I hope I will never see anyone mount a Tamron 70-300mm f/4-5.6 to a K-1, for I may just consider that to be borderline blasphemy

Funny, I saw a K-x in the hands of an Indian tourist in Malaysia at KLCC (I asked him and he told me) in April of this year; the second and the last time I ever saw anyone sporting a Pentax (D)SLR in the wild. But this guys probably shouldn't count, for he was trying to take photographs of the Petronas Towers using the FGZ 360 flash.

The first being my very first K20d that I had sold to a forum member when I ran into her at the Cherry Blossom festival in Washington DC a couple of years ago.

Anyone seen this error with Pentax Software?

Thanks much Joe, I should've (re)searched the site for similar errors before posting.

I found two CheckInfo.ini files, one under my admin profile that I use mainly for installing stuff and maintaining the computer, and another one for internet/everyday use. Deleting them worked.

Anyone seen this error with Pentax Software?

Soon after starting PENTAX Digital Camera Utility v4.33, this error message pops up.

This has happened before. I had to uninstall the software and re-install for it to work, but this time even that didn't work so I installed the software to a new location, and it still doesn't work.

Any ideas on what may be causing it? I have XP Pro 2002 with SP3 with all the current patches and updates on a semi-decent workstation.

K-5 Warranty Question

Just curious, if you buy a new K-5 from say, Adorama, do you have to register it in order to get support from Pentax/Adorama if and when something goes wrong with it? I purchased mine more than a month ago in late November, followed by their 2-year warray extension about 3 weeks ago.

This information is probably buried somewhere inside the box but to be honest, I haven't touched anything out of that box except the camera, battery and its charger.

C.R.I.S. Question

It is no big deal, more of a curiosity than anything else really, especially knowing they may have your personal info on there if you registered with 'em. Hopefully C.R.I.S. continues to remain focused on repairing lenses and cameras which they seem to have mastered even if they don't seem too adept at that web doodah

C.R.I.S. Question

So I sent my lens off to CRIS for repair and its been just over a week since they got it. And registered with to look at the status and provide feedback, updates, etc...

My question is, my passwords don't seem to stick for more than a day for whatever reasons. Here's the sequence: My new password doesn't work, I request a password reset, receive one by email, use that to login, change my password, logout, use the new password to login successfully.

But the next day my new password doesn't work. It happened more than a couple of times. Anyone else seen this? Also doesn't seem to stick is any other user information you add such as telephone number, etc.

If I remember next time, I will try the password they emailed me when I cannot login with my new password.

K-5 flash over-exposure solutions?

I recently got a K-5 also and noticed over-exposure when using flash, regardless of on-board, hot-shoe or wireless.

Using the same flash unit (AF 540 FGZ), same lens (Tamron AF28-75mm f2.8) and same settings (f2.8, 1/180 and ISO 100), I took the following test shots in wireless mode with the flash bouncing off low White ceiling from the same spot. I tried to keep most of the settings the same yet some could be slightly off, but not enough in my opinion to justify the significant over-exposure by K-5.

All shots were taken with the flash in p-TTL mode, in RAW (PEF) format and then re-sized while converting to JPEG using Pentax Digital Camera Utility v4.33. No other PP.

K200d, f2.8, ISO 100, 1/180

K20d, f2.8, ISO 100, 1/180

K-5, f2.8, ISO 100, 1/180

Bad luck with 2 dead pentax in my hands

I agree with that notion also. It is also one dSLR from Pentax with just one firmware upgrade from its original release, speaks volumes about the (lack of) bugs reported from the field considering the possibility many of them are still being used.

I started with a G9 more than four years ago when it just came out, which still works as my backup whenever I look for just a P&S. It is one tough little camera with a lot of muscle.

Sensor/Mirror Cleaning

Digital SLR sensor cleaning is much easier than you think. There is a lot of help on but as always, use discretion on what to follow. I like the following clip that talks about multiple methods; I've successfully used the wet sensor cleaning at least a dozen times so far on several different dSLRs that I've had.

Thanks, Adam, please wish me luck because after a lot of hesitation, I've decided to give it a go at last.

Although I've been quite happy with my K20D/K200D that I currently own, as well as the K-7 that I briefly owned -- all of them more than meet my needs -- I still decided that I just wanted to see what all this hoopla was all about based on the raves from all those fanatics that seem to harbor this place

Move from 18-135 to 16-50 + 50-135 DA* Lenses

I second that.

I have been very happy with the 50-135, and happy enough with the 16-50 to keep wanting more of it even though its SDM has failed a couple of times.

It is not all that difficult, actually. They don't have to display every image at the same resolution, which ruins images that were submitted at a resolution less than what is the maximum allowed today.

They could very easily detect and display existing content in its native resolution, or down-scale it if necessary to the maximum they allow today. That way, not all images are displayed at the same resolution, but they will at least be displayed at their optimum resolution.

Reliability of the DA* lenses's SDM system

I am on my 3rd 16-50 now. The first two had a combined total of 3 failed motors. Pentax replaced my last lens with a new copy, but it also squeaks, and needs a little time to wake up after mounting it each time.

All my copies have had great optics and I've been very pleased with the image quality and colors however their motors just suck. And what sucks more is Pentax's reluctance/inability to provide screw-drive capability on these lenses.

On the other hand, my 50-135 has been working great, which makes me wonder if the external zoom mechanics may be contributing to the SDM failures on the 16-50. But then again, 60-250 seems similar to the 16-50 in that respect yet reports of its SDM failures seem far fewer, but that could also be because 16-50 sells more...
