I'm with Russell. Just another way to perpetrate the myth that it's the camera. The comparisons offered are sometimes completely different. Then you have to judge, Am I selecting photo technical or artistic quality in the shot. For that comparison you probably should just look at exposure, focus and colors rather than composition if you are only judging the camera. Still a fun little exercise.

I received my collection of G Series lenses for my Nex7 this week (28,45 and 90) and have been playing with them when possible. When possible has been a quick run out to the garden during my lunch hour at home. Not even sure which lens did what at this point. Hope to get some time with them this weekend.

So far I'm happy with the focusing system considering how it is a bit of a kludge. But the quality of the lenses and the glow and bokeh give me a happy. Not great shots but they give me an indication of the possibilities when I have time to get out and shoot. It's a bit of a pain to use cornerfix on the 28 shots but well worth the effort in the end.

Little Trike a day later....

Great Shots Emacs (although I'm better with vi).. Love the sky shot..

All I have to say after tonight is I'm not regretting switching to the Nex. Went to see my absolute favorite musical artist James McMurtry tonight in Roanoke Va. He's the best songwriter around IMHO. Took my Nex7 and my MD 50 1.4. Sitting on the 4th row, these are right out of the camera jpegs.

I left the friendly folks here almost two years ago and went to Nikon. Well I'm dropping the Nikon and going fully to the Nex system with a Nex7. I'm loving being able to use all of the old pentax glass with it.

And it gives me an excuse to hang out with you fine folks again..

I've owned quite a few lenses in the last few years including some of the limiteds and some fine Nikon zooms. I think that the SIgma 19 & 30 are as sharp as those lenses. Not quite the color pop but they still blow my mind.

But this one doesn't show the performance. I just liked the look of this one right out of the camera on monochrome mode. Too shallow DOF and terrible light actually worked IMHO.

Then I got home and saw a little bluebird in a redbud. Went in and grabbed my old Takumar 200F4. The Nex7 should not be considered a camera as much as it is a digital back..

Nikon tele zoom or back to Pentax

I switched from Pentax to Nikon a couple of years ago. While I found that for situations that required fast AF the Nikon won but it didn't compare to my Pentax primes for 'the look'. A couple of months ago I decided to pick up a NEX7 and have started using it with some old old school manual focus primes. The quality of my photography as well as my love of the process has returned. The primes on the Nex are the best system I've ever used, because of the selection of lenses available for use with adapters. But in the long run I think that primes are the secret no matter what the body. And Pentax and the Nex both have a lot of flexibility. I've started thinking of the camera as just a digital back, and I look for something that can work with the best selection of glass.

I do have the 80-200 AF-S and it is an awesome zoom that has the best look of any zoom I've used. But I'm considering selling it along with my D300 and the rest of the Nikon kit so that I can get some better quality primes. I rarely use long lenses and when I do I primarily shoot subjects that don't require AF. I took out an old 200F4 screw mount today and the sharpness blew away the 80-200 and D300 combo.

Go primes, have you tried any good primes with the D600?

Nikon vs pentax

I've been with Nikon for about a year now. I occasionally miss my limiteds but overall I'm very happy with the results of the switch. As Francis said above if AF is important there is no comparison. I've done some recent auto racing and cycling shooting and I'd say that maybe 1 out of 25 or 30 were out of focus compared to about 30% when in the same situation with my K-x. Part of that could be that there were no focus indicators on the Kx but the D300 AF works much better than the Pentaxes that I've used (K20,10 and Kx). I'm sure the newer bodies are better but I doubt they compare to the nikon af system. But if I was sticking to landscape and other photography where fast AF wasn't important I'd probably go with pentax. I still miss my DA15..

OH I understand. If I wasn't planning on getting the X100 I'd grab the X10 before our trip. But as an old fan of the Yashica Rangefinders I've had a woody for the X100 for a long time, when the Missus says it's ok I don't pass up the chance..

Well it looks like I won't be takin the D300 on my trip. I've decided to go small, but after talking to the wife last night we've decided to go with just the G11 and enjoy our anniversary cruise and vacation. The difference between the G11 and X10 don't really justify a purchase right now. Especially since she's ok'd the purchase of an X100 when my bonus arrives a couple of weeks after we get back.... Win...

I am SOOO close to picking up an X10 for my upcoming vacation. It's our 20th anniversary and we're going on a cruise and then a week in New Orleans. I could take my D300 and a couple of lenses but having to take it around when just walking seems like a pain. And it's just too big to take out at night when on Bourbon street. I also want to make sure the focus of the trip is our anniversary rather than photos. I just bought my wife a G11 and she's taking it along. I'm getting a bonus and the Missus has approved the purchase of an X10 or some glass. I'm loving the idea of the X10 as a nice P&S and street photography camera. I'm feeling guilty about having a DSLR and some decent glass and the thought of leaving it behind. Somebody relieve me of my guilt...

Yes, I'm shooting Nikon now but I still love the people around here.

