Meet the new flagship

What I don't understand - the mentioned improvement in the low ISO - I didn't know that there are any problems. Both K3 an K1 are doing an excellent job in low ISO.

Interesting would be real ISO Settings below 100 like 50 and 25.

Very interesting for me would be further improvements in high ISO Quality between 5000 and 25000.

How many lenses do you take when out photographing?

When I'm out just for fun than it is one lens 24-105.
When I'm going to concert 24-70 2.8 and 70.200 (when I got an accreditation)

When I'm on a photo-tour in a town or on holiday irix 11mm, 15-30, 24-70, 70-200 in a camera backpack - yes it is heavy and the strolling will last round about 3 hours. The 150-450 an a tripod in the car to take it with me when there is a need for.

Question about Pentax 60-250 lens.

He didn't ask explicit for regular use.

I said it is possible and I think it wouldn't damage the camera. I'm using a longer arca-swiss plate, I would never mount the camera directly with a 1/4 screw to a tripod,

To use it this way isn't the best solution, when I use the lens foot I have a better balance and less swinging of the system.

When trying to work on a more professional level, i would always mount the camera-lens system in balance to the tripod, and therefore using the foot.

I've used ist several times on a good tripod, using the body in the arca-swiss mount, because the foor was at home. It works fine, but swings more. But if the shake reduktion is on it work stille fine.

I would prefer the foot, but it works the other way round. With an arca-swiss plate the Body ist strong enough even to hold the 150-450 (forgotten the arca-plate for the lens) - it works, but mounted with the lens it works much better.

A way to measure batteries or chargers?
Posted By joergens.mi

Have a look at the Voltage. It should charge up 8.4 Volts.
And the number of shoots is not as bad as you think. You have your way to take photos, therefore the number you can take is typically for you. If a battery will have diverge more than 20 % from your typical count, it will be bad or not fully charged.
My charger shows me the mAH put to the battery and the Voltage.

The voltage of the battery can be seen in the exif Data of a picture. Therefore you can measure it, by taking a photo after charging. You can get the shutdown voltage if you look at the last picture before the camera shut down.

The K1 adds the coordinates and direction automatically. The K3 adds it automatically if the GPS Unit is mounted and switched on. External gps coordiantes can be added with the exif tools.

Now that the new APS-C flagship is coming, anyone have thoughts for K-1 I replacement

Simply sampled wishes from different forums, but only the wishes I'm interested in.

* Improvement in reducing the noise. The noise is already very good, but for concert photography at "night" you can afford more. Possibly by combining pixels
* The pixel count must not be increased
* Fast memory transfer to the cards, 25 MB / sec are clearly too little (100 MB / sec minimum). As fast as the fastest SD XC or faster
* Buffer for continuous shooting for at least 50 frames in Raw without pause

* A purely electronic shutter option for the successors of the K1 and K3 - logically only in the LV - to photograph really silently, currently the mechanical shutter is still moving.
* A way to focus hyperfocal.
* Focus bracketing, start position end position, number of steps at least up to 100, then the camera automatically takes a series of shots - analogous to bracketing
* GPS must be kept
* The GPS module altitude information is actually present are just not saved. (Addition: Here the track log is meant, to the include height and speed)

* Full remote control of the camera from a computer - emphasis on complete, so everything as if I use the trigger on the camera. It is not understandable, why only single shot actions are supported
* A modern functionable SW interface, to make good remote apps available, Programming Interface al la Magic Lantern
* A way to save all current settings of the camera including all user modes on the SD card and load. Back up different setups at home.
* One or two freely selectable positions on the dial button of the K1, which can be assigned with any custom function.
* The mode used to reintroduce the cleanliness of the sensor - why it did not work is incomprehensible to me.
* The ability to save all current settings of the camera including all user modes on the SD card and load. Back up different setups at home

* A mini-flash and if it is only to control correct flashes.
* lockable eyepiece
* For video cameras, there is the so-called video pin next to the 1/4 "thread, this synonymous with the cameras and battery handles offer (costs nothing helps but twisting)

* Active selection of the card to be written to
* if possible parallel writing on the two cards, both are simultaneously supported at maximum speed.
* USB 3.1 connection, maximum speed fully supported / maybe with charging the battery or as a continuous power supply (if that should go power consumption during operation).

* Joystick for AF field
* more AF fields and / or larger AF area

Have you ever tried to make a series of 3 pictures with the wifi app? It's impossible because only single shot photos are supported.

I don't understand why the have no mode in the app to do exactly the same thing as if you were pressing the release button on the camera.

