Possible Complete K-5 Specs (Still rumour until the 22nd!)

Wow. The K-5 looks super-sweet, but that price puts it way out of my range. But, I'll be happy to look at the falling prices of used K-7's as the addicts jump ship. I'll finally be able to upgrade my K-10D!

Does anyone know how long before a sample lands in someone's hands? Nothing on DPReview yet.

Heard anything about Tamron 10-24/3,5-4,5 ?

As in this thread about the DPreview of the Tamron 10-24mm, most people thought it was a dog, but when I read it it seemed like the conclusion was pretty positive, saying this in the review of the Sigma 10-20:
Compared to the Tamron SP AF 10-24mm F3.5-4.5 Di-II, the Sigma is perhaps starting to show its age; the Tamron is significantly sharper across most of the frame at wideangle, although it has serious problems wide open, and the extreme corners tend to be rather soft. Towards the long end, though, the Sigma edges ahead; but it's probably fair to say that wideangle zooms aren't particularly bought to be used in this range, which is shared with the typical kit zoom. The Sigma also shows notable control of lateral chromatic aberration, but against that the Tamron has significantly lower distortion and falloff. This makes the choice between the two less than entirely clear-cut, however the Tamron probably edges it overall, unless you intend to shoot a lot wide open, or really need the Sigma's HSM focusing.
Am I missing something? It seems to say that the Tamron is better, but most people on this forum love the Sigma 10-20 and bash the Tamron.

What say you, forum friends?

Why Dpreview sucks on the k-7.

I liked the review. I didn't feel it has much bias. Granted, maybe I'm biased, since the K-7 has pretty much everything I wanted in a new Pentax (save for maybe a 1/250 sync speed, but oh well!)

I've also watched some youtube video previews, and they all pretty much liked it too. 720p30f was looked at as being wonderful, as well as the idea of auto focus during video. As for lack of AF points and other "numbers" being lower than Nikon/Canon, I don't care. I'm used to it by now ;-) Also, the "negative" of using SD is fine by me, since I've invested in a bunch of high capacity/high speed SD cards already, so it's a plus for me.

Anyway, some DPreview hating. Their review of the K10D helped me purchase it, and I'm happy I did.

What would we want from the K30D?

There are a few things that would be nice: Faster AF, less noise at higher ISO's (I'm jealous of my Nikon friends on this point!), better LCD... all of that is _nice_, but there is only one thing that will make me sell all my Pentax gear and get a Nikon.

HD Video. Give us some 1080p love and I'll stay a Pentax man for the foreseeable future. If you miss HD Video this year, I'm jumping ship.

Maybe, just maybe, I'll keep my K10D for all the great thrift store scores that will be out there in the near future, but I won't buy anything NEW from Pentax unless it's got 1080p.

End of Line.

I also have one of these lenses. I picked it up for $3 at the local thrift store. This thread is the first hit on Google for it. Anyone?

I also saw this post on the photo.net pentax forums:

Does anyone know anything about that company?

Looking for "Crazy sharp" portrait zoom lens

Wow, Diego! All of your shots posted about are amazing. I see what you mean, too, as I really enjoyed the wider angle portraits alot, and I love the way you "added context" to your wide shots with the background.

I'll think a little more about what I really need and want out of my next lens.

Tamron 28-75mm F2.8 does look like it might be the one I'm after. Pretty much right in the sweet spot for my taste, as well a nice 2.8f all the way down the zoom.

Now, I just have to save up enough money. :-) Oh, and keep my fingers away from a Nikon D90. I mean, who doesn't want to shoot some HD video?

Thanks everybody! Keep it coming!

Hey there everybody!

I've just started taking portraits for friends, family, and co-workers, and I'm running into a lens rut. Please help me out.

I have a Pentax K10D, with
  • The 18-55 kit lens (not very sharp, but all around alright. This shot has the same flash output as the next one)

  • A wonderful 50mm1.4f prime (indeed crazy sharp, but limited. I couldn't back up enough to get the frame I wanted)

  • Cimko MT 28mm 2.8f (thrift store score: manual focus, but nice for wider shots)

  • Albinar ADG 135mm 2.8f (thrift store score: amazing, but too zoomed in for most portraits)

  • Sears 60-300 4.0f (thrift store score: nice, but not all that great for portraits)

I use the 50mm prime for most portraits, as it is my most sharp lens and has amazing bokeh, but every portrait kinda comes out the same, and I also have to back up quite a bit to get people (head and shoulders) in frame. It also isn't all that great for full body portraits, either.

So I'm looking for an amazing zoom lens to take portraits. I've seen some amazing photos from people like David Hobby (the Strobist) who just mentioned this in his blog; "Nikon 24-70 f/2.8 is scary sharp and far and away my favorite lens"

I'm looking for something like that for my Pentax rig. Of course, I'd like to spend less than a grand on it (hopeless?). I do see some nice lens like SMC Pentax-FA* 28-70mm F2.8 AL. Is that the kind of thing I'm gonna need to kick it up a notch? It has about the same range as David's Nikkor lens.

Any suggestions?

I hammered (lightly tapped?) an eye glass screwdriver (non-Phillips, btw).

I love this lens. It's a Sears model #202 - 7368300, in case anyone cares. Wow! For being so cheap at a thrift store, it's a sharp lens with no scratches.

Thanks everyone!

I got three of the four screws out with no problem, but one of them looked a little wonky before I started. That one got stripped and won't budge. I'm not sure what to do.

I may have to get a #0 Torx head driver and see if that will grip it.

Any suggestions?

Hello everybody. I just found this forum, and I'm already in love.

Anyway, I have a question. I just got a few new lens from the local thrift shop, and I need to know a little info about one of them. It's a "Sears" (most likely Ricoh) 60-300mm lens (with macro) for 8 bucks (!), but it seems to have the "Ricoh-Pin" problem.

How does one go about removing the "Ricoh-Pin"? My eye glass screw driver set doesn't seem to want to unscrew the mount. Is there a special tool I need, or should I just apply more pressure? I don't want to wreck the screws, and my tiny driver seems to push itself up when I turn "lefty-loose-y"

Has anyone here ever done the procedure? Is there a good run down of how to do it? I've search these forums, and no joy.

Thanks in advance!

p.s. I also got a Cimko MT 28mm 2.8f, Albinar ADG 135mm 2.8f, each for three bucks!!!! I've always wanted a wide angle lens, and it seems that everyone loves the 135. I couldn't pass it up at those prices! They also had a ton of tele-converters, but I'm not sure about them... the mounts seems strange.
