Item for Sale
Pentax-A 50 mm f/1.2

Asking Price
350.00 USD

Item Location
Iowa City, IA (United States)

Item Description
For sale is a Pentax-A 50 mm f/1.2 lens that I purchased last year from an eBay seller in India. I purchased the lens for $600 but was dismayed to find out that the lens was missing a connector (see photo of lens bottom) and thus would not work as an A lens unless I got it fixed. He claimed it should work fine and I decided to drop the matter and keep it the way it was.

Instead of doing this I wanted to offer it up here for someone who either wants to fix it themselves if they have the know how to do so or wants to incur the extra expense of fixing the lens. This extra expense is reflected in the reduced price I am asking for it, which is less than the Pentax-K version generally is listed for. It works fine with the green button metering on my K-3 or K-5 bodies but I haven't been using it much and would like it to go to a good home where it can be put into proper use.

Also attached is a shot I took with the lens last summer. I have not used it much since, but if you would like more test shots before purchasing just tell me what you would like me to shoot.

K3 vs. Df

I'm not that surprised that the DF is that much better than the K-3 at that high of ISO levels. The DF (and D4) is better than a lot of full frame cameras when it gets that high, whereas K-3 seems to be about average for current APS-C crop at ISO 3200+. If there's a reason to buy the camera, besides the retro looks and compatibility with old Nikon lenses, it's that you can get that class leading high ISO performance for less than $3,000.

Still, for me, the DF in this incarnation is a miss, even though a lot of things about it appeal to me more than the other Nikon full frame cameras out now (which is why it's selling well, I imagine, despite being polarizing). If it had a great viewfinder they'd probably have got me with it, despite some other quibbles I have with it, such as it having a 1/4000 shutter.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on it, though! A part of me certainly wishes I had the best of both worlds like you do :)

K3 or Canon 6d - That is the question

I'm not sure if the Canon 6D would be that much better shooting at low light given that you have the DA* 55 f/1.4. The K-3 also strikes me as the better all around body, especially for the price. The K-5IIs is also very good and much cheaper than both. Also, if you consider another system, the Fuji X-E2 looks pretty good and Fuji has some great lenses out right now.

This said, if you're looking for a reason to jump to Canon (particularly full frame) you're right that the event of the broken body is a good time to do it. I've heard good things from my Canon using friends who own the 6D. And if you're going to be using one f/4 zoom all the time the 6D with the 24-105L would be better than the Pentax option if size is not a concern to you.

Interview with Chief Sales & Marketing Officer / Ricoh Imaging Japan

I own both the K5IIs and the K3. The K-3 files might need more tweaking due to file size and more apparent noise at high ISOs, but besides this the K-3 is the better camera in almost every regard (and the K-5IIs is still one of the better APS-C cameras all things considered).

Interview with Chief Sales & Marketing Officer / Ricoh Imaging Japan

Ah the Japanese executive translated interview -- nothing better for starting off thinking you know what they are planning before you are led through a maze of cultural references and non-denial denials into questioning your own existence. What is real?! Am I real? Do I like baseball? Fullframe?

My take based on this interview and others:

They're still doing fullframe (I think), they're just dithering on what they should focus their resources on first. He is correct that this is a challenge: APS-C system still needs some holes filled, Q has a loyal following but has a lot of room to grow. The 645D is obviously growing long in the tooth. The GR also could use a slight update with a few tweaks to keep up with competitors (like adding Wi-Fi). I wonder what other focal length they are thinking? I am guessing based on GXR history they would go with 50 mm.

This said, I think they just need to bite the bullet and get FF out. The lens rollout for that thing is going to be slow so they need to get the buy in while there still is buy in to get. Just stick a FF sensor in the K-3 and let us go at it! Also, as someone else noted, once they release it we can finally start focusing on other things.

I am, however, feeling less confident after this interview about my thinking that FF would be out in late 2014. What do you think monochrome? You're the eternal optimist here.

Besides fullframe, I actually think Ricoh has a lot of things going for it. They had a good year this year, the camera division appears to be doing well considering a tough camera market, and I think they have a lot of options going forward. The amount of mounts will be challenging but I think it could turn out to be a strength.

First look at Sony's A7r FF mirorless body

I know just where I want to use that camera!

You Tube

In my mind Sony is filling a nice niche with these cameras. Going to give this one some serious consideration, although I think as it will be new tech it will be best to watch user and professional reviews carefully before buying. Would also give the adapter makers some chance to make some suitable adapters for the new A7's. I am hoping at the best it will be similar to the manual focus experience on film but finally achieved on digital.

