k200d viewfinder broken/black, pictures overexposed, help??

Thank you everyone! I wish it were easier to find pictures of the guts of cameras, and I would have spent a lot fewer hours on this! Finally I was watching a youtube video on how to clean the sensor, and it led me to something else, where I saw the mirror pop down...and then I realized it WAS stuck up there! Before that I thought maybe it was entirely missing or something.

So I took the lens off, manually flipped the mirror down, took a picture, had it stick again, so just manually flipped it down and took several more pictures...and it appears to be fixed!!

k200d viewfinder broken/black, pictures overexposed, help??

More info: It seems like the images are closer to being normal now, just out of focus. The shutter appears to be working properly and the cap is off (duh) and the pictures don't have any color distortion or anything. Oh, and the camera hasn't been through any rough handling lately. I was at the beach but it wasn't raining or near any water spray (I've had it get wet from waterfalls and wave spray before with no problems at all months/years ago). The problem came on very suddenly.

k200d viewfinder broken/black, pictures overexposed, help??

I'm kind of freaking out since I love my k200d despite not knowing *that* much about dslr's, and since this is our last day of vacation and I don't want to miss taking pictures!

I'm really confused about what's going on. I've just read the whole k200d manual and understand a lot more than I did, but not enough to have a clue on this problem.

I was taking pictures and everything was ideal! Then suddenly the viewfinder went black. Maybe I bumped a button or something as I put my camera down to my side for a sec? At first I thought the shutter was stuck closed. So I tried turning it off and on again, and replacing the batteries. I tried looking through settings and couldn't find any clues, and I reset everything to factory defaults. Still nothing is working!

The displays still work in the viewfinder. On auto-focus the in-focus icon blinks but never goes solid, as do the aperture value and shutter speed displays. The capture button does not work in auto-focus mode but does work in manual mode. All the pictures turn out completely over-exposed no matter how I try to adjust things, including putting it on Auto Picture.

Does anyone have any idea what's going on or what I can do about it? I can try to provide more info if that'll help at all. Thank you so much!!

Pentax K200D kit on Amazon $536 with free shipping after rebate (gold box trick)

Too sleepy to repost the tutorial type thing I wrote up but maybe if you do a search on my name you'll find it? I don't have too many posts. I think I posted it vs. just PM'd. If you can't find it post here and I'll try to find it for you when I'm more awake. It's exactly what I did and it worked perfectly for me after a day or two of being patient.

That's even a bit better than the deal I got! $643 in Gold Box. I wrote up a little description of how I got it in my Gold Box and posted it somewhere here I think. I can repeat that if anyone wants.

The 30 day price drop thing probably doesn't help if it was in Gold Box though you think? If it does please let me know ASAP as I think I have just a couple days left on the 30 days.

First I started a whole new account so that I wouldn't have to play around with deleting my history.

Then I said I own, and rated 5 stars, the battery grip

http://www.amazon.com/Pentax-DBG3-Ba...2881812&sr=8-6

And this k200d specific photography book http://www.amazon.com/Magic-Lantern-...881812&sr=8-10

Then I put the k200d kit in my cart overnight. Actually ended up being 2 nights.

I went through the recomendations area and clicked "not interested" on all the stupid stuff they had listed like the batteries and SD cards, but I left up the lenses and flash etc. I don't know at all if that step is necessary or not.

Then I just obsessively checked my gold box. I went out, I think it was the third day. In the morning when I checked it wasn't there, but then I rechecked when I got back in the afternoon and it was there!

I also called customer service because I was not able to get the Amazon Prime free trial on my new account. I told them I had something in my Gold box i wanted on one account but I wanted the free shipping from the other account. So they activated the free Amazon Prime trial on my new account also!

I believe the same strategy should work for whatever you want. Start from scratch (you can just delete stuff so you don't have to have a new account each time), rate at least two items as 5 stars saying you own them. Make sure the items are *very* specific to the item you actually want to buy. Put the item you want in your cart, and wait.

I got my k200d from amazon.com (directly, still disputing with dbroth) and was able to get it for $643.11 and it did come with the AL II lens! To get it that cheap you have to be willing to wait a couple days, and play around trying to get it into your Gold Box for the 5% discount. I can give further instructions on what I did if anyone wants.

Yeah it's crazy all the scammers out there. The place I had trouble with was DBROTH not DeBroth. And I'm not sure how much trouble I actually had with them vs. just hearing about trouble other people had and having trouble getting out of it myself lol.

The $643.11 is if you are able to get it into your Gold Box picks, so it is an additional 5% off. It took me a couple of days of trying, but I think it was worth it. I always love getting the best deal possible.

