K10D Firmware 1.3 Debug Mode Unleashed!

Ok,
After a lot of frustration, and thinking about really hating the focus on my K10d, I downloaded the debug mode, and it worked surprisingly well.
One note: While it seemed to download ok on my vista laptop, It refused to perform the required tasks.
But when I performed the exact same steps with my XP desktop it worked perfectly.
Now my situation is a little unique, I almost exclusively use only the da35 macro, and most of the time I shoot exterior bulidings and landscapes @ f5.6-f8.0 , and I almost always shoot manual focus. At these distances focus isn't that critical.
Occasionally I do like to take shots of my family, and at these times the focus was really frustrating.
Ok, now I have one more question,
The visually aquired focus on the focus screen is also off by a noticable amount, Has anyone tried to do the actual physical adjustment to correct this?
I have no intention of ever sending the camera in for Pentax service.
Incidentally The adjustment I settled on for the DA35 was +130.
I haven't decided yet on whether to leave the camera in DeBug mode or not.
Actually the only reason I could see to switch it back is if I were going to sell or trade it in.

I have an image taken with a K100D and the 10-17mm fisheye. that I had printed 20x30 that looks very good. but if you look at it very close you can see very minor digital artifacts.
I printed some 12x17" 6mp (from a K100D) On my new IPF5100 that to my eye are impossible to distinguish from film.
I'm expecting that images from my 10mp K10d will be excellent when printed at 17x25"
However I wouldn't expect anthing coming from any point and shoot camera (tiny sensor) to look very good reguardless of how many Megapixels. An 8x10 would be the best I would expect. Megapixels mean nothing unless you have the resolving power of good glass, and a decent sized sensor for the pixels to live on.

Well,
I've almost self banned myself. I only read and post on the "printing" forum section
At some point it just seemed like reading the pentax forum section was a waste of time.
Still, I applaude your efforts.

I purchased the Canon IPF5100
from ITsupplies.com
After 500 dollar epson trade in it was 849 dollars and free shipping. and you get 3 free rolls of your choice of canon printing media.
canonipf home
is the place I would recomend you go to learn all you can about about the printer.
Also you will find an in depth review of the IPF series printers at luminous landscape
be sure and read the newest review about the IPF 6100 because it most closely matches the 5100.
and don't be deceived about the size/ weight of the printer. it's about 50% larger than the epson 3800, and does in fact weigh about 120 lbs.
I would choose this printer primarily if you intend to print on matt, and fine art paper surfaces.
the blacks on watercolor type surfaces are absolutely perfect.
Thats it for now,

I routinely see questions about the megapixels needed to print at a given size.
In the past I've done tests by having large prints done at sam's club. the problem with that approach is that you are limited to a file size of 6mb. I finally succumbed to my desires, and bought "real" photo printer. I've spent all of my spare time the last 3 days setting up my new canon ipf 5100 17" printer, and the results are way better than anything I've received from a local lab.
I've been doing some test prints on a variety of paper, using some older images from a classic car show. The images were all taken with a K100D shot as jpegs.
Printed from photoshop. and printed as 11x17's . I'm confident that the images I'm making with my K10d will be excellent when printed at 17x25.
I believe that with my K10d, and a few sharp lenses, and my new printer I have all the tools I need to produce stunning fine art prints. From here on out it's about mastering skills, not about aquiring equiptment.

I've been too busy taking pictures with my new DA35 ltd to spend a lot of time bragging about it, but it would certainly be the lens I would keep if I could only keep one.
Next week I'm going on vacation at the Black canyon of the Gunnison National Park in Colorado.
I'm going to take My 10-17mm fisheye zoom, my Da35mm ltd, and my newly aquired Tamron 90mm sp. I might take the da50-200, but I havent decided on it.
I expect to have the 35mm on the camera 90% of the time, and the other lenses will share the other 10%

Ok,
It works now,
but I'm not sure that I did anything to fix it.
One small but interesting note:
the lens is and F1:2.5, and the camera registers an f1:2.4 as the max. aperature

It is a K/A mount (with contacts)
And the tabs are locked in the appropriate locations.
I guess that means it's the mount that's screwed up.
I'll monkey around with it and see if I can make it work.
I'm sure I could turn it into a manual only/stopdown metering lens, But it would be nice if I could make it fully functional.

Tamron adaptall macro help needed:

Hi All,
I know someone here wil be able to answer my question.
I just picked up a used Tamron 90mm sp 1:2 macro adaptal mount.
And the camera absolutely refuses to allow the lens to stop down.
It also doesn't recognize the aperature the lens is set for.
First let me say that It's not an "enable aperature ring" problem. I have other manual focus "A" lenses and they work fine.
I've removed the adaptall adapter and inspected it, and re-assembled it a couple of times, and can't find a problem or make it work.
The only way I can make it stop down is to use the old trick of partially detaching the lens, then it works fine with the aperature ring, in full auto exposure mode.
The lens is indeed very sharp (I knew it would be), and I really want it to be a keeper. So before I take it back to the shop and see if the guy there knows what the problem is, and possibly excange it, I thought I would let you guys have a try.
Thanks in advance for any possible help you can give me.

