Wondering if I got a good deal

the da 50-200 isnt too bad either imo if you dont have a wr lens like it. the 55-300 is def nicer but i enjoyed using my 50-200 and kinda miss the lightness. id sell the k50 and 18-55 and you basically got the 2 lenses for really cheap.

Pentax lens advertisements in Japan

what i dont like about them advertising the fa 77 is that they may not have plans to redo the fa limiteds as dfa's not that they would have plans to get rid of them altogether. WR dfa limiteds would be awesome and, unless they were more expensive and they continued making both, it could knock down the price of the current limiteds which would be nice.

DA 50mm 1.8 Advice.

one thing to practice when doing portraiture/subject isolation is the depth of the subject. like my dog from neck to tip of the nose is about a foot. if i want her whole head in focus i need at least that amount so i can stop down accordingly. you're shooting a 3d world so you need some depth of field. one discussion i learned a lot from was about an ideal f stop to obtain the "3d effect" and the consensus seemed to be just enough to get your subject completely in focus but to still blur the background. dof depends on how clsoe you are to the subject as others pointed out and the f stop. so like f5.6 will have more in focus than f 1.8. usually 1.8 is too thin to get the 3d effect bc only part of the subject is in focus. usually around f4?, depending on how much depth there is, is more of an ideal number. what you can do is set the camera to aperture priority and take consecutive snaps starting at 1.8 and working your way down to like f11 on different subjects and youll see the difference it makes. youll wind up deleting a lot of pictures but its a good visual. also if you only take one shot and its at the wrong aperture you missed a good shot so once u get the relative aperture you think youll want you can take one or two above and below that number and youll have a couple to chose from if the situation allows

Poll: Would you buy a lens with a broken mount?

depends whats broken probably...if its like p;astic mount and that cracked or metal bent or something you can relatively easily i think bc some ppl will switch out their plastic fantastic mounts for metal from donors, but if its like the mounting electronics i would think the contact would stay the same when you went to switch it out.

if you are doing fill flash outdoors you really wouldnt want to use a diffuser right? i like using something to diffuse(piece of paper probably wouldnt work well in your scenario so maybe a diffuser cover) indoors

Is the Vivitar 24mm f2 PKA as good as the Vivitar 28mm f2 PKA (Close-focus by Komine)

be careful of lenses from that time period manufactured by cosina i think bc of age related manufacturing defects. stick w komine i think. i have a komine vivitar 28mm 2.8 pka close focus and it is remarkably sharp. the only thing i dont like are the colors/contrast arent pentax colors/contrast im used to. otherwise the lens is possibly the sharpest i own.

---------- Post added 03-23-16 at 07:15 PM ----------

it was kiron im sorry not cosina thta had problems. cosina came later i think and arent as well regarded for their optics. the reviews on kirons said they may have been optically better but the problems outweighed the benefit. look at the reviews for the 28 2.8's it explains it

135/1.4 Mitakon for Pentax? What to do ?

i dont want to stir the pot too much again but my mans 3k investment plan wouldve been fine whatever if it wasnt for the absurd amount of other useless lenses that he has. (useless in that he has like 3 lenses covering each focal length in zooms each costing in the thousands and has probably almost all of the most expensive lenses you can buy in pentax) his collection is luxury car range of cost so you could say he got that instead of a relatively nice mercedes according to your pov which i can respect to a certain extent. i have strong doubts he doesnt even use half of them but that is not my concern or business as has been stated earlier and i dont care at this point. its his life. i just thought his carelessly throwing around the idea of dropping another $3k like it was no big deal is insulting as i sit here determining whether i can justify spending $300 on a lens because the funds could be appropriated better elsewhere and i am relatively well of compared to some that may happen upon this thread. but again, his money, have at it. just have a little tact and consider the situation others may be in before you gloat on about your decision whether to spend a measly 3k on another useless lens.

Lens - Decision

youre negating the reason behind having the full frame camera though because even with the TC you are going to be in cropped mode probably so youd really be at whatever 22-70 is like a 33-105 on aps-c and youd still only be using the cropped part of the sensor. if you have other lenses that are ff or are planning on getting some others then it makes sense. but if the 16-50 is mainly what you are going to be using it seems like ud be better off with whatever ur using or a k3 or a different lens(probably a 24-70 bc if youre fine with the focal length you might as well go for something of quality if you are going to be purchasing a ~2000$ camera but thats my opinion.) worst case scenario you can sell the 24-70 when something else comes out and lose out on a couple hundred $ maybe. at least the lenses hold their value relatively well.

what aperture did you take the picture at? you probably need to go with bigger number to account for the distortion like others said. this will give you a wider dof to work with.