Lens setup for a D300

I've got the Tamron 17-50 2.8 VC and I love it with my D300. Basically my favorite lens. I'm on a budget so I'm running with the cheap stuff, 70-300, 35 1.8 and the 18-105. And personally I'm pretty happy with that setup for now. I have tried the 70-200 2.8 VRII and would sell a child for it if I had any. I think that the 17-50, 70-200 + something long for wildlife would be perfect for me..

Anybody else been seduced??

I was seduced about a 6 months ago after a long flirtation and come-hither looks.

Reasons for my move:
1: I was a bit worried about the Ricoh buyout. Not a major problem but it did concern me a bit. After looking at the CES show stuff I'm feeling that this may have been a valid worry.
2: I just couldn't get that sharp pop that I wanted with my K-x, even with limiteds including the FA-31. I'd aligned lenses with the debug menu etc but it just didn't happen. I think that it was partially the lack of focus points, even though I used center point & recomposed. It may also have been shutter vibration etc.
3: I could find more used lenses and equipment for Nikon on craigslist etc.
4: Lower prices on SDM type lenses and a MUCH bigger selection. I loved the silence and fast focusing.
5: Better flash performance.
6: A lot of my close friends used Nikon, and gave me some prices I coulndn't refuse on good used equipment. Considering the cost of upgrading to a K-5 or even a K-7 it wasn't much of a financial jump to move over.

Impressions After the Move.

I got a used D300 from a friend and after the initial shock of the size of the thing compared to my K-x I fell in love. Great controls, menu and feel. It seemed to fit my hands better after a bit of adjustment time. It just feels natural.

It also focuses. It does a much better job at hitting focus in all conditions than any of my previous Pentax's (K10-K20-Kx). It was also much easier to see the viewfinder data than with the Pentax bodies. I absolutely love the motorized lenses and the through the lens VR is great. It's nice to be able to see the effect and have a nice still image on the viewfinder. Yes the lenses are more, but as someone else said earlier I'm happy with the lens selection that I have more than I ever was with my Pentax Kit. I've got a 18-105VR, 70-300VR, 35 1.8 and a Tamron 17-50 2.8 VR and I'm pretty happy with that setup. I did try the 70-200 2.8 and that alone is a good reason to switch IMHO. Overall I get much sharper and much more well exposed shots from the D300, the metering and focus are much more accurate.

Misses by Nikon.

Not many, I do miss my DA-15 and wish they had something similar. They don't have a really wide prime that compares. Otherwise, not much. And the Nikon forums just aren't as friendly as this joint.

Bottom Line.

I am getting better photos. I think that part of it is confidence, part easy to get what I want from the camera. But I am seeing better shots from my new kit. Do they compare to a lot of the stuff here? Not even close, it's still about the nut behind the viewfinder.

Canon PowerShot G1 X Hands-on Preview

I think it's a killer for the price. I just bought a used G11 and overall like it but I was jonesing for an X10 or X100. This may be a better compromise without the sexy looks. The zoom of the X10 with the APS-C sensor and at least some kind of optical viewfinder.

And as for the slowish lens, to get a 2.8 with that range of focal lengths would make this thing would probably be bigger than a K-5 with a 16-50 just based on the physics of making a fast lens. Overall I think ti's a tempting little baby..

Handling Differences between Pentax and other brands

As a switcher to Nikon who still hangs out with the nice kids around here I'll put in my two cents.

I loved the interface on my K-x, more than the K20D. I've played with Canon and found their interface and controls confusing and just plain odd. And the entry level Nikons weren't much better. In the entry level cameras nobody comes close to the Pentax interface.

But moving up the chain I love the controls and interface on the D300. It took a while to get used to the reversed control wheels and a couple of other quirks but I was able to shoot a wedding after having it only two weeks and felt comfortable.

In the long run, you'll get used to whatever you use.

I've gone to the dark side (Nikon) but still hang around here a lot because of the great people.

I've done a few shoots as a volunteer photographer for the local Symphony (Lynchburg Symphony Orchestra) and they've used some of my photos on their website. The director said that they were going to use some of my photos on the new 2011-2012 brochure. I happened to find one today when downtown. Except for a couple of small pieces of clip art it was all photos that I had taken including the cover. And they even gave me credit for the photos. Made my day..:D

Folks, I think I'm out. I've already missed 3 days and I'm busy with a lot of things on my plate right now. Unless I have the time to shoot my shots AND be able to return the favor of commenting on others shots I don't think I'm doing the contest justice. I'll keep peeking in from time-to-time though. Have fun!

I survived yesterday. Ice and compression helped, and the adrenaline of shooting my first wedding helped shield the pain. I finished up around dinner time and just collapsed. I actually think I got some decent shots. I did it for free as he's a good friend, and I'm sure the groom got what he paid for. So I missed my SIA weekend shots. I've got something crappy from Friday to post and hopefully I'll get back in the groove later today.
