Interesting discussion point, but what does this have to do with K1000 prices?

What cooltouch said... Check out the price for a nice used 40mm Distagon (the closest equivalent to the SWC's 38mm Biogon that you can actually mount on a 500 series). Also, check out the size ;)

You'll have to excuse the Swedish camera p*^n for a little while longer, I haven't had any film developed to share yet...

Hasselblad SWC/M in the sun for it's first outing today.

Your miles may vary, but Ive generally heard very good things about KEHs ugly stuff. Having said that, Id be cautious of any LX that hasnt been CLAd and thoroughly tested...

I think if any camera of this age has been mistreated it’s quite possible you’ll end up with cascading failures...

My SP F also has a split-image screen.

My Mum owned this Spotty from new and I'm almost certain she wouldn't have ordered it with a different screen from standard.

Because it may not be seals (see the above comments regarding the shutter).

Thanks for your comments. When you say check the shutter, what am I checking?

MX and SMC-Tak 50/f1.4

I suspect I would have shot this with the shutter-release down

Going on my observations over the last decade, and the price tracking on PF (Pentax MX - Pentax Manual Focus Film SLRs - Pentax Camera Reviews and Specifications), MX prices haven't being going up at all. If anything they've had a gradual, long-term downward trend. When I first got into Pentax 35mm (which would have been around 2008) I expected to pay about $150 for a clean MX.

I've been using MX's for about ten years and love them. In this time the only issue I've had across four seperate bodies is a failed light-meter (although honestly any light meter of this vintage is probably on borrowed time).

If you get one 'extremely cheap' there is a good chance that you will need to send it for a CLA. This isn't a condemnation of the MX, rather it's acknowledging that any mechanical item that's four decades old might need some love and attention to work perfectly. You may be lucky and have it work perfectly out of the box, cbut it's something you should allow for in your budget if you don't want to have a paperweight.

Honestly, if it were me I would pay a little more and find a body that has had a recent service or that the seller can demonstrate is in good working condition - it will likely save you money in the long run. They pop up in the classifieds here regularly.

The only electronics in the MX are for the light-meter, and the camera is fully functional at all shutter speeds without it.

You're overthinking it. It just becomes muscle memory...

Nup, Leica M-A. Introduced in 2014 and still in production. Fully mechanical and manual, cloth focal-plane shutter, doesn't even have a lightmeter.

Why do I get the impression on forums like these that whenever people are talking about 'hipsters' they really just mean young people shooting film?

What Is Up With K1000 Prices?

At the moment on Gumtree (Australia's Craigslist) there's four working K1000's, all selling for between $250-300 with a 50mm (f1.7 or f2, no f1.4). There's two 'cheap' examples up, one with a sticking shutter for $80 and one in 'bad condition for a super cheap price' of $100...

It's hard to know what they're actually selling for (Gumtree doesn't show sold items), but these asking prices are generally amongst the highest for mechanical Pentax bodies, comparable to the MX, and generally above the KM, KX etc...

Ironically, I suspect the popularity and high prices have come about because the K1000 is consistently recommended as an affordable body to learn photography. Also, they seem to be mainly purchased by beginners who don't have much knowledge of standard prices (whether it's $50 or $300, its still a lot cheaper than a new dSLR).

I hope so.

I just picked up a Nikon FM2n that belonged to my Wife's Grandfather. Unfortunately it's been sitting in a closet in Kuala Lumpur (ie. humid) for 10yrs+ and is very, very gummed up, although it looks like nothing is actually broken so hopefully its salvageable...

Another 'No' vote that didn't vote because your No option is misleading. I shoot probably 70% film 30% digital, but I'd have zero interest in a 35mm K-1. A big part of why I shoot is film is access to the wonderful, mechanical and manual bodies. Give me a cloth focal-plane shutter, manual exposure, manual focus and manual advance any day. If I wanted a fancy-pants auto-everything I'd buy a MZS...

If I were to buy a brand new film body it would be something along the lines of the Leica M-A.

My experience is that the war-torn ones are often fine. It's the clean looking bodies that have been sitting in a draw for 15 years that I've had issues with. Mechanical stuff doesn't like not being used...