I like the lcd screen. It fits 95 percent of my usage but sometimes I would like to have it turned a 180°. When I put the camera on the floor to take a UWW picture of the ceiling of a room, or put it directly to a wall to get the opposite wall or object. For all other cases i pref the K1 system because i keeps in line with the camera axis

Will Ricoh ever use crowd funding to develop a new K-1 or other camera?

I don't think so. A crowdfunding project is excellent for small startups with low overhead. In a big Company (and Ricoh is one), so many money gots lost in the overhead of controlling, that you can't explain it to crowdfounders. When more than 50 percent of a budget gets lost in reporting, meetings, meeting project points, paying an project manager crew, doing a lot of financal reporting thats nothing fitted for crowd funding.

I've used my K1 switched on with gps tracking every 5 Seconds for 10 Hours (9 hours with tracking, the buffer was full after 9 hours as shown in the menu). I took only roundabout 50 photos. I've seen no drain on the batteries.

Should Pentax bring “extended ISO” back to the new APSC or future FF flagship body? –

if the native sensor ist capable of handling a lower Iso it would be fine. If the extended ISO is only a divide by x of the base Iso in the camera, with the risc of overexposing in the highlights it's useless, there is a ND Filter better. It there is a good technical solution for that it would be fine if ist is a simple marketing gag it should be omitted.

I would like a technical base ISO of 50 /25 and a extension of the Quality for 1 EV at least in the high ISO's

Pentax should use there patent with the fixed mirror, which can be switched between reflective and partly reflective up to transparent and build an variabe ND-Filter into the body.

During daylight typically ISO 250 sometimes ISO 640.
Taking photos on concerts with low light situation. TAV ISO 6400 on the K1 and ISO 4000 on the K3 working on noise in the RAW Files and pushing up to 2 EV in ACR.

I'm using the Da35mm Macro, the 50mm 2.8 Macro and the 100mm Macro with my K1 on this type of stand. It depend's on the size of the object. Sometimes i'm using the K3 with this 3 lenses (utilising the build in 1.5 APSC tc and the higher Resolution).
I think most of the time it is the 50mm Macro

Pentax Battery Grip

The design with on battery in the grip and a second in then camera is fine for me. When I put the grip off the camera is still fully functional.

And the grip is compact when taken off and put to the camera bag.

I like the Idea of using normal one time 1.5V batteries, when I'm somewhere without the possibility to load the D-Li 90.
I like the additional sd-card. It's a fantastic backup when you forgot to take the cards from the reader to the camera.

I set the priority to the grip first. I'm loading the battery in the grip evertime after a session.

I'm loading the battery in the camera once in 3 month, exchanging it with the grip battery.

I have no needs for more capacity - all may D-Li90 are making more then 900 pictures each.

I'm using all batteries in all cameras switching them erratically when loading them.

K1 (120506 pictures) April 2016 2 D-LI90 (3 years)
K3 ( 85369 pictures) Februar 2014 1 D-LI90 (5 years)
K5 ( 87206 pictures) 2012 1 D-LI90 (7 years)

All 4 working fine with a capacity of more than 900 pictures. I can load roundabout 1700 mAh to each of them.

Copying to computer - pop the card or USB?

I'm using three 256 GB Cards and two 128 GB Card(2x256GB K1 and 1x256GB 1x128GB K3 and one 1x128GB LUMIX DC-TZ202EG-K). And there are older 64 GB Cards in the Battery-Grips. I'm always using a card reader because its much faster then USB -Transfer and it's easier to get the stored gps-tracks (k1). Cards get copied after every session - I never filled one of the cards totally up to now. Maximum for one Session was roundabout 70 GB on a concert 1700 pictures raw.

This shouldn't be a Problem, my cameras have the following shuttercount
K1 120506
K3 85369
K5 88667
K20D 87206
and all are going strong

You should have a look on the body, wether it is damaged or not. My K3 is still used on music Festivals with excellent results.

I didn't see any advantages of stitched Panorama except for the resolution. The differences to the 30 mm shot could be egalized in photoshop.
For me the 30 mm shot feels crispier. But without a look at the photos in original resolutions you can't decide it. I like the singe 85mm shot.

Poll: Do you install a UV filter on all of your lens

Typically no. Modern coatings are good enough in normal cases.

if I'm in a hard environment desert with wind, at the ocean with wind and sand. In a heavy duty factory (metal / glas melting, welding and things like that) I take an uv filter to protect the front lens from accidental mechanical damage
