DPReview's interview with Ricoh Imaging

Nice story. But is it true?

Mirrorless sales have been essentially flat for 5 running years so it's hard to say there's social momentum. And for every sales person touting Sony and Fuji, there's probably one or two others saying "buy a real pro camera not a rinky-dink mirrorless toy".

And all those "overwhelming promotional efforts" cost a lot of money which is making the cameras of marketing-focused companies a lot more expensive. (Wasn't mirrorless supposed to be cheaper than DSLRs cause it sure doesn't look like they are.)

Meanwhile, Pentax keeps putting out well-built, high-IQ cameras are aren't burdened by high promotional costs.

Got into a social conversation with a volunteer (retired professional product shooter) photographer for the St. Louis Art Museum. Long story short, hes a Pentax guy - used and still uses his 645nll, never uses flash, shoots handheld and uses telephoto (to reduce keystoning) to photograph paintings for the catalogs. The museum staff togs need to close a gallery for hours to shoot. He just gets it done in the morning before the gallery opens, so the museum PR staff uses him instead of the house togs.

He said his best photograph ever is a telephoto image detail of Starry Night that shows every brushstroke in the moon. Wants to meet up to try out my K-1 with FA*300/4.5.

Top points. In addition, I would add that a marketing team can only present what has been presented to them. If plans change upstream, then the marketing teams plans must changed accordingly. All they can say is what is the case at the time based on the knowledge they have (senior management may not have told them very much).

I would think that quite a few statements made by Ricoh's marketing team have been overtaken by subsequent events. For example, the financial crisis at Ricoh generally seems to have led to a careful view of each of the company's business units during the past year. So it is entirely possible that statements made at, say, Photokina in 2016 no longer hold - a subsequent company review has laid down different goals and strategies.

There's no bad faith in this matter at all. It is just people doing their job - and much of that cannot be more than presenting a snapshot in time. The common thread here if there is one is differentiation. Pentax do what Pentax do. They aren't going to produce a camera which could have been made by Nikon or Fuji, so don't interpret what they say as implying they are about to. And exactly how and what Pentax do is dependent on goals laid down higher up the chain well above the marketing level.

Folks who expect companies to hold to past statements with gluelike precision aren't being realistic, imho, or they are pushing an agenda, perhaps because that's their job. Things just can't work like that in a highly uncertain world. As JPT says, don't confuse facts with aspirations.

. . . . If man is still alive.

Did you mean 2025? Or were you having a Zager and Evans flashback?

In some industries 65% of blue collar employees are at risk over the next decade - for instance, over-the-road trucking could be entirely Driverless from terminal to terminal, with human drivers only for local trailer pickup and delivery. There are 2,000,000 long-haul truck drivers in the US and Canada.

Their biggest shortcoming is on the lack of information they release on how to maximize use of their settings. Leaving marketing to chance is one thing. Not publishing how various settings are supposed to function for a given task is ridiculous. How to make best use of the settings shouldn't be left to chance.

I'm just glad Audiobomber loves to play with his camera and publishes the results of his experiments.

There was a time in my life i would have been all over these things. I'm just not that smart anymore. :D

This is a thread for those who may want to come out of the closet.

Lots of threads and posts have been made on how some aspect of the K-1 isn't good enough, well this thread is about saying out loud for all to hear that, in your world, "it's me letting the K-1 down for the most part"

Go on..... you know it's true!

I'm coming out.... by the way!

I have a suggestion for all three or four of you guys apparently hung up on the K70's technical aspects.

Rather than stoking it up all the time and raising tensions in a hot medium - there is a big element here of Who Cares? anyway, the world has more important things to worry about - my suggestion would be to write a polite letter to the Chairman of Ricoh. Use pen and paper, not email. If after a few attempts there is no answer or an unsatisfactory answer, then you will have your reply. The Chairman neither knows nor cares whether the company has a camera division. I'm sure that isn't true of Ricoh, of course, but it probably is all too true of many companies and their approach to small subdivisions. In my experience, the very senior people in these places are often surprisingly isolated and don't really know what is going on out there among the massed ranks of their customers. They are reduced to quizzing their daughter and her school friends. The smart ones, and they are usually very smart to have got that far, often welcome news from the frontline and pay close attention to what a letter says. For them, it can be a genuine insight into how well X, Y or Z department is actually doing.

