If people are repairing MXs, LXs, and Super Programs, they will repair a PZ1, PZ20, etc. But they seem to hold up rather well.

Best Pentax film SLRs?

Well, I guess this answer is fairly easy for me by virtue of the film cameras I kept after going digital. They are the LX, K2, and 6x7. And what I love about the 6x7 is that with a converter that I have, I can use my 6x7 lenses on any SLR I have film or digital, APS-C or full frame. No other camera company can say that from entirely within its own system.

Things continue to go well for me. I've gotten picked up by a daily recently, and I'm very happy about that. I continue to use the K-1 and K-3 as my primary units, and sometime soon I hope to trade in my K-5iis toward a KP with battery grip. Down the road a K-1 Mark II or maybe a K-3 III when that comes out. I'm having fun with my gear. And don't let anyone tell you the Pentax line has consumer construction grade; these cameras are tough, as most any Canon or Nikon, and unreal in the rain and snow. They are the real deal!

And don't let anyone tell you Pentax can't shoot sports, that's a myth, and a bad one. I have never shot rodeo ever in my life, but here you go:

We've all seen what you are referring to, Lesmore49. I've worked for newspapers since 1991. Yes, of course most use Canon and Nikon, but Canon has the lion's share of media pros. Canon has always been, since 1971, and continues to be very aggressive in pursuing the pro market. This has worked well for them; they realized if a lot of people saw pros using Canon, the amateurs would come into stores asking for them. They jump started this in the late 1970s when they introduced the Canon AE-1, and started and aggressive and persistent TV advertising run, which lasted for many years. That, coupled with more and more pros turning to Canon, especially when AF was introduced, put Canon over Nikon, who continued to make effective gear but wasn't nearly as aggressive in marketing as Canon. Minolta, Olympus, and Pentax occasionally dabbled in TV ads but Canon was relentless and stayed with it. That investment has paid off for them and they are top dog right now. Nikon remains in the game, but they really have to work harder at it.

So along comes someone like me, a born maverick, comes to a newspaper in metro Providence/southern Mass., I show my book and I get hired to freelance. I got razzed a lot showing up with Pentax in a Nikon house, but I made my bones shooting everything they threw at me. I had serious Pentax glass backing me up, including a 15mm f/3.5, and I got every job done. I eventually got all my own lenses, sometimes going with Tamron and/or Tokina to fill needs that were too expensive for me by Pentax, though I did score an excellent deal buying a Pentax 300mm f/2.8. If I ever got a FT gig, I'm well equipped but it might be a decent idea to buy a Canon or Nikon body to match what the house has for a system in case it became necessary to use a particular lenses I didn't have, such as a 600mm or some such. But I am very proud to shoot with what I have with results that can compete with the Canikon guys. I have no plans to change. Pentaxian for life!

And we're still out there. I've been using Pentax for 42 years. Currently using the K-1, K-3, and K-5iis for my main units.

Pentax K-1 "Thank you" Thread

I shot my first Pentax in 1975. Through the years with every new technology and innovation, which required some manufacturers to change their mounts and leave the past lenses behind like Canon and Minolta (Sony), Pentax has persisted and embraced the new, while maintaining a strong grip on their legacy. And now with the K-1, we have come full circle, by creating a camera that cherishes its past while welcoming in the new. I can now shoot with both my APS-C lenses and my FF lenses with equal ease, giving me the best of both worlds. Outstanding job, Ricoh/Pentax.

Already, this camera is provoking a lot of catty and patronizing remarks from the Canikon contingient, a group of people who can understand why Pentax remains and persists. they makes these remarks even though most haven't seen or touched the camera. What does that mean, really?

It means they know the K-1 is a real blockbuster, and they feel threatened. And it means Pentax did an amazing job in building the K-1. Great job, Pentax, great job. In my 41st year of using Pentax, we at last have our holy grail of DSLRs.

And thank you.

Has anyone seen this guy review a camera before? He gave the new K-1 a rather lukewarm review; then claimed -- adamantly -- that NO ONE using Canon or Nikon would ever switch to the K-1. I tried to tell him that nothing is that absolute, but he says no way anyone will switch. Yikes. Know it alls. This guy had an attitude about the K-1 even before he read about it, and of course, he hasn't seen one yet.

That may have been the smartest thing you ever did. The K-50 is the real sleeper in photography. I have a K-3 and others, but that K-50 stays with me. The results blow me away.

I recently got a volt meter and measured both a Vivitar 285 and the ironically named Vivitar 285HV, and both came in the safe zone for my K-3, K-50, and K-30. The K-5 has got hot shoe issues of its own but that's for another thread.

He knows more than he will tell. Tamron is aware of Pentax's resurgence. When the full frame comes out, it will much easier to make FF lenses for the camer as oppose to designing APS-C glass, to the point where Tamron can afford to cater to pentax users. The same cannot be said for someone like Olympus, not as much, anyway.

Count me among those who like the look of the K-30. I notice in the last few years Pentax w/Ricoh coming out with bold designs and if the reaction isn't what they thought it should be, quickly coming out with an update; case in point the K-30 to K-50, and K-S1 to K-S2. But I like the K-30. I was planning to get one when (at the time) a super deal became available on a K-50 I jumped at it, and the image quality was outstanding. But I could not take my eye off the K-30, and I recently bought of those and I'm very happy with it.

Never was a fan of the MZ-S, IMHO one of the few designs lacking in good ergonomics. Pentax has hit on a very well laid out design routine with their DSLRs and I have every reason to think the new FF will contnue that tradition, albeit with some new kinks. As long as it has those 6 letters at the top, I will work with it.

If you want a design more like Canikon, get one.

I think the designs in general have been sound. When I grip a Pentax, it is solid and firm, unlike the Canikons and certainly the Olympus. For lack of a better term, a very masculine grip and confidence inspiring.

K5 II Flash Issues - Need some advice
Posted By LXNights

I put my K-5 through some rigorous testing this evening, using just about every flash I have. The pattern is still inconsistent, with just about every flash failing to fire as much as it did. I even used a Vivitar 285 and my Sunpak 622 and the pattern repeated itself. I cleaned all contacts, still same thing. I put the same flashes on my K-3, and that was like a Swiss Watch, fired every songle time no mater what flash was used. That is also true of my K-50 and K-30 as well. I'm hoping the latest firmware update has a handle on this, just downloaded it tonight and put it into the K-5.
Well, I got the firmware update, but same thing happens. I use a flash and it fires on my first frame, then I lose 5-7 shots until it feels like firing again. It even seemed to fire but I got a blank black picture. I used a Vivitar 285, Sunpack 530, Pentax 540, and Sunpack 622, and all had the same issues. I even tried the 285 and 622 on the camera using a PC cord, but to no avail. Used the same flashes on my K-3, worked like a Rolex. WTH is going on here? And forget bouncing the Pentax 540 flash on my K-5, one goose egg after another with that; but absolutely no issues with the K-3, K-30, and K-50. SMH...
