New Sony APS-C Sensor - 26MP

If you were an older photographer you will know why you want an EVF, only OVF/EVF can produce a view apparently couple feet away from the eyes to allow comfortable viewing, you don't want to hold your camera couple feet away to read the LCD, this not only look weird but also unstable and washout by sunlight, so that I insist to get a EVF model, youngters are different they can focus very close to the LCD.

IC, and Pentax still rely on Sony for sensor...

---------- Post added 07-06-19 at 01:25 PM ----------

"nobody uses Pentax for pro video" because Pentax does not offer that option yet, and I wouldn't care if Pentax decided to stick with stills only, but the fact is the 4/6K wave is killing everything else, no matter a pro shooter or a new comer noob they all want 4K nothing less. Pentax is not Lecia or Hasselblad that still can survive without 4K, simply we 'niche' a relatively small group of users may not possible to support the brand to live on, I am quite worry about that although I don't shoot video.

Video plug in possible ?

Hi there,

First of all I am not a video shooter know very little about it, this is just my random crazy thought about shooting high end video with Pentax.
Many shooters especially new comers to the hobby or profession will simply skip Pentax due to lacking of high end Videography capacity like 4K, even those rarely shoot video still want a 4K capable camera, and frankly hardly any camera in current production has no 4K and 6K consumer model has already arrived, I won't care even the next Pentax still has no 4K, but in order to survive Pentax has to do something.

As far as I know and understand shooting video does not need a very high res. sensor but the camera must have high processing power and memory still camera lacks, but will 'plug in' solve that ? I mean for example, a add-on AV grip with additional hardware like 4/6K processor and multi channel audio mixer and EQ.....etc., so that we have the option to spend more for video or keep it simple for still ? the idea may sounds silly, but what about to gear up the camera to make it handles like a real video camera, why not go for a standard video camera like the Canon XC-10 instead, that's silly too.

I am glad that I am not alone and not very wrong about how videography work thesedays, beside the flat profile many people looking for ways to create that "light streak" and lens flare often seen on footage shoot with traditional motion picture camera, as far as I know those effect are caused by imperfection of the lens and the shutter design of the camera which is not an intention and can reproduce with software.

Shooting motion is very different than shooting stills, we can not casually change the shutter speed and aperture so ND filter always needed, but we used ND a lot thesedays on stills where sometime seems unnecessary, I use ND only in two occasion, shooting the Sun and blur the running water. For what I see over the years, we photographer are splitting into two group, the Nitpicker/Pixel peeker which is the majority, try to train themselves to become a measuring instrument, technology is what they after, and two the Traditionalist usually older people, try to reproduce the image in the original puriest form without going too deep into the technical, there is nothing too wrong with both.

I remember my father said who was also an enthusiast of photography, some lenses are produced slightly uncorrected with intention, so to produce the kind of smoothness suitable for portrait, I believe he was right. Photography is a mix of technology and art in my mind, we want to have certain kind of image to satisfy our "emotional needs" in a particular moment, just like listen to music, and there are many kinds of music.

I can understand the reason for shoot flat, but this 'technique' seems to have 'abused', or some people don't understand the reason behind that. We spent thousands dollars invest on the best gears of the 21st century, but what we came up with was the footage of the 60s. Sometimes we want a vintage look in the footage so intentionally to shoot flat, this is not the only picture styles but has become the de facto standard or a norm in shooting video, we seems to have forgot the flat raw footage is not the final product.

Hi there,

Please excuse my ignorance, I am not a video shooter but there is something keeps bugging me and I don't understand.
I always see footage shot with 'flat' profile or how should I call it, the footage is so plain, low contrast dull color boring unattractive, I saw this even on commercials I don't understand why. The 'graded' version of the footage does not enhance the image only brings back the original detail so I wonder why we shoot 'flat' ?

Thanks for the detailed info. there is a lot to learn, like the old days bring a grey card and light meter would be much easier, digital actually make things complicated to use ! the only good thing is RAW there is room for adjustment.

CCD color ? what does it look like ? I heard CCD was better than CMOS in color rendition and resolution but power hungry, I also want to see the Foveon sensor color some day !