Ok,
Maybe not, But I don't see my new DA35 macro leaving my K10D for quite some time.
Well It is my first Limited lens, and I suppose I could see myself owning a DA70 Ltd.
While I wouldn't say the DA35 is dimutive it's not much bigger than the lens it replaces, the 50/2.0A.
Well that's about it for now. I just thought maybe I would start a new DA35 Thread.

Da Lens Prices ! Low Low Low

I purchased the DA 35 macro from Henrys this morning,
Canadian price is 449--, current US price 445-- 12 dollars shipping.
Budda, thanks for the heads up on them being in stock, yes thier website says "Preorder now", but when I called the sales rep said that yes in fact they were in stock, and was happy to take my order. No offence to prodigital 2000, but given the choice I would prefer to order over the phone and avoid the E-bay experience whenever possible. Calumet was my 2nd choice but they were at 519-- Actually I was prepared to buy from Calumet 2 months ago when they were listed as available in "5days", but when that changed to "we don't know when" I canceled my Pre-order.
since I've shot with nothing but my vintage 50mm 2.0 A lens for the last 2months, It's concievable that the DA 35 might never leave camera once it's mounted.
My current passion is shooting some horizontal, but mostly vertically stiched panoramas This is my dream lens.

K20D + Lenses: Please critique my game plan

First let me say that I don't want to sound patronizing,
But as excited as you are about the new K20D You need to remember that a lot of people are not satisfied with thier first camera (It can be for a lot of reasons) and move on to a different brand. I expect you will be happy with the K20D. But here is what I think you should do: before investing in a lot of expensive glass I would recommend that you spend some time (maybe 2 weeks)shooting with a "plain" prime lens. I'd recomend the pentax 50 2.0 A.
It's dirt cheap, but can produce excellent images. You will learn alot about the camera, and it will give you a point of perspective from which to judge your future lens purchases.
I'm in the waiting mode to see if the new DA35mm macro is going to hit the shelves anytime soon, and went out sunday afternoon with just the 50mm and below is an example of what it can do:

Adapter from Canon FL/FD mount to Pentax?

It is truely a shame that all that vintage canon glass is out there setting on shelves.
But unfortunatly it is pretty much unusable.
the problem is that the distance from the rear lens flange to the film is shorter than any camera currently in production.
In order to use old FD lenses on any modern camera body of any brand you would have to be able to insert the lens deeper into the body than the lens rear flange will allow.
I've done the research, and I believe it's simply impossible.
There are however adapters that will allow the use of vintage pentax lenses on newer canon eos bodys. and some people have had limited success with nikon lenses on pentax bodies, but from my personal experiments I wouldn't reccomend it.

Lens Repair

Can you actually see the damaged portion on the threads?
fwiw a Tap puts threads on the inside of a hole, a Die puts threads on the outside of stud, or in your case lens mount.
If you could find the proper die (unlikely) It its possible that you could chase the threads and restore them.
If you can actually see the damaged threads, you could (since it's probably aluminum) use a very sharp "v" pointed tool to hand scrape out the damaged portion of the thread
but first make sure that's really the problem

What type of grease for Takumar focus ring?
Posted By Levi

I "rebuilt" a Nikon 105mm lens once along time ago.
I picked it up really cheap, possibly because the focus was very stiff.
because it was so cheap I wasn't afraid to dissasemble it.
After carefully cleaning all the existing grease off I used a modest ammount of clear silicon grease. It's available in small squeeze tubes. It's very stable and won't "break down" or dry out for a long time. It worked well for me.
Now, here's a note of caution:
The when I did mine, the lens unscrewed very easily, but it was "nearly" impossible to to get the focus threads on the two halves to re-engage. In fact after about 1/2 an hour I was certain that it couldn't be done, or that I had screwed it up some how. Well eventually I discovered that when I got it perfectly aligned that almost fell back together. Unfortunately it was "10 start thread" and it took about 5 tries before I choose the correct starting point so that the infinity mark wound up in the correct spot on the barrel. Of course on each successive try it got a little easier. In the end I had a perfectly functioning lens.

This is a little off topic but I like to play with legos (hey I'm only 49)
So I'm posting this to show what can be done with a really wide angle macro
the 10-17 fisheye. Ok, it's not really a true macro, but you get the picture.

I don't think It will have a focus limiter, and this is why:
the shorter the focal length of a lens the less distance the lens will need to move in order to acheive 1:1 mag. Somewhere I saw a photo of the new da 35 macro fully extended, and it's not that long.
As for the lego thing, it would work very good.
I've used my 10-17 fisheye to shoot legos the problem is that I get so close sometimes that the front lens element will amost touch the "lego people"
It does give a very interesting perspective.

Well I have mine pre ordered from Calumet, it was "supposed" to arrive with the pentax shipment they received yesterday, but When I called to check they said it wasn't in the shipment, and were not shure exactly when they would arrive. maybe a few days, or a week or two is my guess
Once I decided to part with the money, I realllllly want it.