I basically followed this: A step by step guide to order the Canon 40D {with kit lens} from Amazon's Gold Box Quick Picks for $1073.45 {no tax for most, and free shipping} YMMV - *************** Forums which gives instructions for another camera. For the k200d, I said "I own" the k200d battery grip and a k200d specific photography tutorial type book, and rated them both 5 stars (I'll go back and undo that so as not to skew the reviews as soon as my camera arrives).

Then I put the K200d in my cart overnight. I think I actually left it there two nights since I first opened the account late Sunday night. I also went through and marked "not interested" on all the stupid stuff under recommendations. I got rid of batteries and SD cards mostly, and left up the lenses, filters and stuff. I'm not sure if that made a difference.

The weird thing is I'm pretty sure I didn't see the k200d in my Gold Box this morning, but I did when I got home this afternoon.

There are more tips on that thread I linked an I might be able to answer more questions if anyone wants me to try.

I wanted to mention something else here if there is anyone still looking to buy the k200d. Maybe I should start a new thread to make sure everyone sees it? I am in the process of ordering the body with lens kit from Amazon (directly) right now for $643.11, with free two day shipping!

It takes a little effort but I think I can explain. If anyone wants me to, just let me know.

Shutterpuppy:

No they didn't send me an email to confirm my order. In fact they didn't send me anything! I got the initial confirmation from amazon, and that's it. It said it was projected to ship by the 28th or 29th. By the 30th I hadn't heard anything at all so I started looking into it.

First I tried to see if I could find out anything through Amazon, and they didn't have any new information. Then I tried to contact DBROTH but their website doesn't exist anymore.

That's when I googled them and found all the reports of them being a scam. So I called Amazon to try to cancel my order. They said I had to contact DBROTH to cancel, though of course there was no way for me to do that other than try to email them, and after all the reports of people being bullied and stuff I didn't want to contact them directly anyway.

Especially since Amazon told me that if I cancelled the order after it was shipped, DBROTH had every right to charge me a 15% restocking fee (over $100) even if all I did was return to sender completely unopened!!

So I called my bank and they said to dispute the charges and return to sender. I spoke with two different customer service reps and they were both very sympathetic so I'm really hopeful that will work.

Well I'm even starting to wonder about Amazon. Did I already say that earlier? They were out of stock when I went to order it so I ordered from an Amazon partner, DBROTH. A couple days after I ordered, their website had gone *poof* and I googled them and found a ton of websites with people saying they ship gray market products and all sorts of other stuff.

I tried to cancel with Amazon and they told me I had to work directly with DBROTH. Which of course I didn't want to do after hearing about how they bully people who contact them, plus the only way was an email link through amazon. They said their A-Z guarentee would protect me if it was "not as advertised". But how would I ever be confident I would even KNOW if it was the right product??

Now I am planning to refuse, return to sender and dispute it with my bank. But it makes me angry that Amazon doesn't care at all who they do business with as a partner, and doesn't protect their customers from unreputable places. (I also noticed the address of DBROTH is in Brooklyn, surprise surprise).

I am waiting to buy directly through Amazon this time. I think I will open a new account so they don't try to give DBROTH my new credit card number or something.

I went to Fry's Saturday and had a similar experience. Ours had some Pentax lenses but no bodies. The clueless employee actually tried to tell us that Pentax didn't exist anymore except lenses lol, like they had been sold and have a new name or something.

Thanks for all the ideas! I have a 2gb and a 128mb back from my point and shoot days, which I know isn't going to get me far in RAW format on the k200d.

Ankit I had to do a double take to see if I'd already posted. I'm also going on a week or so long trip to Alaska late June/early July. What area will you be in?

Morfic thanks so much! I actually went back and deleted my post you were referring to because when I re-read I realized that I clicked on the wrong thread to reply to and it was totally off topic for this thread. :o

Someone on the first thread I linked, https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/pentax-dslr-discussion/28690-k200d-amazon.html said he ordered directly from amazon and got the AL II so I'm trying to ask if it specifically stated that or not.

If someone wants to delete or move these posts since I'm a bit embarrassed to have thread hijaked, please feel free.

I'm pretty new to the forum myself but I think there is a place for classifieds. I'll browse around and see if I can find it for you.

I bought through amazon from DBROTH but then I started reading all sorts of negative things about them. So I tried to cancel my order but couldn't, then found a round-about way around that. (PM me if you need details on that sort of issue from that seller or any other).

Now I started reading more and am even a little more confused. People are talking about the AL II lens being better? So I'm trying to figure out if the direct from amazon.com kit comes with that lens or another Amazon.com: Pentax K200D 10.2MP Digital SLR Camera with Shake Reduction 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 Lens: Camera & Photo

Does anyone know? Or better yet know of another place to get a similar deal with the best possible lens? Thanks!!

