Dilema - where to go next

Flash with tilt and swivel head (so you can bounce off the ceiling or walls) and a zoom somewhere in the 16 - 70 range. Metz 44 or 48, Sigma 17-70 is a good budget choice. Flash is more useful than fast glass, with moving kids you need to stop down a bit to hide small focus errors.

why da 16-50?

Well, in my book great performance at f8 is nothing to write home about. At f8 a lot of much cheaper lenses, including dirt cheap legacy ones, perform just as great. Personally I expect an $1160 (that's how much it costs here) flagship constant f2.8 lens to perform great at f2.8 and excellent at f4-f5.6. I just don't see that from this lens, at least my copy and few I've seen. My DA 17-70 delivered better IQ wide open at f4 than DA* 16-50 stopped down to f4. Not to mention SDM just failed last weekend on my lightly used (around 300 shots) lens and I've seen brend new and recently repaired lenses still fail the same (so I'm not buying the "improved new parts" bs).

I expect the manufacturer to test its product before releasing to the market.

I use Lightroom 4 in Virtualbox virtual machine (I'm too lazy to fiddle with Wine and already had a Win7 virtual machine). I gave Darktable and Raw Therapee another try and still didn't like them enough. I'm very satisfied with LR4 now, just have to get used to a couple of things.

As someone wrote on the Corel forum: "Corel, where software goes to die."

My guess: Corel just wanted to get the raw engine to implement it in PSP. Probably it was easier to buy a small firm (Bibble Labs) and their product than develop internally "in house". I can't really imagine any other sane reason for not releasing any new useful release, not supporting new cameras, not fixing several year old critical bugs, firing the entire original developer team, leaving customers in the dark with zero communication (or once in a blue moon some new product manager throws in some promises then disappears) ,etc.

Too bad, I liked Bibble 5.x / AfterShot Pro, for me it was the best available solution on Linux at that time (Darktable was very basic with strange UI, RawTherapee was too cumbersome to use for me). It's very fast, has good UI, some unique features, all in all could have been a very good product competing LR. Unfortunately it also has half-finished thus semi-useless features, some missing basic features (although there are good, free 3rd party plugins for them) and many critical bugs. Good example of how to screw a nice product with great potential.

That won't help AfterShot Pro. It simply denies to open DNG files created by the Adobe converter and DNG files from unsupported cameras. The problem is not in the DNG files, ASP just refuses to open it if the manufacturer and camrea model in the EXIF is not in its supported cameras list. If you modify to EXIF to contain a supported camera then it will read the same file fine.
So really, it's just an interesting decision of ASP developers.

By the way ASP is dead software, just check Corel user forum. Many of us already jumped ship to other software.

LR4 - Missing Camera Profiles

Change the profile to embedded on a photo then create a user preset which only contains that setting. Then at import you can select this preset in the quick development (?) options on the right side of the import window.
I don't have LR here so I can't tell the exact details, but hopefully you get the idea.

See, your toy archery set was only good for silver, with more expensive set than your master you could have won gold :p

Quite interesting, because I have same setup (K-5 althouth on v1.13 fw, Metz 48 AF-1 and Sigma 30) and I always get the issue. I may upgrade the K-5 to 1.14 and check later.

What is my K5 autofocus doing?

Focusing at 16-18mm on distant (more than ~15m away) objects has always been inconsistent with my K-5, regardless of the lens used. My guess is that the SAFOX AF sensors just don't have enough resolution for the fine details of distant objects with wide angle lenses, maybe aberration of the lens and AF microlens optics are also partly at fault in these cases. I also noticed that when it's a miss in these cases then it's an absolute miss, i.e. nothing is in focus (at least you can't find any spot on the picture being in good focus). With parfocal zooms I just zoom to mid or tele FL, focus and lock focus, then zoom back to wide end and take picture - this works 99%.

Exactly my feelings. Though I get more disappointing and mediocre results than good ones from this lens. My DA 17-70 was much better overall, I very much regret my stupid mistake of selling that for DA* 16-50

Don't sell or buy anything. Just shoot a lot with your existing lenses. As you shoot more and more, you'll get a feeling of which lens you don't like / use and what focal lenght and/or aperture (read: new lens) you miss. Then sell what you don't like / use and buy what you need. You may even discover that you already have your perfect lens collection and don't need to sell or buy anything :)
Unless you suffer from LBA, of course.

Sounds like a contact problem inside the flash head. I'm afraid you either take the flash apart to have a look inside or take it to repair centre.

Pentax K-5, K-5II and K-5IIs rear sync broken with manual lenses

(rudeness edited out)

Then please explain why exactly the same setup in same controlled conditions works with K-7, K-x, K-m, ... pretty much any camera before K-5? If it works fine with cameras before the K-5 and suddenly doesn't work with K-5 (and its successors) then it's bloody obvious that Pentax screwed something in K-5, either intentionally ("feature") or by mistake (bug).
It's exactly the same with the P-TTL massive overexposures in the K-5, where exactly the same thing worked fine in earlier cameras and suddenly didn't work fine in K-5. Pentax even acknowledged the issue and included a fix (which didn't fix the issue entirely) in one of the firmware updates.

(additional rudeness edited out)

Pentax K-5: made by Pentax
Pentax 540 flash: made by Pentax
Pentax K/M lens: made by Pentax

So how do you want to blame 3rd party when there's only Pentax gear involved? The "oh, it's the 3rd party's fault" fanboy argument is getting really old...

This is not the first evident of Pentax screwing up flash in K-5.

I usually clean the contacts with rubber eraser and sometimes with alcohol (the type you can buy in pharmacy). With flash I always use either Av mode (ISO fixed at 400 or 800 depending on the scene) or M mode.

I never shoot in P, but just did a quick test with my K-5 and Metz 48 flash. It works fine, picture is ok, though P mode decided to use quite interesting settings for aperture / shutter / ISO.

Make sure
- flash is seated properly in hot-shoe, contacts are clean (even small contact problem can cause interesting things)
- flash is not in slave mode and it's really in P-TTL (not just TTL due to connection issue)
- camera and flash both have latest firmware

It only works with a remote. Just buy a $3 cable or IR remote, then you also avoid shakes due to touching the shutter release button.

I haven't noticed any change in shutter sound when shooting in 39-45 deg C this summer. Even if it was a bit louder, it surely wasn't as loud and clunky as K-m shutter sound.

Raw -> PNG via GIMP

It isn't a raw processing program at all. It needn't and shouldn't be. I can't imagine why anyone would expect raw processing program functionality from it. Just like how a heavy duty dumper isn't a rally racing car and you can't expect to win the rally with it or to move 5 tons of gravel with a racing car. They are for different purposes. If someone doesn't understand that then... uhm, maybe educate yourself a bit more.

I guess the OP is using Gimp due to doing image manipulations that raw converter programs can't do that well or at all.

I'm done with this thread.
