FA 85mm F2.8 Soft aperture questions

Yeah, I'm going to see if I can get out to the shop tomorrow with my camera and test it out. I won't be able to afford it until mid-April, but if I can haggle the price down due to the aperture, that would be great. :)

FA 85mm F2.8 Soft aperture questions

That's what I was hoping to hear. Considering how expensive these lenses can go, looking at the lens database, the price seems like such a steal. I love messing around with old lenses, and I really like the effect of soft lenses, even if they have fallen out of favor.

FA 85mm F2.8 Soft aperture questions

I recently found a small camera store near my house that has a case full of vintage cameras and lenses, and tonight I noticed they had an FA 85mm F2.8 Soft in pretty damn good condition. No obvious scratches on the elements, no visible fungus, no haze, and the aperture ring turns quite smoothly. Guy running the shop said that he's willing to part with it for $150 despite it being an expensive lens since he's had it so long.

However, I noticed that at the highest F-stops, the aperture blades don't make a perfect circle. When I'd crank the aperture ring all the way to F22, the bottom blade or two seemed to create more of an oblong, oval shape. At lower F-stops, the slight change in shape is hardly noticeable, but I'm wondering if this discrepancy is the reason the price is as low as it is.

Now for my questions:
Has anyone else gotten their hands on this lens with this same discrepancy? If so, how has it effected the shots taken with the lens?
Would this lens, despite this aperture blade problem, still be a steal at this price?
Would it even be worth the money to fix?

Thanks for any help!

The past few weeks the plums blossoms have been blooming and they've been beautiful!
I messed around with an old SMC Macro-Tak 100mm I have sitting around collecting dust.

I get comments all the time from my friends back in Nagano and Kumamoto about how heavy my Tokai/Gifu-ben is. I love it. :) Though since I've learned most of it from an older gentleman, I speak more like an old guy than I probably should. xD

Thanks! I loved the look on her face, I had to take it. :D

Thanks! I love using the fortunes tied around different objects (usually trees) at shrines for DoF experiments. This is probably one of my better attempts at it.

Do you use more MF or AF lenses?

I have more MF than AF lenses, but sadly I uses my AF more often. I'd like to use my MF more, but I need to get out and practice. It's still hard to get the focus I want without a focusing screen.

Haven't heard many cicadas here yet. Though my apartment is surrounded by rice paddies so I get lots of froggies at night. :D

Also, ちょっと無理 is one of my favorite phrases EVER in Japanese. That and practically every single part of the Gifu dialect.

Back in March, my husband and I traveled out to Oogata Shrine in Komaki City. The shrine is one of two in the city that hold big fertility festivals in March. Its sister (maybe brother would be more accurate given the nature of the festival) shrine, Tagata Shrine, is the more famous of the two festivals.

But I had fun taking photos and trying out my new Tamron 90mm lens. Definitely need to get more practice in with taking crowd photos.

Any comments and critiques would be gladly accepted. :)

Hey from Gifu! :D

Good to find another transplanter here. :D

I totally agree. I want my laundry to hurry up and dry. I hate rainy season, but it's fun to go take pictures of water droplets on flowers when it lets up!

Do you carry around your camera.....

I wish I could take my camera with me all the time. Some of the streets out to the kindergartens I travel to follow the rivers here in Gifu and on sunny days the water is such a deep blue surrounded by green mountains that I want to take pictures. If I wasn't afraid of my students breaking my camera during class (no way I can leave it in the car in this heat), I probably would bring it along more often.

I need to get a good point-and-shoot to keep with me like I used to. I really think I took better pictures with my old 3.2MP point-and-shoot Canon sometimes just because I was taking pictures more often.

The last thing I got was back in February (probably the last time I posted in the forums, too, thanks to work). My husband picked me up a Tamron SP Di 90mm Macro. It quickly became one of my favorite lenses this spring.

Oh wow! That's a lot of gum. I like your shot of the inside of an umbrella, and the tulips one is amazing!

It ends up that my Java plug-in was old which was why it wouldn't upload. I had the file at like 2MB, no spaces in the file name and exactly 1600px wide and it frustrated the hell out of me.

I currently only have the one up now, but I hope to get more up soon.

Pentax FA100 F2.8 vs Tamron 90 F2.8... Pentax vs Others?

My husband just picked me up a Tamron 90mm this past weekend. I got to try it out at the local park this past Sunday and I must say that I am impressed with it. Does seem to do a lot of hunting, but I think that was more of me forgetting to change the AF out of continuous than anything. But when it finds its target, it pretty damn sharp, and the 1:1 ratio is really nice.

Woo! Glad I got my new Tamron 90mm Macro just in time for this week. :D
Took this on Sunday. The local park is home to 50 different kinds of flowering Japanese plum trees.

I haven't adjusted anything on this. Straight out of the camera, just resized.

I've only had a desktop for about two and a half years now. Ever since I got into digital photography I did it all on an old Dell laptop. Was always concerned that the color on my screen was not what others were seeing, but now that I have a decent PC I'm glad to know that the colors are that different.

It's also a lot easier to do editing on a desktop with a good mouse than it is on a laptop with a crappy wireless USB mouse or touch pad.

Just curious if anyone here on the forums has submitted a photo to National Geographic's monthly Your Shot contest.

Recently a relative of mine convinced me to try submitting a photo I've taken in the past week to this month's contest.

Just wondering if any other Pentaxians have submitted anything, and if so, I'd love to check out their galleries. :)

Also would be appreciated if someone would explain why my photo just will not upload.:hmm:
