Thank you. I also got a series of shots of another nice catch later in the game. There were lots of highlights since we won 56-13.

K1 Mark 2 Repairs Through NewLeaf from Adorama

I've seen mixed reviews on them as well. I had problems with my original K1 with the shutter flutter and lock ups after the warranty expired. I had gotten the Pentax extended warranty on a K3 in the past and never needed it but for $20 it was easy to buy. I didn't see any Pentax warranty offers for the K1 or K1ii so I didn't get one on the K1. When I bought the K1ii in June I decided to look at the New Leaf warranties and there were two. One was just the extended warranty on parts and labor in the case of failure. For $30 they had one that included "drops and spills". When I spoke with someone at Adorama and asked about the plans I was told that the plan did include accidental damage so I opted to pay the extra $30. I teach and sometimes will let students use the camera to take photos so that was a consideration as well.

I guess I have gotten my money's worth even if they refuse to cover anything in the future. I was a little irritated at the tone of the person who said they were doing this as a one time exception, that it really shouldn't be covered. I worked at Circuit City for a while and know that the extended warranties are pretty lucrative for the companies since most folks never have to use them.

Adams Electronics did the repair on this camera. I had dealt with Precision before on a different K1. The communication with Adams I found to be much better. I had to send my older K1 to Precision to have the AF button replaced and to fix the shutter shake problems. It was out of warranty and they had a set fee of $365 or so if I recall correctly. It took a few weeks to repair. A couple of months later the shutter messed up and wouldn't close completely so I had to send it back. They did warranty their work so it didn't cost anything. I also mentioned that the battery grip was not working with the camera and they replaced the contacts on the camera for that as well. It was just frustrating to be without the camera for so long.

I'm not sure how extensive their inventory would be but they at least had the lens mount parts to replace mine. The email I got from them before sending the camera in said that the normal turn around is 3 to 4 weeks but with the pandemic times to get parts from Ricoh/Pentax could be unpredictable. I can understand that and was prepared to not get the camera back for a while. I can deal better with that if the company keeps me informed. It was a pleasant surprise to get it back so quickly.

On September 5th I drove up to the Blue Ridge Parkway to get some photos. I arrived late afternoon to get some shots and planned to stay to get some shots of the Milky Way. After shooting for a while I began to prepare for the night shots once it got dark. I removed my camera strap and screwed on the tripod connector and connected it to the tripod, at least I thought it was connected. When I went to grab the camera and move to the position to shoot the Milky Way the camera the camera fell from the tripod to the pavement landing on the 14mm Rokinon lens. The camera would not focus and the lens was difficult to get off and no lens would connect once I got it off.

When I got home a couple of hours later I looked up my information on the extended warranty that I purchased when I bought the camera in June. At the time there was a $30 difference ($100 vs $70) to include the drops and spills option so I chose to get it since I sometimes let students use my camera at school. I immediately submitted a claim. Since it was the Labor Day weekend I did not receive an answer until Tuesday or Wednesday. They replied back asking for more information on how the accident happened. I replied back pretty quickly.

I didn't hear anything else for about a month. I tried calling and was on hold for over an hour. I tried again a couple of days later and finally spoke with someone directly. After looking up the information she put me on hold for a bit. She then said she was referring it to a supervisor and that someone would reply back that afternoon (a Friday) or Monday at the latest. I finally got a call back on Wednesday saying that they would repair it but that it was a one time thing. I bit my tongue and thanked her. The implication was that it should not be covered since it was my fault that I had not checked the tripod mount. Maybe the fact that they had neglected replying back quicker led to them agreeing to cover it, in any case I was glad to finally have an answer.

As for the good part of the experience, they set up the repairs to be done by a company in California called Adams Electronics. I got an email from them the afternoon that New Leaf approved the repairs. I filled out the forms from their website and called to check and see if I could send them the lens that was also damaged and get an estimate since it was not covered. They said they would be glad to give me an estimate at no charge. I packed the camera and mailed it to them.

A few days after the camera arrived at their shop I emailed to verify they had gotten it and asked if there was an update. Within an hour I received a call from them and they said that they could not repair the lens but had contacted a Rokinon center and that their quote was $150-$300. Since I paid $279 for it I asked them to just return the lens. He then told me that they would be able to shop the camera back repaired within the week since it only needed to have the lens mount replaced. Before the day was over I received an email from FedEx. The camera arrived today, a week later. Initial testing went well. I'll test much more tomorrow and then shoot a football game Thursday.

Dealing with NewLeaf was a pain but I am very pleased with Adams Electronics. Fortunately I have a K1 as a backup and a K3 so I was able to be patient waiting for the repairs. My K1 had to go to Precision Cameras and I have to say that Adams Electronics was much more responsive and I would have no problem going through them again if I need repairs.

After having to postpone games the past two weeks, we had another football game last night. I really missed getting to shoot games in August and early September when there was still plenty of light through the first half or so. The lights were on by kickoff so I was shooting at 3200 ISO and using a flash. All with the K1 and Sigma 70-200 f/2.8.

Watching a field goal attempt. It was good.

The final score of the night was an interception at the 2 yard line that was returned 98 yards.

Another pair of shots of the ISS passing overhead on a beautiful clear night. Both taken with a K1 and a Rokinon 14mm f/2.8 lens. The first shot is a composite of four 20 second shots and I had to boost the exposure quite a bit in Lightroom to be able to see the ISS. The second shot is a composite of seven 8 seconds shots. Both were stacked together with Sequator.

This morning was a bit chilly compared to recent days, temps in the lower 60's. I'm glad I was shooting the meet and not swimming.

Thank you. I was really surprised that there were probably 20 cars parked at the location and lots of people milling around. I was glad to be able to get the shots with no one in the frame.

A couple of photos of a pretty well known tree on the Craggy Pinnacle Trail on the Blue Ridge Parkway. First shot is a pano from 3 shots using a flash since it was getting dark. K1ii with a Tamron 28-75mm at 28mm.

Different view of the same tree using a Rokinon 14mm f/2.8 lens. I didn't have the flash on so it was really dark. I processed it in Lightroom and Photoshop and like the moody effect.

I used a filter that I made a few years ago to shoot the solar eclipse. I bought a solar filter sheet and cut it out to fit a 77mm UV filter. I used Sugru to keep it in place. It's held up well for over three years now. I am thinking of replacing it with a regular solar filter.

I've tried several times over the past month and a half to get a shot of the International Space Station transiting the sun. There have been five passes within a 45 minute drive for me but the first four opportunities the sun was behind heavy clouds. Today I drove 35 minutes and arrived 20 minutes before the transit. The sun was in and out of clouds during the wait and with only five minutes left it was completely hidden. Fortunately the sun became visible again with just seconds left and I was able to get some shots. There were still light clouds over the sun so it wasn't as sharp as I would have liked. I shot with the K1 and Sigma 50-500mm in APC-C mode to get faster burst mode. The transit only took about 0.7 seconds and I got four shots with the ISS in shot. Here is a composition of the four shots.

A pair of photos from a similar spot.

First, a day shot at View Pink Beds Overlook on the Blue Ridge Parkway. I took this shot on our way home from a vacation near the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

Tonight I returned to the spot to get this shot.