Thanks for the tip Adam67! Did it specify that it was the AL II in the link? Or did it look similar to the link I sent?

I was able to find a way around things to resolve the issue with the first one I ordered I hope, so now I'm trying to figure out who has the best price with the best kit lense.

Oh boy now I'm even more confused! I ordered the kit through amazon.com partner DBRoth and then started reading reviews everywhere saying they sell gray-market products and try to upsell and all that stuff. So I'm trying to cancel that order and get my money back (it says it's shipped, but they haven't actually charged my account yet either).

So I was going to get this: Amazon.com: Pentax K200D 10.2MP Digital SLR Camera with Shake Reduction 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 Lens: Camera & Photo instead. That's not the better lens though is it?

I just ordered the K200D, I can't wait!! $674.99 shipped through an amazon partner DBROTH, so I sure hope that makes it $574.99 after rebate (shipping price was built in). I could have gotten it for $662.03 directly from amazon but DBROTh has it shipping out May 28th to 29th which I figured was worth the extra $12 and change over Amazon's late June/early July ship-date (which would probably be too late for the trip we're taking also)

I'm still learning about dSLR and Pentax. I just purchased the K200D and am eagerly awaiting it's arrival!!

Just to let you know, check Amazon and I think you can pick up the kit for $674.99 shipped. After rebate that should make it $574.99

Amazon.com: Pentax K200D 10.2MP Digital SLR Camera with Shake Reduction 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 Lens: Electronics and on the upper right click on DBROTH to add to cart. You can also get it for $662.03 directly from amazon but I figured the extra $12.96 was totally worth it to have the camera arrive 3 - 4 weeks earlier.

Wow Ftpaddict thank you so much for your help!! I think that sounds like great advice. I think I'll get the kit lens to start with since it seems very economical and will give me something to start with. Then when I learn more about lenses I'm sure I'll find more than I could ever afford lol.

One thing I'm sure not complaining about is saving at least $200 off the best price I found anywhere on the canon XSI ($752 YMMV at BestBuy through tomorrow, check slickdeals for more info if anyone is interested or knows anyone who would be). I am feeling like the Pentax k200d is every bit as good as the xsi and better in several areas.

So you think the eneloops work well? That is so exciting because as it turns out we found a good deal on a set at costco a couple months ago so that means I'm already set for that! The guy at the camera store was pushing lithiums and I'd really rather just use what I've got. I should probably buy some more eneloops though so I'm not always running out.

Next I'm sure you'll see me asking for help in the accessories area hehe. Thanks again so much for the warm welcome and help!!

After much research I think I've decided on the k200d over the Canon xsi. Is Amazon the best place to buy the k200d for $662.03?

Amazon.com: Pentax K200D 10.2MP Digital SLR Camera with Shake Reduction 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 Lens: Electronics

I'm a total newbie to anything above a point and shoot. Would it probably be best to buy the kit or body plus lenses separately? Is there anything else I'm going to find I can't live without and should get now? Thanks for any help you can provide!

Please help, newbie with (probaby stupid) questions about k200d or others

I am a total newbie to DSLR cameras and I am feeling a little lost. I like to think I was pretty decent with my point and shoot Kodak easyshare but this is a whole new exciting world!

A friend of mine suggested the Canon XTI. I started researching some and found the XSI. Then I found the Pentax K200D. I am feeling very confused between the XSI and the K200D now, and wondering if there are other Pentax options I should also consider.

I'm looking for something that is not going to cost a fortune but also I won't want to replace in a year or two.

I mainly like to photograph nature scenes and am looking forward to learning more about waterfall photography. I am also hoping to use the camera for portraits and family "snapshots".

Of course obviously I need to go to a store and hold both cameras and see which feels better, but I can't exactly do that at 4am and I know I have a lot to learn besides that too hehe.

I really like the idea of the Pentax being weather resistant, more sturdy, having internal image stability and being a bit more affordable than the XSI.

I'm concerned that it may be a little difficult for my teeny tiny hands. Also with my Kodak I was used to using the Liveview and it'll be a learning curve to not have that. I am starting to gather that not using liveview is better even if it is available?

Also one thing I like about the Canon is I'm seeing a ton of cheap accessories for it on ebay. I have a feeling maybe I just don't know what to search for with the Pentax though. I know I will want a remote control, tripod, possibly filters once I learn more about them, and other stuff too. Are there certain accessories that will probably be able to be used regardless of manufacturer? Or what should I look for?

Thanks for any help and advice you can provide!!
