I love hoot owls of all kinds great shot please keep them coming. Once had a calendar with a photo of a young lady on the front and titled 'HOOTERS LATEST CALENDAR' (expecting a bunch of photos of skimpily clad young ladies in HOOTERS outfits) when I opened it each month had a picture of Hoot Owl and not girls. Wish I had saved it.

Shooting in raw

mikesbike, I shoot mainly in M mode because I have 3 takumar lenses, 55 1.8, 85 1.9, 135 3.5 (left over from film days) and 2 DA L kit lenses 18-55 and 50-200. Don't use the DA L 18 to 55 much because of the 55 tak. Use 50-200 a lot for long shots. There is so much to learn with the K5, I bought it a couple years ago because it got some very good reviews on line and the shutter count was 1035 or maybe 1037. Was in mint condition and have been loving it ever since, I retired my 71 Spotmatic, shes an old girl but still takes great pics. I'm sure I will bring her out again, who knows. Thanks for your great advice above, have saved it to word and will print it out to study and play with the K5.

Went to your Flickr page and looked at your work, you do great work with a camera, hope someday I can get close to that quality. Really liked the b&w of the old mill, also the olive, the eggs, the potato masher (?) what a wonderful idea would have never though of taking pictures of such common things or thought of them as art. Please keep them coming I really enjoy your work.

Not sure if this is the place for this thread but here goes. This morning was watching the Senate hearings on the new nominee to the Supreme Court with the little woman when she asked "Who are those people sitting on the floor? I told her they were photographers don't know who they work for. What I would like to know is what type of lenses are these people using? They look enormous anyone got any idea about or why one would need such a large lens for such close work? Thanks to all.

Ok new to the digital world, I know what jpg is but have no idea what raw is or why I should shoot this way. Seems like to me (sounds like an assumption, never good) that one shoots in raw and then converts the image to jpg when saving the image. I know nothing about raw and not a lot about digital photography or even film photography, not a photo techno I just like taking pictures and sometimes actually capture some good ones. I have not been able to find a thread explaining what raw is, or why I should shoot this way. Please don't tear my head off I don't live photography but do love to take pictures. Any and all help is greatly appreciated, even if you do tear off part of my head. Please leave enough for my wife to swing a skillet at.

Well as I have said numerous times, great advice, great information, and great service. You guys are the best. Next question is why do I want this function on, and why not just leave it off? I can normally look at the pic and see if it is too bright (over exposed) or too dark (under exposed) or is totally black, forgot to remove lens cap. ALL, help and advice is greatly appreciated.

Last year I submitted thread in which I talked of negative types of color splotches (?) showing up on the K5 LCD screen during playback. Of course you all wanted pictures which I didnt have. Awhile after I submitted the thread the problem went away and camera worked fine. The dreaded splotches are back so took a couple of pictures with my cell phone,, that I have attached. Anyone got any ideas?