I look forward to your telling us what the Chairman of Ricoh has say on the matter. He is a charming gentleman, I am sure. Until then the only answer is "Don't Know" and there is no point in arguing about that is there?

CP+ Interview Question Suggestions

Adam, I have a suggestion for you: go to Imaging Resource and see Dave Etchells' interview with Pentax/Ricoh. It feels like an open discussion, and the result is amazing.
My point is: going there with a list of question, well, the result will be no different than the last time you did that (and given our questions, full of "we can't talk about this yet"). Having some freedom to "go with the flow" and offering Ricoh the freedom to steer the discussion towards subjects they can (and want to) talk about, I'd say you can get something much more interesting.

This being said, I'd appreciate if you could pass them my congratulations for making yet another amazing camera, how I like that it's so typically Pentax, and also my desire for some modern, very high quality yet reasonably compact primes.

I am the opposite of a politician: I'm a programmer.

My idea was that some people are constantly moving the goalposts; and the smartphone had only one role: argumentum ad absurdum. Yet you perverted my words as if Ricoh selling a smartphone with a camera would actually be a good idea. Are you a politician, perhaps? :p

Remember, you'd already have a device in your pocket, able to function as a remote controller/live view display. WPA2-AES is reasonably secure, interference is not a problem which can be solved just by a custom protocol; as for the other functions you're mentioning, some of them can be implemented as easily over WiFi than over a custom protocol. Though flash synchronization might be an issue.
In any case, the camera - being a high end DSLR - must be a self-contained device; and making a vital component removable (thus easily lost/forgotten at home etc.) is not acceptable. Having the camera charge the LCD/smartphone's battery from its own battery is less than optimal. Add the complexity required by a smartphone: OS requiring regular updates, application support, GSM radio, likely another GPS, powerful hardware... and it will become obsolete in about 6 months. The non-smartphone solution is a bit better, still being a self-contained battery powered computer.
All to replicate a device which you already own. While keeping the price low, obviously.
Do you understand now why it's an argumentum ad absurdum and not an idea about what they could actually do?

By the way, Ricoh has a patent for a camera having a smartphone holder instead of the back LCD. You might see that... not on this camera, though (and not on high-end cameras).

-2EV with an f1.4 lens impressive for a MilC not so much for a dlsr

There point of valid for the ability to utlise wider aperture to get more light but then again a K3 will focus down to -3ev with most lens

As all lens irrelevant of 'speed' focus using open aperture and most lens are not f1.4 I'm not sure of D previews conclusion as to the A7rii advantage over Dslr's

It would seem better to have a sensor that can do -3EV with an f2.8 baseline sensor than one that needs an f1.4 lens to approach -2ev

Lets see the test done again with say the kit lens on all bodies !

You may think I'm being frivolous but when did you last see a 70-200 F1.4 or even a 135 F1.4 ?

Low light continuous shooting is general used for indoor sports shooting you are not going to be using a 50mm f1.4 for that so a silly test they did as it has no use case.

Ricoh Imaging is not doomed (or: Ricoh Financial Results Q1 2016)

I have greatly enjoyed Pentax being doomed, and hope no one spoils it! When I first bought my DS the salesman told me I would be buying the last Pentax model ever.....I figured it would be a collector item...but it wasn't was a wonderful camera!:) Then came the K10D and I got that, at the time everyone over on DPR was predicting the doom of Pentax, so I felt good to have the last Pentax for certain...and what a nice camera it was! :D
But damn it! I was fooled again when the K20D came out and made liars out of those I had trusted. The K20D was so solid and dependable, I was certain Pentax would see no need in ever producing any newer model? But.....then came the K5 with all that high ISO ability and fooled me again!:(

I now shoot with a K5IIs and am afraid to upgrade in the near future, not because Pentax is doomed, but because they are going to fool me again by making me think they are. The thrill of "Pentax Doomed" just isn't what it used to be after all these years of failed dooming.:(
