The world's smallest SLR (1978)

This looks like fun, and it seems film is at least available for it. I wonder if my local pro lab would develop it.
Smaller than half frame sounds deliciously low-fi...

Year in film - 2009

I'd say this has been a big year for me in terms of photography. I started in digital with my K20D, and ventured down the whole LBA path. Spent a good deal of money on lenses and accessories, too.

For a while I'd been trying to emulate the look of film, once I realized I really didn't care much about absolute realism. When I read Mike Johnston's Leica rants on The Online Photographer, I decided I should at least buy a film body to go along with my digital stuff, just to try. I have barely touched my digital camera since.

I purchased a K1000 and an M 50 1.7 (which I use exclusively- it's a marvelous lens so why switch?). I feel like I've come home, so to speak. Everything's simpler, more about the photos. I love the tactile sensations of film, the poring over negatives and slides, the happy accidents. Nothing is clinical or sterile with film: you could say that, in a metaphorical sense, film is actually more life-like. I like that. I like holding in my hand a physical record of an event that is an actual relic of that event.

Now I'm getting into multiple exposures, and color photography, probably because it's fall and everything is so gorgeous around these parts:

I also got a toy camera (half-frame diana mini):

This winter will be another big step: my wife and I are buying our first house, and my father-in-law has given me a beseler to play with, as well as all of his old darkroom equipment. THAT will be a whole other adventure in itself!

two questions: k1000 metering, multiple exposures on which pentax

Yeah, that's the technique I use. The problem is that when you wind it again after your second exposure it doesn't catch right away, and only advances about a half frame. So you have to take a blank shot and wind it again in order to clear the frame. This wastes film and throws off 1-hour photo machines since the spacing is off.

Thanks for the response. The LX looks awesome, I'll put it on my wishlist.

Getting a CLA seems like a good idea though.

A bit of background: I love my K1000, but it annoys me in two ways- first is that the metering seems rather buggy. Occasionally when I pick it up first time in the day it will under-meter (like, in bulb mode at 100 it shows less than full). Then, after a few minutes of sitting around with the lens cap off it will "snap" into full power and meter accurately for a while (at least the rest of the day, sometimes the next few days). This behavior is consistent even when I switch to a fresh battery, and whether I have the shutter cocked or not. Any ideas?

The second thing is that I like to do multiple exposures a lot. This works on the K1000 by using the film release button while cocking the shutter, but in the end it throws the spacing all off (which really confuses 1-hour photo scanning machines) and wastes film. Is there a similar pentax film camera that is built for multiple exposures? I'd like something with similar build quality (tank-like, but not huge).

A couple from Sydney; K1000, M 50 1.7, HP5.

I love the water stains on the last one. That said I can't wait until I'm equipped to do my own development.

I wanted to get into film and I wanted to do it cheap. That's one reason I love mine. The other is that I do as much as I can manually (not exposure yet though), and with my K20D I found myself having to work around the way the camera was designed in order to do so- manual is not always simpler. The K1000 it is all I want in terms of features and nothing I don't want, if you get me. It not only allows but enables and forces me to decide how things are done, and in the process learn as much as I can from taking each photograph.

Ha! That's fine. Mozart is my #2; Rossini is great too, but harder to like after 2.5 hours.

I just started with film two months ago, I only have a K1000. Can't imagine why I'd need anything else, honestly.

inflation calculator says that the $165 K1000 would be $617 today. Interesting to think about what you can get now for the same value.

Thanks for the input! I did minimal PP to these (obviously) and I am on the fence about the color cast. I think it adds a dynamic to some and is distracting in others.

I'm a film newbie though, so I'm wondering if the color cast is just a product of the scanner or if it is inherent to the film. I know a lot of older b&w prints have different color casts, but I'm not sure whether it's the print paper or film emulsion doing it.

Finally got these scanned from over a month ago (too busy with business travel =/). These are from the first two rolls of film I've shot switching over from digital. I think I'm hooked.

These were all taken with the K1000 and the M 50mm 1.7 (it's hard to believe my favorite lens was only $40). The first and third are Neopan 400 and the middle is HP5

That's certainly true, but data corruption and storage media failure are much more likely than any of those events.
