiving light from the whole area of the front lens. And therefore it is dependent of the aperture of the lens.

But not the AF.

Sorry, but the EV rating og the AF system is not dependent of the lens. The AF sensor is not capturing light from the whole area of the front element, but only from two small spots. These small spots are not dependent of the lens and a f/5.6 lens is just as capable to focus in dim light as a f/1.4 one. But there are of course mechanical differences on lenses which make AF more suitable on one lens compared to another one.

As mentioned here, https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/32-digital-processing-software-printing/2...ml#post3266948 , Ricoh really is on the wrong track when they make extensions to the DNG file format. I wish they could use DNG floating point files for HDR and linear DNG for pixel shift, but I don't think they will ever change this.

Adobe already support HDR DNG from the 1.4 specification. They are using floating point data to store information. What K-3 should do was merging the images with the help of the shake reduction and create one single image with floating point instead of a bogus DNG file with several images in one file.

And Adobe already support images with RGB data. It's called linear DNG. It's a functional and great format and a MUCH better alternative than creating four images in one bogus DNG file for each pixel shift image.

So we should instead ask Ricoh why they don't use standard DNG instead of creating their own bogus files which only their own software supports. Whats the point with an open file format as DNG when the data within are non-standard and require special software? I could understand it if there wasn't any alternatives, but DNG support both HDR and pixel shift. Why not use it as specified?

If Adobe should start supporting special DNG functionality made up by Pentax/Ricoh, why should they stop there? After a while the DNG format would be a total mess. I think it is a much better solution for us and Adobe to just stick with the specification and try to force/encourage camera producers to stay with the specification and not make their own extensions to DNG.

K-3 II and the GPS logging function

I need to know if the position logging function in K-3 II is still going to work if the camera is turned off (by the power switch) or in standby-mode (powered down). As the max log time depend on the log interval time, I suppose there is a small buffer memory in the gps unit which could be used to save positions even if the camera is turned off.

Does anyone know this?

I would also like to know if the gps is faster to start compared to o-gps1. If o-gps1 is turned on, but in standby-mode because the camera is off, it still take several seconds to be ready when you press the shutter to wake up your camera. It would be interesting to know if the logging function makes the inbuilt gps available instantly as it is after all continuously logging positions.

F*250-600/5.6 on a tripod and at 600mm and f/5.6. Camera is a Q7 with the Pentax K->Q adapter. It is just a single shot, DNG-format picture. It was a lot of atmospheric turbulence and not easy to manual focus on it.

Actually, F*250-600/5.6 is at its best at f/5.6. Diffraction is limiting at smaller apertures. I tested F*250-600/5.6 against DA*300/4 and the zoom was better at f/5.6 than the prime at f/5.6 :)

It could be 540mm, but after som measurements on the pictures shown it seems the front element is around 85mm. So if it is 540mm it has to be a f/6.3 lens.
