Is this manual or auto-focus? If manual, why is the K3 in the pic set to AF ?

Question Rant: PF on mobile browser is not fun

Using Chrome on iOS 14 on an iPhone 8 plus, I made the mistake of checking Pentax Forums a couple of evenings ago.

First: Although I had my phone in Dark Mode, PF just about blinded me with white page backgrounds. Well, for that matter, I have my desktop browser in "dark" mode and PF is still blazing white.

Second: Ads are gigantic in size compared to content. And repetitive. And gigantic in perceived percentage of screen real estate.

In fairness, the forums loaded pretty quickly compared to other web sites.

All in all, the experience didn't motivate me to return to PF on my phone anytime soon. If that was the desired effect, congratulations!

End rant.

Pentax K-3 II successor on September 2020

Maybe *you* can't, but most people without an investment in one system or another will do exactly that. Someone looking specifically at a high end APSC DSLR will be asking:
  • Which one has faster AF?

  • Which one has the best burst performance?

  • Which has the best IQ?

  • How do they compare on price?

And heaven forbid they take "what kind of new 3rd party lenses are available" into account.

The only way to justify paying more for the Pentax is if it outperforms the current benchmarks. I have a hard time seeing that happen, since Pentax has yet to challenge Canon/Nikon on AF and burst performance in the APSC arena.

Pentax K-3 II successor on September 2020

In my opinion, unless the specs greatly exceed the D500 ($1500) or 7D mk II ($1400), setting the price higher than these two established APSC flagships will be a big mistake. And by specs I mean the things that complement the APSC format - AF performance, burst speed, buffer size, and buffer clearance. Assuming image quality is equal. Aside from dedicated Pentaxians, where is the value?

Sure, Pentax has IBIS. And the K-New will have more megapixels. Are those worth $500 to a first-time DSLR buyer?

How much are willing to shell out for Knew?

As others have said, how much I'd be willing to pay comes down to features.

The primary thing I shoot with my DSLR is wildlife. So I'm comparing features to other "wildlife" APS-C cameras, like the D500 and 7DmkII.
If Pentax wants D500 money (~$1500 MSRP) it'd better deliver at least D500 performance: 10fps minimum, with a buffer capable of holding at least 3 seconds of JPEG+RAW (more is better) and quick buffer clearing. I have my doubts as to whether Pentax can meet those marks - the K3ii came out after the 7DmkII but the Pentax burst performance doesn't quite get there.

Since you're crossing the K-New off your list, are you going to stay with Pentax, or will you be switching brands? What bodies are you considering that don't have this fatal flaw?

Of course, then we'd have complaints it won't hold a half-pint of single-malt Japanese whisky...

Pentax isn't dumb (are they?) so I fully expect to see some sort of phone tethering, with a hotshoe attachment for your phone, so you can have a flippy screen if you want one.

At least this officially puts it to bed, so the threads will hopefully be less crowded now that all the "I won't buy it if it doesn't have a flippy screen" folks have no reason to participate further.

I'm hoping for a pleasant surprise regarding the screen. Not that they will put a flippy screen on it, or a touch screen. But they'll have some "pair to my phone" function, so you can use your phone or tablet as a secondary screen. Maybe even include a hotshoe phone mount (or sell a 100th Anniversary Pentax hotshoe phone mount for $$$$ hahaha).

Anyway, if "no flippy screen" is the worst thing about the camera, I'm guessing they did a lot of things right.

For me, I like to shoot birds. For me to buy this body (and stay with Pentax) it's about FPS and buffer size. The 7D Mk II is 6 years old now - the 2020 Pentax APSC Flagship should at least keep up with the 2014 Canon APSC Flagship.

"most advanced APS-C flagship"

Most advanced how? To me it means "better than the 7D mk II or the D500" so can we truly expect burst performance better than 10FPS, RAW buffer more than 200 frames, RAW+JPEG buffer better than 27 frames? If so, count me in.

What does "most advanced" mean to you?

A couple from the USAF Thunderbirds' visit to Austin this week. Second one baffled me - I liked the composition but the colors were wonky. It was hazy and sun was harsh. Converted it to B&W and I like it a lot.
K-50, Sigma 170-500 at about 300mm, ISO 800, 1/2000, f/16.

Reviving this thread... From the web site it sounds like they repair the solenoid rather than replacing it? Is this what they do?

Thanks

Sticky: Dark exposure problems on K-30 or K-50? Discussion Thread

I was shooting the USAF Thunderbirds yesterday with K-50, Sigma 170-500. I popped a couple of test shots in my back yard and they were dark. Then messed with some settings and fired off a long burst and the first one or two shots of the burst were dark, then they were normal. This happened during the flyover, too. The first couple of shots of each burst were dark, then they were ok.

Should I just go ahead and order the solenoid now?

Aside:

No "bike enthusiast" ever used WD-40 on a chain. An "uninformed bike-owning dolt" might have. As far back as the 1970s and 1980s, bike shop mechanics (of which I was one) knew not to do this and we'd tell any bike owner that would listen not to do this. If you came into the shops where I worked and said you used WD-40 on your chain, we'd laugh at you and then help you choose something intended for that purpose.

Battery type/voltage and K-50 burst rate

I didn't test them for total number of shots, but the generic battery was at the right voltage and produced similar-enough fps to the branded one.

All my bursts were about 35 shots (it's hard to keep count by just listening while trying to hold the phone steady to take video) and my Pentax-branded D-LI109 was the only time my camera dropped into "buffer full" mode after 30 frames. I even confirmed the number of frames when I pulled the audio. All the other batteries I tested fired off at least 35 frames at full FPS.
