Dark Photos with K10D

Um, no, I used evaluate. If your going to post about my old thread, down load the pics and look at the exif info. Examples of why the K10d sucks once again.

My old Fuji Finepix 2800z took better pics. This one was taken four years ago of Eastern Point lighthouse.

Why can't the K10d meter worth a damn???

Do a Google search about image quality, you'll find reviews like these two, "The Pentax K10D performs quite well, both in terms of image quality and speed. Among 10 megapixels DSLR cameras, its image quality is still behind the Canon Rebel XTi, the current leader."

"Arguably the biggest rival for the K10D is the Nikon D80. At first glance the K10D appears to thrash it in terms of features including built-in image stabilisation, dust removal, environmental sealing and impressive RAW capabilities; the K10D's also cheaper.

But in our view, the D80 simply out-performs the K10D in day-to-day use. We shot with a D80 throughout the entire period of this review and saw first-hand how it handled exactly the same situations as the K10D. There were many occasions when the K10D required exposure compensation, while the more sophisticated metering of the D80 remained un-phased. We also preferred the output from the D80 using the default settings."

Ditch the Pentax and buy a Canon or Nikon, end your head aches, and heart aches, your wasting memories when taking bad pics with the K10d.

I'm sure that I'll be banned after this post.

It may be an issue with the metering system, or your apeture is stopped down to much. Try using a wider apeture and higher ISO setting such as 400. You should also read FLASH PHOTOGRAPHY 101 – A BEGINNER’S GUIDE - Canon Digital Photography Forums yes, it's from a Canon site, but it does have a lot of good information on indoor flash photography. I feel your pain with the K10d. I sold mine two months ago in favor of a Canon after coming back from Mystic with 200+ dark pictures that were shot in bright sunlight.

I would change "defective equipment" with "inferior" or poor metering and in image processing.

We're just here to enlighten. You will leave Pentax for Canon or Nikon eventually. Doesn't the new Nikon D90 make your mouth water??? Lastly, how do you explain all of the tests and reviews that place Canons and Nikons as being better than Pentax? Show me one test where a K10d or K20d for that matter won over a Nikon or Canon???

Why use the kit lens? Throw on the Canon $80 wonder 50mm 1.8 or the 1.4 usm lens. And shooting RAW seems to always be the answer from the Pentax crowd. You shouldn't have to shoot RAW to get good pictures. Hell, I could shoot raw with a Lumix FZ-8 and get better results than a jpeg from a K10d.

Not a troll my friend!!! Look at my previous posts. I was lured by the Pentax K10d because it had body seals, anti dust sensor cleaning and shake reduction. But all those selling points doesn't make up for poor jpeg image quality and slow auto focus. As for the XTi, well, it owns the K10d when it comes to image quality due to having better metering and better processing. But don't take my word for it, go do a Google such on how it compares to the K10d. The auto focus is also a lot faster, which may be due to the Canon USM and Sigma HSM lenses that are available for it. While were on the subject of lenses, I've found that the lens based IS is much better than the K10d's in body SR, yes you pay more for the lenses, but it's worth it. I can also buy lenses and accessories for my XTi at no less than 20 stores that are within a 30 minute drive from my house. Don't get me wrong, I loved the feel of the K10d in my hands, it's built like a little tank, but the image quality wasn't that good and I couldn't buy the lenses that I wanted because Pentax doesn't make them. If they were to add SDM to the DA 18-250mm lens I might have kept it. Look at Canon or Nikon, they have the 18-200mm USM IS/VR lens, Sigma even makes one (that I own) as does Tamron with there 28-300mm and 18-270mm VC lenses. I'm not bashing the K10d or Pentax, I'm just expressing my displeasure that I experienced with the K10d.

I owned a K10d for a short period of time. I was able to take a few good pictures with it, but 90% of them came out like crap. I thought the poor quality was due to the lenses I was using so I did a lot of buying and selling to try and find one that would take good pictures. The lenses weren't the problem. I then thought it was operator error on my part, but when I borrowed a family members Nikon D200 and took the same pics as with the K10d, the Nikon always came out on top. In my opinion the K10d and Pentax systems as a whole have crappy metering and in camera jpeg processing. Plus Pentax's lens line up is lacking when it comes to USM and IS lenses. I can't even find a camera store within 100 miles that actually stock a Pentax lens. I sold my K10d a few weeks ago and am the happy owner of a Canon XTi which takes excellent high quality pictures everytime I push the shutter button. It such a release to know all my pictures will come out great with the Canon.

"Of course, this is just MY opionion and I'm sure many Pentax users will say I'm wrong.........."

I had to edit the map name.

I was taking some pics yesterday trying to get to know my K10d better. I up loaded the pics to the PC and noticed that they all have a dark spot in the same place, upper left corner. I cropped the pics a little to show the spot. By the way, I've been thinking about getting a Pentax 18-250mm lens, will it take better pictures than the Sigma 24-135mm that I used to take these pics? Thanks, Chris

Better lens for K10d
Posted By explr1
Replies: 20

The 18-55mm lens takes great pictures, now that I'm using the right metering, but I find myself switching to the 50-200mm lens because it's faster at 55mm than the 18-55mm lens and seems to take better pictures. Ebay has several 28-70mm f4 FA lenses for sale. I'm just wondering if the FA lens is better, meaning faster than the 18-55mm lens I have now. I really want to buy a 17-70mm DA lens when it comes out.

I'm looking at buying better lenses for my K10d. One of the lenses that I currently have is a 18-55mm Mk II lens. I was wondering if one of the older FA 28-70mm F4 lenses would take higher quality pictures? Thanks.....

I would like to thank everyone for all of your help. I'm now shooting with P (MTF,) SV and TV modes using multi-segment metering with +0.7 exposure compensation and my pictures are much better now. I've also ordered the book Practical Artistry: Light & Exposure for Digital Photographers by Harold Davis.

The picture looks great now, what program did you use on it? The K10d is my first DSLR. My previous digital cameras have been a Canon PowerShot S2, a Fuji Finepix 2800 and a S6000fd. I thought by using spot metering I just needed to point it at the darkest part of the scene, lock exposure and the shot would be properly exposed. I guess thats not how it works. I thought about shooting everything in 400 ISO and using matrix metering but I didn't. I'm use to point, shoot and forget about it. I see that I have to learn how to use the camera correctly and also need to buy a good photo shop program. I did get some good pictures, but the dark ones made me want to take a hammer to my K10d.