2014 indeed will be an interesting year for full frame and cameras in general. On the Pentax front I am interested to see what else Ricoh will have up its sleeve for APS-C and maybe maybe maybe even FF. New medium format cameras? Large sensor compacts are getting better and better. M4/3 and APS-C aren't dying off despite FF becoming more affordable-- they'll just need to keep being more creative with their offerings. Canon and Nikon have been sort of silent this year, which probably means they'll have some great stuff ready for next year (Canon 7D Mk II and Nikon D400?). Fuji X has some interesting stuff coming, too.

It really feels like the industry is maturing to a point where there are so many great options from everyone.

I am not surprised to see Pentax contract out the WiFi solution to a third party. Although I wanted WiFi I was dubious that there was someone on the Pentax team who was going to crank out some awesome app for iOS and Android, and continually update it, etc. Just based on the team's history software development has not been one of their strengths (whereas they have shown a great aptitude for ergonomic design as a persistent strength for example)

Flucard may just have given Pentax the most appealing bid as a third party provider, and this way the apps already exist.

Smarter focus tracking with Real-Time Scene Analysis and SAFOX 11

I saw another funny example of this recently when the Olympus OMD EM-1 came out. They said something to the effect of "users of 4/3 glass on the E-5 will be disappointed with the AF performance of these lenses on the EM-1." They were soon cowed into admitting that this was not based on side by side testing, it was actually on the reviewer's recollection of shooting with an E-5.

There might be some institutional bias toward the big two at Dpreview, but I think more often than not with them their review mistakes are just laziness, or as you said dilettantism, which of course would just let that bias slip in even easier where it exists. Those random passive aggressive remarks do seem to be a trademark of some of their work: "Well it sure would have been a nice camera if..."

With all this said, I wouldn't be that surprised if the AF on the K-3 isn't much faster than its K-5 brethren. Probably a bit snappier and more responsive, but not a ton faster. There are physical limitations of the SDM motors for example, and I imagine if they were using a review body Dpreview was talking about the DC motor in the 18-135.

I have photographed sports (in terrible lighting conditions) with all of the Pentax bodies from the K20D through the K-5 (including the K-30, not including the K-50). Things have gotten much better since the K20D days, but the focus tracking based on color with the additional focus points will likely be the biggest boon for sports shooters, along with the big buffer for continuous spray and pray shooting. The camera getting confused and choosing the guy in the wrong jersey in a crowd has resulted in a lot of the missed shots I have had previously. It looks like they already grouped the AF points with this in mind, but I hope there are some options for grouping AF points like in the K-30.

I'm also excited to see if the multi-pattern AWB can help with the atrocious color balance issues you can get with high school sports lighting. I swear it sometimes looks like the players are playing in several different dimly lit gyms after I get home and look at the photos

These specs should hold up well even when the Canon 7d Mark II come out next year.

Ironically it's Safox 11 that finally pushes us above 11-AF points.

Fun times Pentax users. Looking forward to see how this guy performs. I do have a birthday coming up and I have a lot of love for myself ;)

K-3 pictures: front, side and back (aka it definitely is a headphone jack)

The "bulge" does seem a bit excessive just to add a headphone jack, I think you're right about that. But thinking in terms of the whole structure of the camera maybe it was added in order to add a headphone jack while also providing room for something else. They did cram an extra memory card slot in, for example, and the form factor appears to be close to the K-5 so they might have been needing a way to create more space without making the camera a great deal larger.

Good points. I think in terms of video quality and output the K-5 was better, but with Prime M the K-30 had AF in video and manual control over exposure. My main point was that I am hoping the video on the K-3 will be another area where you don't have to compromise one area of performance to gain somewhere else. Autofocus is another good example of this, potentially.

This is what will make it the ultimate lens adapter camera, a good niche that Sony already has capitalized on as you well know. Only Fuji and M43 really compete with them here, and this should give them a leg up.

I am less convinced it will improve on existing FF options as far as AF lenses go, at least at first. Like the previous NEX cameras I think this will take some time to fill their lens lineup.

We will have to wait on specs (and images) before a final verdict, but this camera to me seems to do a good job of bringing together some good Pentax APS-C features into one camera, as a flagship should.

Want best video from Pentax? You don't have to choose a K-01 or K-30 over a K-5II anymore.
Want good AF? I am guessing this will combine the best of K-30 action shooting plus K-5ii low light shooting plus other advancements.
Want best image quality for Pentax? This camera should have that, at least in terms of pure resolution.

The video additions appeal to me as an occasional photojournalist, the dual card slots for the aforementioned wedding photography, plus other possible uses (such as a Raw on one Jpg on the other)

Plus: dual slot memory card, headphone jack, possibly other features like improved rear screen and OVF, etc. All for less of a starting price than the K-5 or K-7. Really the only other thing I could ask for at this point is WiFi and a full frame sensor. An articulating screen would also be nice but not a deal breaker.

