K-1 MK2 Long Exposure Performance

Been experimenting a bit with long exposures. Not yet final conclusions but MK2 is working like KP in this genre - very low random hot pixel amount. Here is an example:

5 minutes @ ISO100. I could find only 4 hot pixels in Lightroom after a longish zooming session which is ridiculously low. The file survived heavy-handed postprocessing in Silver Efex.

It is good idea to try Nik Raw Presharpener plugin. It can be set to edge enhancement mode and results are similar depending on amount of sharpening.

Let's see when PEF support comes to lightroom. It is superior platform for standard pixel shift without motion correction. I will not ever use DPS feature. And no, nothing is debunked, this same thing can be replicated with similar targets every time. ISO800 image does not look better, it just has more microcontrast thanks to some form of edge sharpening in the areas which are in focus. So ISO800 shot has both cookings - blur & edge sharpen.

Here are the two DNG files (image has focus in dead center, target is a blanket of sheep fur, the rabbit was not available anymore and has decomposed away quite badly): 2018-04-17.7z - Google Drive

That series which I posted on the finnish forum was another case which had nothing to do with ISO100 pushed to ISO800.

@Kunzite: Why would you compare cropped jpg images? I mentioned that you shall have the DNG files. I am 250km away from my offline file storage at the moment.

Just load those two to irfanview or some such editor and cycle them. It does not require 100% perfect eyesight to see differences. Just a device which shows actual pixels. Like standard desktop monitor. Not retina or cellphone screen.

Posting so wide images on the forum makes them soft due to automatic downscaling. And this causes the first one to appear soft while it may not be. Wide side limit has been 1100px or some such number.

KP is weird one. Just get it and try extremely long exposures. Results are as good if not better than K-1 mk1. No way it is only the new 24MP Sony crop sensor doing that. KP sensor is also in Fuji X-T20 which I had for few months last year and it is nowhere close with long exposures (very noisy after 30 seconds).

Correct. This has nothing to do with underexposing on purpose but instead emulating shooting ISO800 by using ISO100 and by doing that bypassing whatever filtering might happen at ISO800. And the result so far supports this.

I lost photographically good images thanks to Sony filtering back in 2015. I never expected Pentax to go that route. And I have only one purpose for a digital camera - to produce something usable when 4x5 cannot be operated in satisfactory manner to keep quality up. My standard print size is 1 meter wide and up from there and this looks like something that actually will show up. Now I know I will use max ISO400 in any case, also in astrophotography with this new mk2.

The purpose of the comparison was based on the idea that no filtering happens at base ISO and when boosted one can use ISO invariance capabilities to crank up the exposure and avoid any damage done by overzealous filtering.

To be fair, if scene has large depth of field no-one will see anything strange. Only when printing large and using high ISO the *current* DNG conversion with Camera RAW is tricky, or Raw Therapee for that matter. I can reproduce this finding with any image where there are lot of high frequency content and thin depth of field by using ISO800+. Hairy subjects seem to be good canditates.

Firmware update would be nice with on/off setting for this magic chip. Post-processing easily produces as good or better results with right tools.

Above crops have LR detail module turned off. If something still happens by Adobe, then it is Adobes fault too. I just do not recall seeing similar behaviour with files from my previous mk-1 bodies. Maybe PEF support works better then.

I can share the RAW files tomorrow when I get back home. In DNG format (straight from camera ofc). Then you can play with them as you wish.

I found out what happens, at least with DNG files. Not yet camera RAW support for PEF files. The effect is very subtle but manifests itself with images where there are near-sharp details around sharp areas. ISO100-ISO400 are fine but after that, camera performs some form of edge enhancer function AND starts to blur out areas which are not 100% in focus.

Here is a crop from -3EV ISO100 exposure which is boosted 3 stops:

Here is same scene with 0EV ISO800 exposure:

Switching back and forth between the two the effect reveals itself. Boosted ISO100 exposure has tiny amount of more noise but keeps fur details intact in out-of-focus areas. ISO800 exposure starts to melt the areas almost in-focus but not fully so. This is why the original dead rabbit crop looks messed up. This is ISO100-400 camera for tripod use and to keep maximum details one should push the exposures in post.