That's interesting thanks for the info., the exposure peaks at around f8-11 aligned with my finding, what is the setup you used to produce the middle green line that quite flat overall ?

I took some shots of flowers with the Jupiter 37A, they are not very sharp due to the wind and low light, but I always find that the red is over saturated on my K3 where other colors are quite natural, is this normal ? I got more natural red with cell phone.

I don't use Sony but owned couple Fuji before, the XE2 is very nice for adapting lenses too, I specially like the Fuji is the great IQ at high ISO up to 6400. the K3 is max at 1600-3200 before the image turn bad, auto white balance is excellent on the Fuji even at low light when compare with the K3, but I don't like the handling and menu design of the Fuji and gave up.

Thank for the advice guys, I tried and find out I don't even need to touch the green button to re-meter when stop down in Av mode, I can simply shoot straight that's convenient, but I still over exposed a little when stop down pls see the attached image.

The washout area as seen on the camera screen is much reduced in Av mode, so that I can safety reduce half stop to shoot in RAW to get a usable image, but I still don't know what caused the error, the focussing screen, the focal length of the lens, and the angle the light enter the screen may affect the metering , I will do some test with a wide angle lens to find out.

---------- Post added 05-07-19 at 09:18 AM ----------

Right ! those 3D looks and color rendition are hard to find in modern lenses. I happened to own a Contax with 85/1.4 for a short while and the image blown me away, I can't afford the whole line so I dropped and turned to cheaper alternative, since the m42 problem basically fixed I guess I will grab couple 'hot' lenses to try out !

Hi all,

I think I am done with m42 lenses due to 2 things, one is trouble to adapt, the other is metering problem.
I used mainly Russian m42 lenses due to they are plentiful in the used market and cheap, but also used some CZJ, they both
'suffer' from the same problem.

Everybody knows there are 2 types of m42 adapter for the Pentax SLR/DSLR, one is 'flush' type that fast to install and remove but does not focus to infinity, the other is 'sink' type that slow to install and remove but can focus to infinity, I have been struggling between the two for long time. I was using Nikon before Pentax, I used a 'flush' adapter with corrective lens built in to allow infinity focus, I don't see this type available for the Pentax, I would not use it due to the added glass degrades the image quality. Since Russian lenses has simplier design sometimes there is room for adjustment, for example the Jupiter 37A 135/3.5, I can simply remove 2 screw to force the lens to focus 'pass infinity', so that it can be used with the 'flush' adapter without problem. If I must use the 'sink' adapter I will remove the spring of the adapter so that it will not lock in the camera, and then I screw the lens in to get to infinity focus and glue the two together, if the back of the lens is wide enough to cover the locking pin, I will drill a hole at the back of the lens that touches the pin, with this little mod I can use the lens just like any regular K mount lens, but I still have a problem, the metering.

I shoot wth K3, I tried all modes including the 'green' mode and both spot and center weight for stop down metering but it didn't work as expected. I first meter wide open, say F 3.5 and take a shot, and then I stop down to F 8, meter again with the green button and take another shot, the 2nd shot always over exposed by 1-2 stops, I tried different m42 lenses with the same result, the over exposure was not by huge amount across stops it was just little over without washout the whole image. In order to get the best result I must shot wide open, or reduce 1-2 stop with compensation to hope it will come out right, since I shoot many close up flowers and bugs I must stop down quite a lot to cover the distance, this problem is particular trouble to me. Some said the problem was due to the focusing screen was not designed to meter stop down with uncoupled lenses, I don't know but this is the main problem stopping me from using m42 lenses, I wonder how you guys deal with that ?

I think this is common practice to produce lenses at 2 classes for different kind of users, the top of the line f2.8 pro one and the cheaper and smaller f4 one for general use, I am glad that Pentax has plan for a 70-200 f4 lens, also waiting for a 1.4 TC FF I want both WR. I don't see the benefit of having a huge f2.8 wide angle zoom given the high IQ in high ISO in modern camera, and the difference in DoF is minimal, f4 is about right in my book like the Sigma 24-105 is perfect to me. I love my 16-50 f2.8 but it is just too short for portrait it is an "embarrassing lens" to use, I would rather sacrifice one stop for added reach, especially I shoot outdoors mostly.