can i have some of this money you apparently have to throw around on an absurd lens collection? what are u getting from it you arent getting from your A135/1.8 or your dfa 100 macro or 200 macro or 50 1.2 or 85 1.4 or 55 1.4 or the multitude of fast zooms covering that focal length other than the ability to put one more lens in your signature and the ability to tell ppl youve got it. make a lens and some friends out of all the money and youll have something u dont already have.

the hd 55-300 might be worth a look but the af hunts a lot sometimes. at $250 new its not really a big investment compared to like 1k$. with american football depending on the angle and all i dont see mf being exceptionally difficult depending the situation but if u were to af then a zoom would be nice to frame better on the fly instead of having to crop. outdoors the 55-300 should be plenty fast to bump ss up without bumping up iso. i use it on beach with my dog and unless shes coming right at me af is pretty snappy. with football ud be far enough away that the focusing range shouldnt be so wide that it should struggle too much especially if u are already focused to that relative range already. the hd has quick shift too. great lens for cost but if u wanna go for the big guns go for it.

K3 or K3II

"For all other purposes the K3 will do just fine (the AF improvements are mostly implemented in 3d tracking of moving objects and shouldn't make much difference in real world scenarios)"

from one of the threads listed above. i dont see how that wouldnt absolutely translate to real world scenarios rather than say lab tests unless all you shot was stuff that didnt move in a 2d setting. lol this would be of relative importance to me because i shoot stuff like surfing or my dog which apparently dont exist in the real world because they are moving objects that need to be tracked in 3d environment. im wondering if anyone has any experience with this. (im sure its not an easy thing to discern) im not sure the difference is a100$ to maybe 200$ difference bc i might consider going used for k3.

wouldnt u still need to shell out the $$ for the wifi card? or r u saying the gps feature would replace your wifi needs? i guess it was a matter of either space but i think they shouldve put wifi in the k3ii too like ks2. i know the flucard accomplishes the same thing but mobile control of the camera built in would be nice for remote triggering. i have a shoe mounted remote trigger and i like it aside from the batteries and bulkiness.. and the wireless triggers are a pain bc u need to have it showing in the picture pointing at the camera and click it a billion times listening closely for the shutter at any distance.

also do u have an eyefi or flu card?
if flucard how is the remote operation with it if uve used it?

doesnt make sense to have b&m anymore. inventory doesnt move quick enough to keep up with the times while having relevant samples on hand so ppl can actually get a feel for them and with so many reviews out there most people make their decisions based on that rather than personal experience. canikon can survive in best buys, targets, costcos, and bj's because they have enough volume moving it seems. but that might not even be the case. i was surprised target had k50's at one point. im really surprised to see those stores aside from best buy having cameras >1000$ in stock. seems like a poor marketing decision to me. who buys a 1000$ camera from a target?

Pentax 55-300 replacement?

i have the hd 55-300, never had da version but had da 50-200 which i would imagine would render color similarly from similar coatings but the hd coating is like hd vision glasses. get a pair for 10$ or look at the infomercial and youll see what i mean. it adds a (imo) pleasing touch that is sorta like a polarizer but not. like sunglasses, it doesnt take the place of polarization though. if you try those sunglasses youll see what i mean. things are more contrasty and pop more i guess. probably makes more of a difference in ideal settings like a perfect santa monica day to bring out the warm clarity. its nice on the beach here in nj even in winter but ive only used it in pretty bright conditions and i usually couple it with a polarizer too. when i used it in overcast conditions in florida it still rendered color pretty well though

HD vs SMC 55-300 on Full Frame

sorta unrelated but i think itd be worth your money to get the hd version because the cost isnt that much different with them being ~250 new as opposed to a used dal-l that might be 100$ cheaper. the da versions usually fall around 180-200 when i was weighing my options of these lenses. its new, its improved, its wr... all for 50$ more. no brainer and havent looked back/so glad i got it.

Rokinon 24mm f/1.4, Samyang 24mm f/1.4, HD DA 21mm f/3.2 or Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8?

with video the samyang/rok would probably be best bet bc you dont need af and they are nice to mf. size wise the da would obviously be much smaller if thats important but you lose a lot in aperture. the zoom would possibly be nice too bc you can zoom if need be but if you have it on like a "rig" that would take that out of the picture. idk if like an external focusing ring would work too well w the da 21 if the focus ring is small if you use one of those. ppl usually say they are pretty small on those lenses so even trying to mf with video in general might prove challenging. ive never handled a da/fa limited so idk but i have an 8mm rokinon and its mf is nice even though you really dont need it w such a large dof.

expecting a lens like that to be super mega sharp wide open seems a little like a reach as far as expectations. id hate to see what you expect in a first date. very narrow dof at that focal length. also youre getting atmospheric interference at that length probably too.

catch in focus may not work if the OP's camera is focusing and the shot is OOF. center focus might help if the subject is in the middle of frame.
