Tokina RMC 400/5.6 - how to open?

I have the same lens and have adjusted the infinity focus. There are 2 small flat head screws underneath the hood. Just slide it forward. Loosen those screws and hold the main body of the lens with one hand and adjust the focus end with the other until you achieve infinity focus. Tighten. All done. Simple.

Actually I may have only loosened the one screw. But it worked for me. Or if the screws are a bit loose already just go ahead and hold the body while twisting the focus ring one way or the other.

Great shot. Hard to get so close with only a 60mm lens. I've got a Fuji Zeiss Touit 50mm/f2.8 that I'm thinking of dumping. I've been using the Fuji 90mm/F2.0 to get my insect and flower shots lately even though its not macro. But it's rendering is much better than the Zeiss Touit. I've scared many a butterfly away using my 50mm/2.8 macro.

That's almost as many lenses as my wife's shoe collection. How do you choose which shoe...err....lens to go out with that day

My latest lens acquisition is the Pentax A 400mm/5.6. So now that makes 7 total. I'm going to give away my Tokina 400mm/5.6 to my brother so that will leave me with 6. More than what I need.

Fuji X-H1 and the Pentax A 400mm/5.6 $37 dollar Oriole feeder and 2 days later. Bam! My first Oriole! This lens is sharp if you can focus on the birds eyes. Even at F11 the focal plane seems to be thin with this lens. I'm still contemplating the Fuji 70-300mm at $799 but for $250 this lens has done a fine job.

Wow that is sharp and renders beautifully. I could use this over the Fuji 35mm1.4 anyday.

I wonder how that compares with Pentax's A 400mm/5.6 other than the Pentax being of manual persuasion.

Now I'm not so sure. Both the Pentax A 400mm/5.6 and the Tokina 100-300/F4 both look similarly sharp when focused properly.

Do you have a paid flickr account and would you recommend it?

---------- Post added 05-16-21 at 06:37 PM ----------

Fuji X-H1 with Tokina 100-300/F4.....@300mm. This lens I believe is a bit smoother and maybe a tad sharper than the Pentax A 400mm/5.6 and obviously allows you to zoom from 100-300. Nice for Train shots and sharp for bird shots as long as you don't need farther than 300mm.

All in all not bad for $87 dollars purchased from Roberts Cameras. Makes me hold off on getting the new Fuji 70-300mm @$799.

On the Fuji forums many are using a teleconverter and the Canon 100-400 Mark II lens. It renders better than Fuji's 100-400mm. Just a thought.....

I have the Tokina SL 400mm/5.6 Manual lens along with the Pentax A 400mm/5.6. You are correct. The Pentax is better but the Tokina is no slouch and is much smaller and lighter weight if that's an issue. $40 dollars for the Tokina and $250 for the Pentax A 400mm/5.6 if you can find one.

Lens regrets?

I couldn't sell my FA 100 Macro so I gave it to my brother. It's his favorite lens.

---------- Post added 03-31-21 at 12:25 PM ----------

I sort of regret selling my Pentax F*300 although it did fund my new camera acquisition. Buy my most regrettable lens I ever sold was the awesome Tokina SD 100-300mm F4. It was sharp and just a joy to use. But several years later I was able to stumble upon a very nice copy from Roberts Camera and pounced on it for only $87 dollars! I'm not going to make that mistake again. This one will stay with me for a very long time.

Check this Tokina out at 300mm.....

I just purchased two very nice 400mm/F5.6 Primes. A Tokina SL 400mm/5.6 and a Pentax A 400mm/5.6. So far I like the Pentax lens better as it has much more focus travel than the Tokina, is sharper and has more contrast.

On a different note; now that I've seen users post photo's from Fuji's new 70-300mm lens, I've had a chance to compare them to my Tokina AT-X SD 100-300mm F4 lens and honestly I think the Tokina does a better job. Of course no autofocus but a savings of nearly $700 dollars nonetheless.

Yes thank you for your reply. I'm shooting between F8 and F11 with shutter speeds of at least 500 to 1000 using my Pentax A 400mm/5.6 I am more than satisfied with the results given. And having paid $260 for this lens I don't think it to be worth my time to invest well over $1,500 for an FA*400mm when I could just as easily purchase the Fuji 100-400mm AF lens for less. I think I maxed out my "bang for the buck" as it were with the Pentax A 400mm/5.6.

I think the use of the Fuji X-H1 and the Pentax A 400mm/5.6 really makes for a great combination. Again thanks for your input.
