Pentax K1 manual is 140 pages when Pentax K5 manual is 380+ pages, why?

Well, like most manuals, it's a reference. :)

And references aren't suited for beginners. They're not tutorials, they assume prior knowledge of photographic concepts.

This is why I recommend the late and great Yvon Bourque's books for people to learn from, and if this site can carry on his tradition so much the better!

Love or loathe camera clubs/societies?

Like any recreation hobby, clubs vary as to how serious/active/worthwhile they are. Many in Australian cities are part of a state structure and are oriented towards competition, like a tennis club or similar - they don't interest me. The more informal groups on meetup.com have proved more useful for me.

Yeah, I'm looking after sites where hundreds of laptops, desktops and tablets are purchased and deployed, and they have to be interoperable and centrally managed. In the covid lockdowns, suddenly Cisco Webex licences were bought by the bosses and needed to be rolled out, for example.

Secretly, those bosses of course love BYOD, that's an expense that gets taken on partially or entirely by the employee or customer. :)

I think your ISO is too high and you're too far away with the camera, Mysterick! :)

I don't think it's a case of missed focus, nothing is sharp in these pics.

A good guideline is to not go above ISO1600, stick with ISO 800 as much as you can manage. Noise reduction is processing that destroys details, so you want as little of that as possible.

The time of day looks bad, and that's something you can control. Can't see sharp shadows, so these are poor conditions, too. I think people who might think that the quality of light in early morning and late afternoon is only important for landscapes are mistaken.

IMHO, it hasn't been that way for years. :)

The current Mac OS is left behind, it's simply not touch aware the way Windows has been for some time with what was called the Metro interface.

Apple gave up on its own OS a long time ago. It chose to reskin BSD Unix. It did have the option of being different - it could've developed Jean-Louis Gassee's BeOS, but didn't.

And the hardware is Intel based now, just like PCs.

Having implemented and rolled out both Windows and Macs on large sites, IMHO the last time Apple products were better as a SOE was perhaps twenty years ago.

That's different from being a niche choice. Still plenty of justification there. But even in graphic design, video production and photography - what were Mac strongholds in the 1990s - there are PCs everywhere these days, too.

And as Pentaxians, we're all about niche choices, right? :)

Again, Kendra, I think you're describing a person, perhaps not very bright, perhaps not very artistic, not the technology itself. :)

A camera being able to tether output to a 7" monitor to achieve critical focus in the field can't possibly affect an owner who is unaware of that capability. If they were always limited in their ability and ambition, they'll stay limited in their ability and ambition, IMHO, and they'll keep doing what they used to do.

Yes, but those shots - excellent portraits - are unusable for the client, because they distract from the clothing that needs to be promoted. The photo ends up being about her and not the product.

For instance, it is uncommon in fashion photography for the model to be looking at the camera, because that's where our eyes tend to travel to first.

You prefer advertising pictures, House?

You know so many people who do commercial photography like that are frustrated with their lives, right? :D

And the worst thing about it, is that after a week of taking pictures of garments or living rooms or whatever, they can be drained and not have the motivation to take the photos they really want to do at the weekend.

Wedding photographers too, can end up in a real funk, an existential crisis.

Mike, I think it's as easy as when you finish up getting the shots you need, to spend the last minutes of the session doing something along those artsier lines, something that was not part of the original objective.

After getting Nicole here some shots she could potentially submit in a model portfolio, we did this. It couldn't be included in those, because they're business-like, and this has a spirit that's not required. But it was more satisfying for us both than the original objective, I think. Social media use, not for an agency!

Well, the world certainly has both types, Mike!

I would pay to see an Elena Shumilova exhibition, but probably not one by my local real estate photographer.

Unless it was of his own personal, passionate projects, rather than the results of his 'phone it in', risk-free, by-the-numbers hack work his employer expects. Life is too precious to spend an evening out looking at that stuff.

I think you've not described the technology, you've described a poor artist, Kendra!

Classical guitarist John Williams had nothing but appreciation for the sustain of the electric guitar when introduced to it. Daido Moriyama has had no problem shooting his monochromatic Japanese street photography with either analogue or digital Ricoh GRs. With Rolling Stone, Annie Liebowitz was a spartan film photographer in the Richard Avedon mold but crossing to Vanity Fair became a constructor of elaborate digital composites. After surgery in his seventies, Matisse couldn't stand up for long to paint so turned to cutting out collages of coloured paper in his final years.

I think a true talent, whatever their age and background, recognizes new possibilities and puts their foot down on the accelerator pedal.

I think the dull craftsman continues to turn out the same pictures of roses as they did in 1981. :)

Not sure I understand, Kendra.

Doesn't additional technology give additional options for an artist?

Have a look at the Oscar winning black and white Mexican kitchen sink drama 'Roma'. It's full of CGI, for example. :)

Isn't, say, black and white medium format film, a small subset of creative possibilities?

Come on, LL, did you actually read it? :)

His printer works just fine on his daughter's Windows 10, so it's not an OS issue, it's something else about his individual setup or hardware.

You may not have noticed, Barondla, but Windows 10 comes with built in emulators, for Windows 8, Windows 7, Vista, XP, 98, 95, DOS, even. You can even run various Linux applications from your desktop if you install the subsystem for Linux. It's not an emulator, has a real kernel.

As always, there will be some programs from the past that don't work because they use hardware or make a call that the emulator hasn't simulated. Deliberately, perhaps, because the program attempts something no longer considered secure or badly affects performance and stability (eg Adobe Flash is heading that way!).

I've got the FA35 and use it for manual focus on my Sony A7 - it's very good.

Manual focus and manual aperture were part of the normal photographic routine for decades, if you have a love of the hobby, you can do both very quickly, especially with focus confirmation in the OVF and focus peaking/magnified Live View on the rear display.

Same. I also use mine as a guitar FX pedal, and an audio interface to my laptop.

The importance of an audio interface for real time recording is that it doesn't have the lag of a computer's normal microphone and speakers.

'Subpoenaed' and 'sequestered' are unlikely words to appear in a pub rock song, but Minnesotans The Hold Steady don't seem to care.

The Joke Thread

"Jerry was hired to play his trumpet on the score of a new movie, and he was excited because he had two long solos. After the sessions, Jerry wanted to see the finished product, and asked the producer where and when he could catch the film. A little embarrassed, the producer told him it was a pornographic movie.

A month later, Jerry went to the theatre with dark glasses and his collar up, and sat in the back, hunched low in his seat next to an elderly couple, who also seemed to be hiding.

The movie started and it soon proved to be the filthiest, most perverted porno flick he'd ever seen. Embarrassed, Jerry turned to the elderly couple and whispered, 'I'm only here for the music.'

'That's okay,' the woman whispered back, 'We're just here to see our dog.'
