Thank you Lesmore49 - I tried to incorporate the environmental sounds as much as possible, pleased how well my rode micro picks up audio. :)

Robert52, it was practically tropical. When the sun broke through the clouds it was quite warm, but that was a fleeting moment, and I suspect the end of our summer already :)

Chooo Choo!

- So a couple of weeks back I had a go at photographing the Flying Scotsman on its way to Worcester (UK), unfortunately it didn't quite work.
Thankfully I managed to get a second chance a little later, the following little 5 min video captures the moment.

Main image shot with a Pentax K-1 + HD Pentax-D FA 28-105mm @ 28mm f/7.1 ISO 200 1/800th AFC / Burst shot --- Who said Pentax FF cant do action photography :)
I hope you enjoy.

First image processed from my visit to Weston Air festival on Saturday. I think I picked the best day to go. I heard that the Red Arrows called off their display 4 mins in on the Sunday

@deadJohn: Thank you. I thought the same as you, but i'm unsure if these boats are used occasionally rather than daily. Although there were many people milling about when I took the shot, this spot specifically was very quiet apart from a couple of well weather chaps, sitting on bricks enjoying a smoke about 40 meters to my right.... I didn't like to interrupt, I suspect my midlands accent would have given them some pause anyways :)

@lesmore49: Thank you again, I have a Marina local to where i live that might offer further experimentation, I'll need to plan something in.

@slowpez: Thank you - I'll post in inline in this thread if that suits, I think it will hold its own :)

Thank you for the comments guys, very much appreciated.

Geoff

Thank you Lesmore49 and Sailor. As I mentioned this image is quite a departure from my normal style, but I kinda like it. I think I'll post the B&W version at some point as I feel that might be the stronger image of the two. Anyways thank you for taking the time to comment.

Its been a while, and I have been if'ng and ah'ng on this image, between a crunchy colour image, a black and white, and a cinematic esk style (which i'm trying to resist at the risk of over doing it) - So with a departure from my usual stylle, I have gone for a punch in your face style... :)

South Gare is an area of reclaimed land and breakwater on the southern side of the mouth of the River Tees in Redcar and Cleveland, England.

Paddy's Hole is a small harbour constructed from slag in the lagoon on the Teesmouth side of South Gare. It is named Paddy's Hole because of the many Irishmen who helped build the South Gare

This inlet of the river provides a safe haven for small boats and fishing craft which are left high and dry in the mud at low tide.

However, the surrounding area is such a mix of contrasts. Teesport, oil refineries and chemical plants on the near horizon, sweeping views south across the sands to Redcar and the North Yorkshire coast and cliffs or north to Hartlepool and the Headland, the open sea, the river, sand dunes and mud flats, ships, small boats, fishermen’s huts, a lifeboat station, wildlife, birds and fauna and Eston’s ironstone hills on the far horizon and so much more...

Thank you. I really should stump up the cash for an official M42 adaptor though as mine doesn't lock in place, and the lens nearly went into the drink when taking that image.

Thank you Wing. Woodland is such a challenge for me. Even when conditions are in my favour I struggle to see a workable composition. Perhaps Oak woodland would lead to better images I dunno.

More opportunity for foggy woodland photography presented it self recently, and with a few hours spare I made my way down to the local river and woodland to photograph the trees and details in the early morning mist and fog that was hugging the meadows and woodland either side of river Avon in Pershore.

Although I didn't find the image I was looking for, I made use of my tried and tested process to come away with a series of images that I really enjoyed taking.
More often than not its the details that are more important rather than the bigger vision.

If you so inclined you can watch me struggle with this in my latest vlog. Woodland Photography | Fog, Trees & Details here >

DA* 60-250 mod for FF

Hey guys.
Huge thanks to all those that have commented on this thread and provide instruction and guidance. I have just completed the modification on my 60-250mm by removing the baffle and tube completely. I think the biggest concern is that the gearing and motors are now exposed greatly when changing lenses, which obviously in poor weather and conditions is something to pay extra care an attention too. If I can get my hands on one of the 3d printed replacements, I will re-mod to include the tube, I think this would give me more peace of mind.

Reasoning for the mod, for me at 200mm and above the vignetting on the K1 is too high and even in post I found I was cropping my images aggressively, and even with LR lens corrections it was still more than I really wanted. So hence trying the modification.

So I shot a before and after to see what sort of difference it makes i have attached the image below and uploaded a hi res version to flickr for those who want a closer look.
Please note this wasn't a scientific approach to testing. Simply 3x images with the default lens, focused on my monitor at 60mm F4 / 200mm F4 and 250mm F4 - Then performed the mod and repeated the x3 test shots at the same settings. So if anyone is interested here the results and findings...

60mm not much of a difference perhaps a slight improvement in general.
200mm / 250mm a huge improvement over the stock lens to my eyes and tastes

These images are straight out of camera, no lens corrections applied. I suspect the improvements would be even more pronounced with Lens Corrections applied.

I add all the locations I visit to my website (see signature), this includes directions and write up of the adventure plus some of the images taken. I generally get the ideas of where to photograph from locations I have seen featured on PF, google maps and other social media websites, books and magazines etc. Distance wise generally anything within 3 hours drive both ways is good for me. Prefer sunrises to sunsets so often its a very early start between 1am and 3am for most adventures

+1 for anything SIRUI - I use the SIRUI K-40X + W-2204 CF Tripod. Never have to worry about any lens or camera weight at any angle again.

Bulb Timer on LCD display

Ideally, K-1 id rather Richo had offered a single button press or proximity detection to disable the LCD at night. Alas this is perhaps for another feature request. Still, a toggle-able bulb timer display on the back of the main LCD I think would be very useful for the masses (see what i did there Weatfeild) lol :)
