If I were to take the example as set out by the OP. I'd have to go with the APS-C sensor. If we had a crackin' body that was similar to the D2X (i.e high end APS-C), then all pro level guys would be satiated and the measurbators would go silent. This would then allow Pentax to take the time to develop a FF sensor and the supporting lenses for it.

Also to note that it is stated in the Photozone review that the Sigma has a slight centering issue which hurt the corner sharpness.

I thought my A lenses were solidly built especially my 70-210. If you cracked someone over the head with it, it'd knock em out.

My 2500 word essay on the K20D

If Pentax built a camera from 1986 with a sync speed of 1/100 of a second. Tell me how hard it could have been in 22 years to seriously increase that figure beyond 1/180 of a second like other manufacturers have done. Besides, the K20 can move that shutter 21 FRAMES per second in the 1.6 MP mode. With that kind of frame rate they could have raised the sync speed.

I'm sorry mate but I totally disagree with your philosophy; comparing Pentax to a specialized Hasselblad. Inferring that it will always been useful for only certain kinds of photography. I also think you forget how long ago the MF days really were. This is not 1978 or 1984, AF has been around for 20 plus years. If I'm going to shell out several hundered if not thousands of dollars, for a brand new camera system I want my AF to be there right quick and in all conditions. I expect it to be a sublime process of the camera. Not some involved focus, check, recompose, take the picture sort of deal.

I think its absolutely daft to think that us critics of the new camera were expecting D3 esque features. Full frame, ISO 25,600 nor 11 fps were never the anticipation; not at least from my perspective. The hype surrounding by those who were in NDA lead us to beleive that this was a more comprehensive package addressing other issues beyond IQ. The IQ from what I've seen is bloody fantastic but the question remains how often will one be able to acheive such results? Unless conditions are perfect (which they rarely are) how will one acheive consistent, great IQ when shooting a band at a night club? A wedding? Sports? That beautiful sensor is still using K10D AF, K10D Sync Speed, K10 FPS (short of that 21 fps gimmick), K10 P-TTL Hardware. I was personally happy with K10D IQ, I really wanted the rest of the camera to be upgraded and therefore that is the source of my discontent. I think Pentax users have ended up with the equivilent of a 1970's Italian supercar in the K20D. Vexing but once everything works right it'll probably blow you away.

I still want one.

Once more, thanks Chris for the review.

My 2c on the K20D.

For me its not quite earth shattering. I applaud the better IQ tweaks such as better ISO, dynamic range and such. On the other hand, the AF system, FPS and Sync Speed are disappointments. I know Pentax wanted to have something out there to stay competitive but these were also areas that needed improving upon just as much as IQ. For the Strobists, 1/180 sync is a bit low and just accepting the failings of the current AF system seems asinine. What good is my ISO 3200 if I can't focus on my subject when I need to use such a high sensitivity?

That being said, the improvements that have been made are reason enough to get one; gotta start saving!

I just bought my 540 not too long ago as well. I found that turning the custom setting "AE-L with AF locked" to on has dramatically improved P-TTL capabilities though Auto is perhaps the most consistent. More testing will have to be done on this...

Pentax's Canadian headquarters is a stone's throw from my house. In late November I went to drop off my FA 50 for a focusing adjustment. Since the adjustment was going to be covered under warranty, the paperwork involved was time consuming (documents needing to be photocopied etc.) In the midst of the photocopying frenzy I took notice of all the Pentax leaflets for their different cameras. Today I went to pick up the lens (awesome service btw), the K10D leaflets were all conspicuously absent in a otherwise well stocked promo literature display.

Big changes underfoot methinks.

Just thought you guys might like to know.

My money is going towards glass, flash and accessories. That's the end of the kit I need to round out so that I can handle any situation that comes at me. The K10D does me fine right now.

I agree, the compressed dynamic range of digital camera makes it very tricky work with. If the camera had a D-Lighting type program, that tried to save highlights and eliminate CA, I'd handily pay for an upgrade.

SMC Pentax-A 70-210mm F4

It's not necessarily that a faster lens is better. I like constant aperature lenses because I don't have to recompose my exposure settings as I zoom. That was a deciding factor in my lens choice. The 1:4 Macro is an added bonus as well.

I haven't measured the weight of the lens but it is fairly substanial since it's all metal. That being said it isn't unweildly but it's noticeable. A battery grip would help in balancing it out.

I'll try to get some pictures up tonight.

I bought this lens not too long ago, perhaps I can answer your questions. If you want any pictures from this lens, let me know.

1. This means that the sliding mechanism that is used for zooming the lens has become worn and depending on how bad it is, the lens may shift focal length a little bit on extreme angles or may not even hold the desired focal length. My A 70-210 has a little bit of zoom creep and it hasn't bothered me at all.

2. Yup, mounts perfectly.

3. The crop factor of our cameras is 1.5, (technically 1.53x). Thus the 70-210 becomes a 105-315.

4. Your correct but there's a catch. With the A lens you can control the aperture of the lens from the camera body. Using the aperture ring on the camera is allowed but the lens cannot communicate what aperture you have manually set it to. This can lead to exposure problems. Since your prospective lens is an A lens, my suggestion is to change the aperture from the body.

5. I'll say this, if your considering the DA* 50-135, get it. Out of the trio of tele zooms you have presented it is by far the better one. It is also very expensive at ~900 US. However, if your choice at present lies between the 50-200 and 70-210 it's a toss up. They're both very good in terms of IQ. My A 70-210 has very sharp and I've heard equally good things about 50-200.

There are four main differences that can sway your decision one way or the other.

Focal range - The DA is slightly wider, do you need it?
Auto Focus - One lens is MF one is AF.
Constant Aperture - The DA variable between 4-5.6 where as the A is a constant F4.
Weight - The A series zoom is heavy. The DA is lightweight.

I ended up selecting the A 70-210. Good luck with your choice.

-Rajiv

Edit: To focus with a one touch zoom. You push-pull to change the focal length and twist to focus on your subject.

Zooms vs. Primes

For me, it depends on how much control I have over the situation. The more control I have the more likely it is for me to use a prime. Photoshoot; primes. Events? Zooms.

Weathproofing/Dust seals!

Went to a party tonight and had beer spilled all over me and the camera. The camera will be allright but I have to check in the morning to see if my 50 1.4 is pooched. I don't think the FA lenses are sealed. Right? :(