I add this difference of the two image layers (calculated in photoshop):

It is more easy to see which areas are affected and they are the out-of-focus areas while sharp areas stay near black.

Upper crop was with default sharpening & settings (noise reduction sliders turned to 0) as per Lightroom 7.3. Here is example from RawTherapee 5.4 which has support for MK2, I did not touch any settings just exported the file and cropped to jpg.

All fur which should have good details at this ISO have melted together. Can anyone with both Mk-1 and Mk-2 compare their results? I do not recall mk1 doing anything like this. Gonna check with PEF file next. Maybe it is DNG which causes problems.

Yeah, so...

I took this as a part of my new series.

K-1 mk2, Samyang 35/1.4 (perfect sample), ISO800, DNG RAW, Lightroom 7.3 default sharpening settings

Closer look at lower left corner:

Horrible pixel level quality @ ISO800 (looks like cellphone image) from a sensor which gave a lot better results back in 2012 in D800(E) Nikon body. This is looking like filtering what happens with Sony A7x bodies after 3.2second exposures. Some examples of Sony filtered mess @ 100% crop:

Upper Sony crop is from a distant landscape, lower is part of a sand pile filtered to mush. That crop from K-1 MK2 is not far off. Everything in the crops are in perfect focus with lens stopped down far enough.

Just some thoughts since I got the mk2 on wednesday. Why should I write the same happy-happy joy-joy messages 95% of PF-members expect of a new Pentax model that have already been written? These are just digital soulless devices which deserve no more than they are worth. Every brand puts them out at steady pace.

Nah, with frozen stiff fingers and/or gloves muscle memory fails very quickly. K-1 is specialized camera for special function, mainly shooting in dramatic weather, long exposures and nightscapes. All the additional functionality (bulb timer, astrotracker, leds) and pixel-stiff scream that out loud. There are enough standard DSLR and MILC builds for ADHD street photography and AF purposes. With few enhancements K-1 would approach perfection in its genre. Few features with FW upgrade please: sensor shift bracketing and extra display gain with dropped FPS (Sony type slow shutter) to compose in darkness.

That is salt water/mineral water corrosion damage seen on those pictures. I have had it happen two times and both times the damage was too bad for a reasonable repair operation. First time I fell into river with D800E and last year I slipped into the sea with K-1. Nikon actually worked for few days after 2 days of dry-up period but then died for good.

Gosh! Such lack of vision. Backlit buttons, once you use them with a Nikon, are godsend feature for night shooting. Every model lacking those should be automatically reviewed with lower score.

OVF shutter, not a huge change but a must for long exposures. Now we have some leftover plastic residue as a cap. Incredibly futile and falls off easily.

Of course it is not cheap to alter the body but the parts needed are just few $. It is completely nuts not to expect major enhancements for MK2 model. These parts cost next to nothing but would provide massive improvement in user experience.

There is no problem with a tripod. Why use such weird feature when the primary issue is basically if subject is static or not? Limited R&D resources should have been used to simple and effective enhancements like real backlit buttons. Or OVF shutter piece. Come on, it is MK2! These would have been 3$ enhancements.

Now we have a mystery chip which seems to filter image in unknown way. Not sure yet, but there seems to be hints of Sony style spatial filtering which kicks in with moderate-to-high ISO values and long exposures. This messes up tiny texture details.

It is possible that lightroom only uses the first frame. Same processing lag is still there though as if using PEF PS files from MK1. Dang, have to take few more tests with/without PS. Pity that there is no PEF support yet for mk2.

@biz: I just wanted to edit the previous post instead of making a new one.

Nope, I have no lenses with AF except 35mm macro ltd but I will not go there. I may have 77mm ltd by the end of this week or 100mm WR. But all those are screw drive so not the best ones to try out.

EDIT: Holy cows!!! Adobe has done something in silence with pixel shift files. I took DNG RAWs with MC disabled and lightroom 7.3 almost 100% fixes everything which moves. Moving cars look like mess on camera screen but almost zero issues when viewed in lightroom.

I just received my unit and smashed the shutter button a bit. It sounds a bit more "softer" than mk1 or maybe I got used to KP too much. No change in overall performance, very sluggish when writing pixel-shift files to the card. Grip is not creaking or making other strange noises yet. Articulating screen made me smile a bit after using KP for quite some time.