As for the person who is switching to EM1 that looks to be a great camera. Olympus CAF is super fast and you can't beat its performance to size ratio at the moment. Great lenses, too! The K-3 on the other hand will likely have much better tracking AF, better pure IQ, and an OVF. Get what works for you :)

Nail in the coffin for Pentax full frame?

I look at it the other way, I'd say it pressures them to release one even more. Either that or totally commit to APS-C and show us something we haven't seen.

It could peel off some Pentax users, not sure how many, but definitely some. But I am just going to ballpark guess the price of these rumored Sony cameras: $2,000 for the "cheap" 24 mp model and $3,000 or so for the 36 mp model. If I'm right, that's a lot of money to pay for a camera that can't autofocus my FA Limiteds. I would also expect a FF Pentax to benefit from the technology being put into the K-3, plus it would likely feature a nice OVF and fit the form factor of the camera better.

Now if Pentax doesn't come out with FF next year, I could see picking one of these up as a way to guarantee that I can use my K-mount lenses into the future, and then use the Sony E-Mount FF primarily with the Zeiss lenses that are made for it. But I'd still likely keep all my Pentax cameras to allow the autofocus option for my Pentax lenses as well.

I think the company these cameras really should worry is Leica. While $3,000 looks like a lot compared to a K-5II, it looks like peanuts compared to a Leica M240, which can't autofocus anyway. This could finally be the Bessa or Ikon cost range for digital M-mount lens users.

The flip screen on the OMD EM5 is actually fairly limited in functional range: you can go up and down but not left or right. I don't use it that much, but I have used it a few times to get shots that would have been difficult otherwise.

Macro is an obvious use for flip screens, but one that people overlook is using it for framing for wide angle crowd shots.

Here's a practical example I got as a front page of a newspaper for Black Friday. I wanted to show all of the crazy lines at the local Target but to do that I had to get behind a display where my vision of the whole scene was blocked. So I had to raise my camera (K20D and 16-45 f/4 at the time) above the display and take a photo of what I thought was there, chimp, then retry. With an articulated screen I could have framed much more precisely. Holding your camera up high with a wide angle is a great method for showing more of a crowd off (say at a political event) if you can't reach a higher vantage point in any other way.

If they can add an articulated screen while keeping it weather sealed I think it would be a welcome addition. Not a make or break one, though, for me personally.

K-3 Specs leaked - 24MP APS-C

Whether or not RiceHIgh made this up, which is always possible, these specs are actually pretty close to what I was expecting for the next step above the K-5 IIs. A good improvement in several areas, but still fairly conservative in terms of additional features. Also if there really are more than 11-focus points I'll be curious to see how many of them are crosstype or f/2.8 sensitivity like the K-5 IIs AF system is. If they can just combine the K-30 expanded focus continual focus feature with the low light improvements of the K-5 II it will be a very nice combo.

If the rumors start saying the camera has built in Wi-Fi, 4000K video, double SD memory card slots, or of course, a full frame sensor, I'll start getting suspicious :)

It'll depend on the specs but I might buy one of these FF NEX cameras just to mount my Pentax lenses on for a bit, then sell it when and if Pentax ever unveils their FF camera. If Sony ever comes out with some nice native lenses for it even better.

It'll be nice to take the pressure off of waiting for Pentax to come out with whatever exactly it is that they're working on, be it APS-C or FF. Plus I love that I now have a FF option where I don't have to mutilate (well, that may be a bit harsh. How about, manipulate) my lenses to use them.

Plus! If Pentax should ever leave the K-mount, these lenses will still have some life in them. Yes!

I think this camera will be like the current E-mount system: not many great lenses made by Sony for it, but beloved by the premium lens adapter crowd. This will somewhat hurt Pentax until they come out with FF, but I think the really vulnerable company is Leica. $3,000 is a lot for most people for a camera that won't autofocus with legacy lenses, but it's cheap for many M mount owners.

I've always liked how Olympus has declared a "Pro" line for their cameras even though they use 4/3 size sensors-- they did the same thing with the E-3 and E-5, which were in ways inferior to the K-7 and K-5 respectively. I've thought that the main problem with Pentax as a brand is they have had trouble deciding what they want to be and who they want to be for. If Pentax declared their next camera a flagship, gave it pro service, and brought out some new "Pro" lenses, I think they'd get some interest even if the flagship was APS-C.

Of course, this new Olympus camera is getting flak from commenters for being priced into the lower range of the cheap FF territory, so maybe there's no winning with people?

As someone who has dipped my toe into the M4/3 waters, this certainly is a tempting camera, and looks to improve on a lot of the minor quibbles I had with the EM5. Reminds me a bit of a smaller K-5.
